| 1 Os filhos de Israel, toda a multidão, chegaram ao deserto de Sin, no primeiro mês. O povo ficou em Cades. Ali faleceu Maria, e foi sepultada no mesmo lugar. | 1 The Israelites, the whole community, arrived in the first month at the desert of Zin. The people settledat Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. |
| 2 Como o povo necessitasse de água, juntaram-se contra Moisés e Aarão, | 2 There was no water for the community, so they banded together against Moses and Aaron. |
| 3 e, levantando-se em motim, disseram: Oxalá nós tivéssemos perecido entre os nossos irmãos diante do Senhor. | 3 The people laid the blame on Moses. 'We would rather have died', they said, 'as our brothers diedbefore Yahweh! |
| 4 Por que conduzistes a assembleia do Senhor ao deserto, para morrermos nós e os nossos animais? | 4 Why have you brought Yahweh's community into this desert, for us and our livestock to die here? |
| 5 Por que nos fizestes partir do Egito, e nos conduzistes a este péssimo lugar, que não se pode semear, e que não produz nem figueiras, nem vinhas, nem romãzeiras, e além disto não tem água para beber? | 5 Why did you lead us out of Egypt, only to bring us to this wretched place? It is a place unfit forsowing, it has no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, and there is not even water to drink!' |
| 6 Moisés e Aarão, deixada a multidão, entraram no tabernáculo da reunião e prostraram-se com o rosto por terra. E apareceu sobre eles a glória do Senhor. | 6 Leaving the assembly, Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They threwthemselves on their faces, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them. |
| 7 O Senhor falou a Moisés, dizendo; | 7 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said, |
| 8 Toma a vara, junta o povo, tu e Aarão, teu irmão, falai ao rochedo diante deles, e ele dará águas. Farás sair água do rochedo, e beberá toda a multidão e os seus animais. | 8 'Take the branch and call the community together, you and your brother Aaron. Then, in full view ofthem, order this rock to release its water. You wil release water from the rock for them and provide drink for thecommunity and their livestock.' |
| 9 Tomou Moisés a vara que estava diante do Senhor, conforme lhe tinha ordenado, | 9 Moses took up the branch from before Yahweh, as he had directed him. |
| 10 e, tendo reunido a multidão diante deste rochedo, disse-lhes: Ouvi, rebeldes e incrédulos: Acaso poderemos nós fazer sair água deste rochedo para vós? | 10 Moses and Aaron then cal ed the assembly together in front of the rock. He then said to them,'Listen now, you rebels. Shall we make water gush from this rock for you?' |
| 11 Moisés tendo levantado a mão, ferindo duas vezes com a vara o rochedo, saíram dele águas copiosíssimas, de sorte que bebeu o povo e os animais. | 11 Moses then raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the branch; water gushed out inabundance, and the community and their livestock drank. |
| 12 O Senhor disse a Moisés e a Aarão: Porque vós não me crestes para me santificardes diante dos filhos de Israel, não introduzireis estes povos na terra que eu lhes darei | 12 Yahweh then said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe that I could assert my holinessbefore the Israelites' eyes, you wil not lead this assembly into the country which I am giving them.' |
| 13 Esta é a água da contradição, onde os filhos de Israel altercaram contra o Senhor, e onde (o Senhor) foi santificado entre eles. | 13 These were the Waters of Meribah, where the Israelites laid the blame on Yahweh and where, bytheir means, he asserted his holiness. |
| 14 Entretanto Moisés enviou de Cades embaixadores que lhe dissessem: Isto te manda dizer teu irmão Israel: Sabes todos os trabalhos que temos passado, | 14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh: 'To the king of Edom. Your brother Israel says this: You areaware of the great hardships we have encountered. |
| 15 como os nossos pais desceram ao Egito, como ai habitamos muito tempo, como os Egípcios nos maltrataram a nós e a nossos pais, | 15 Our ancestors went down to Egypt and there we stayed for a long time. But the Egyptians treated usbadly, as they had our ancestors. |
| 16 como clamamos ao Senhor, e ele nos ouviu, e enviou um anjo, que nos tirou do Egito. Agora, encontrando-nos na cidade de Cades, que está no extremo das tuas fronteiras, | 16 When we appealed to Yahweh, he heard our cry and, sending an angel, brought us out of Egypt,and here we are, now, at Kadesh, a town on the borders of your territory. |
| 17 suplicamos-te que nos deixes passar pelo teu país. Não iremos pelos campos nem pelas vinhas, nem beberemos das águas dos teus poços, mas iremos pela estrada pública, sem nos afastarmos nem para a direita nem para a esquerda, até que passemos as tuas fronteiras. | 17 We ask permission to pass through your country. We shall not go through the fields or vineyards; weshall not drink the water from the wel s; we shal keep to the king's highway without turning to right or left until wehave passed through your territory.' |
| 18 Edom respondeu-lhe: Não passarás pelo meu país, de outra sorte sairei armado contra ti. | 18 To which, Edom replied, 'You wil not pass through my country; if you do, I shal oppose you by forceof arms.' |
| 19 Os filhos de Israel disseram-lhe: Nós iremos pelo caminho ordinário: se bebermos das tuas águas, nós e os nossos gados, pagaremos o que for justo: não haverá dificuldade alguma no preço, permite sòmente que passemos de corrida. | 19 To which the Israelites replied, 'We shal keep to the high road; if I and my flocks drink any of yourwater, I am wil ing to pay for it. Al I am asking is to pass through on foot.' |
| 20 Porém ele respondeu: Não passarás. E Edom marchou logo ao encontro dele com uma infinita multidão, e com mão forte. | 20 Edom replied: 'You shal not pass,' and Edom opposed them in great numbers and great force. |
| 21 Não quis condescender com o pedido de dar passagem pelo seu país; por isso Israel desviou-se dele. | 21 At Edom's refusal to grant Israel passage through his territory, Israel turned away. |
| 22 Tendo levantado os acampamentos de Cades, foram ao monte Hor, que está nos confins da terra de Edom, | 22 They set out from Kadesh, and the Israelites, the whole community, came to Mount Hor. |
| 23 Onde o Senhor falou a Moisés e Aarão, | 23 Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the frontier of Edom, and said, |
| 24 dizendo: Aarão vai juntar-se ao seu povo, porque ele não entrará na terra que eu dei aos filhos de Israel, visto que foi incrédulo às minhas palavras nas águas da Contradição. | 24 'Aaron is to be gathered to his people; he will not enter the country which I have given to theIsraelites, since you both disobeyed my order at the Waters of Meribah. |
| 25 Toma Aarão e seu filho com ele, e leva-os ao monte Hor. | 25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up Mount Hor. |
| 26 Depois de teres despido o pai das suas vestes, revestirás com elas Eleázaro, seu filho: Aarão será reunido (a seus pais), e ai morrerá. | 26 Then take Aaron's robes off him and dress his son Eleazar in them. Aaron wil then be gathered tohis people; that is where he will die.' |
| 27 Moisés fez como o Senhor lhe mandara, e subiram ao monte Hor, à vista de toda a multidão. | 27 Moses did as Yahweh ordered. With the whole community watching, they went up Mount Hor. |
| 28 Depois que despojou Aarão das suas vestes revestiu com elas a Eleázaro, seu filho. | 28 Moses took Aaron's robes off him and dressed his son Eleazar in them, and there Aaron died, onthe mountain-top. Moses and Eleazar then came back down the mountain. |
| 29 Morto Aarão no cimo do monte, desceu (Moisés) com Eleázaro. | 29 The whole community saw that Aaron had died, and for thirty days the whole House of Israelmourned for Aaron. |
| 30 Toda a multidão, viu que Aarão tinha morrido e choraram por ele todas as famílias de Israel, durante trinta dias. | |
