| 1 O rei Cananeu Arad, que habitava ao meio-dia, tendo ouvido que Israel viera pelo caminho dos exploradores, pelejou contra ele, e, ficando vencedor, levou dele despojos. | 1 And when king Arad the Chanaanite, who dwelt towards the south, had heard this, to wit, that Israel was come by the way of the spies, he fought against them, and overcoming them carried off their spoils. |
| 2 Então Israel fez voto ao Senhor, e disse: Se tu entregares nas minhas mãos este povo, eu arruinarei as suas cidades. | 2 But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, said: It thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities. |
| 3 O Senhor ouviu os rogos de Israel e entregou-lhe os Cananeus, que ele matou, destruídas as suas cidades, pondo àquele lugar o nome de Horma, isto é, Anátema. | 3 And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and delivered up the Chanaanite, and they cut them off and destroyed their cities: and they called the name of that place Horma, that is to say, Anathema. |
| 4 Partiram do monte Hor pela estrada que conduz ao mar Vermelho, para rodearem o pais de Edom. O povo começou a enfastiar-se do caminho e das fadigas, | 4 And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour: |
| 5 e, falando contra Deus e contra Moisés, disse: Por que nos tiraste do Egito, para morrermos num deserto? Falta pão, não há água: a nossa alma está enfastiada deste alimento levíssimo. | 5 And speaking against God end Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food. |
| 6 Por esta causa o Senhor enviou contra o povo serpentes ardentes, que feriram e mataram muitos. | 6 Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them. |
| 7 (Os Israelitas) foram ter com Moisés e disseram-lhe: Nós pecamos porque falamos contra o Senhor e contra ti: roga-lhe que afaste de nós as serpentes. Moisés orou pelo povo, | 7 Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. |
| 8 e o Senhor disse-lhe: Faze uma serpente de bronze, e põe-na por sinal: aquele que, sendo ferido, olhar para ela, viverá. | 8 And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live. |
| 9 Moisés fez, pois, uma serpente de bronze, e pô-la por sinal: os feridos que olhavam para ela, saravam. | 9 Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed. |
| 10 Os filhos de Israel, depois que partiram, foram acampar em Oboth. | 10 And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth. |
| 11 Tendo saído de lá, armaram as suas tendas em Jeabarim no deserto, que olha para Moab, ao oriente. | 11 And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east. |
| 12 Partindo deste lugar, foram à torrente de Zared: | 12 And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared: |
| 13 deixada a qual, foram acampar defronte do rio Arnon, que corre no deserto, saindo dos territórios dos Amorreus, porque o Arnon é o limite de Moab, que separa os Moabitas dos Amorreus. | 13 Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites. |
| 14 Por isso se diz no livro das guerras do Senhor Assim como fez no mar Vermelho, assim fará nas torrentes do Arnon. | 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Amen. |
| 15 Os rochedos das torrentes se inclinaram, para descansarem em Ar, e repousarem sobre os confins dos Moabitas. | 15 The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites. |
| 16 Partindo de lá, apareceu o poço, sobre o qual o Senhor tinha dito a Moisés: Junta o povo, e eu lhe darei água. | 16 When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water. |
| 17 Então cantou Israel este cântico: Suba o poço. Cantavam: | 17 Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto: |
| 18 O poço, que os príncipes cavaram, e que os chefes do povo prepararam, por ordem do dador da lei, e com os seus bastões. Do deserto (foram) a Matana: | 18 The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana. |
| 19 de Matana a Naaliei; de Naaliel a Bamoth; | 19 From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth. |
| 20 de Bamoth a um vale que está no país de Moab, no cimo de Fasga, o qual olha para o deserto. | 20 From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert. |
| 21 Então Israel mandou embaixadores a Seon, rei dos Amorreus, para lhe dizer: | 21 And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying: |
| 22 Suplico-te que me deixes passar pelo teu país; não declinaremos nem para os campos, nem para as vinhas, não beberemos água dos poços; iremos pela estrada real, até passarmos os teus limites. | 22 I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king's highway, till we be past thy borders. |
| 23 Ele, porém, não quis permitir que Israel passasse pelos seus territórias; antes, tendo juntado um exército, saiu-lhe ao encontro no deserto, foi a Jasa, e combateu contra ele. | 23 And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa, and fought against them. |
| 24 Contudo foi derrotado à ponta de espada por Israel, que conquistou o seu pais, desde o Arnon até Jeboc, e até aos filhos de Amon: porque as fronteiras dos Amonitas estavam defendidas por fortes guarnições. | 24 And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison. |
| 25 Tomou Israel todas as suas cidades, habitou nas cidades dos Amorreus, isto é, em Hesebon, e nas suas aldeias. | 25 So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof. |
| 26 A cidade de Hesebon pertencia a Seon, rei dos Amorreus, que tinha feito guerra ao rei de Moab, e lhe tinha tomado toda a terra que estava no seu poder até ao Arnon. | 26 Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominions, as far as the Arnon. |
| 27 Por isso se diz como provérbio: Vinde a Hesebon! Edifique-se, e levante-se a cidade de Seon! | 27 Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up: |
| 28 Um fogo saiu de Hesebon, uma chama da cidade de Seon, e devorou Ar dos Moabitas, e os habitantes das alturas do Arnon. | 28 A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon. |
| 29 Ai de ti, Moab! Pereceste, povo de Camos! Ele deixou que fossem fugitivos seus filhos, e entregou cativas as suas filhas a Seon, rei dos Amorreus. | 29 Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites. |
| 30 O seu jugo foi desfeito, desde Hesebon até Dibon. Chegaram cansados a Nofe e até Medaba. | 30 Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba. |
| 31 Israel habitou no país do Amorreu. | 31 So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite. |
| 32 Moisés enviou (homens) a explorar Jazer, e (os Israelitas) tomaram as suas aldeias, e prenderam os seus habitantes, | 32 And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants. |
| 33 Depois voltaram, e subiram pelo caminho de Basan, e saiu-lhes ao encontro Og, rei de Basan, com todo o seu povo, para lhes dar batalha em Edrai. | 33 And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai. |
| 34 O Senhor disse a Moisés: Não tenhas medo dele, por que em tua mão o entrego a ele, a todo o seu povo, a todo o seu pais; farás a ele como fizeste a Seon, rei dos Amorreus, que habitava em Hesebon. | 34 And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon. |
| 35 (Os Israelitas) feriram, pois, também a este com seus filhos e todo o seu povo até ao extermínio, e conquistaram o seu país. | 35 So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land. |
