| 1 No ano terceiro do reinado de Joaquim, rei de Judá, veio Nabucodonosor rei de Babilônia, contra Jerusalém, e sitiou-a. | 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched onJerusalem and besieged it. |
| 2 O Senhor entregou nas suas mãos Joaquim, rei de Judá e uma parte dos objectos da casa de Deus. Ele levou-os para a terra de Senaar, para a casa do seu deus; pôs os objetos na casa do tesouro do seu deus. | 2 The Lord let Jehoiakim king of Judah fal into his power, as well as some of the vessels belonging to theTemple of God. These he took away to Shinar, putting the vessels into the treasury of his own gods. |
| 3 Então disse o rei a Asfenez, seu eunuco-mor, que Ihe destinasse, dentre os filhos de Israel, da linhagem dos reis e dos nobres, | 3 From the Israelites, the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring a certain number of boys ofroyal or noble descent; |
| 4 alguns meninos em que não houvesse defeito algum, de gentil presença, hábeis para toda a sabedoria, versados nas ciências e inteligentes, que pudessem estar no palácio do rei, para que lhes fossem ensinadas as letras e a língua dos Caldeus | 4 they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, versed in every branch of wisdom,wel -informed, discerning, suitable for service at the royal court. Ashpenaz was to teach them to speak and writethe language of the Chaldaeans. |
| 5 O rei ordenou que se lhes desse cada dia de comer das Iguarias reais, e de beber do vinho que ele mesmo bebia, a fim de que, mantidos deste modo durante três anos, servissem depois na presença do rei. | 5 The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from the royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they would enter the royal service. |
| 6 Entre estes encontraram-se dos filhos de Judá, Daniel, Ananias, Misael e Azarias. | 6 Among them were the Judaeans Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. |
| 7 O eunuco-mor pôs-lhes os seguintes nomes: a Daniel o de Baltasar, a Ananias o de Sidrac, a Misael o de Misac, e a Azarias o de Abdenago. | 7 The chief eunuch gave them other names, cal ing Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, MishaelMeshach, and Azariah Abed-Nego. |
| 8 Daniel resolveu no seu coração não se contaminar com as iguarias que lhe viessem da mesa do rei, nem com o vinho que ele bebesse, e pediu ao eumuco-mor que não o obrigasse a contaminar-se. | 8 Daniel, who was determined not to incur pol ution by food and wine from the royal table, begged thechief eunuch to spare him this defilement. |
| 9 Deus fez que Daniel achasse graça e benevolência diante do eunuco-mor. | 9 God al owed Daniel to receive faithful love and sympathy from the chief eunuch. |
| 10 Então o eunuco-mor disse a Daniel: Tenho medo do rei, meu amo, o qual determinou o que vós deveis comer e beber; se ele vir os vossos rostos mais macilentos que os dos outros jovens da vossa idade, sereis a causa de que o rei me condene. | 10 But the eunuch warned Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink,and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head wil be in danger with theking because of you.' |
| 11 Daniel respondeu ao oficial, a quem o eunuco-mor tinha ordenado que tivesse cuidado de Daniel, de Ananias, de Misael e de Azarias; | 11 To the guard assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah by the chief eunuch, Daniel thensaid, |
| 12 Peço-te que nos experimentes a nós, teus servos, durante dez dias, dando-nos só legumes a comer e água a beber; | 12 'Please al ow your servants a ten days' trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat andwater to drink. |
| 13 depois disto, olha para os nossos rostos e para os rostos dos meninos que comem da mesa do rei, e, conforme vires, assim procederás com os teus servos. | 13 You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king's food; go by what you see,and treat your servants accordingly.' |
| 14 Ele acedeu ao seu pedido e experimentou-os durante dez dias. | 14 The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days' trial. |
| 15 Depois dos dez dias apareceram os seus rostos melhores e mais gordos do que os de todos os meninos que comiam da mesa do rei. | 15 When the ten days were over, they looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten theiral owance from the royal table; |
| 16 O oficial pois, levava embora os manjares e o vinho que deviam beber, e dava-lhes legumes. | 16 so the guard withdrew their al owance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave themvegetables. |
| 17 Deus concedeu a estes jovens saber e compreensão no campo das letras e da sabedoria, e a Daniel (deu) a inteligência de todas as visões e sonhos. | 17 To these four boys God gave knowledge and skil in every aspect of literature and learning; Danielalso had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream. |
| 18 Terminando pois, o tempo, depois do qual o rei tinha ordenado que lhe fossem apresentados, o eunuco-mor introduziu-os à presença de Nabucodonosor. | 18 When the time stipulated by the king for the boys to be presented to him came round, the chiefeunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. |
| 19 Tendo-se o rei entretido em conversação com eles, não encontrou entre todos quem igualasse Daniel, Ananias, Misael e Azarias. Ficaram, portanto, ao serviço da pessoa real. | 19 The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah. So they became members of the king's court, |
| 20 Em todas as questões que o rei lhes propôs em matéria de sabedoria e de inteligência, achou que excediam dez vezes todos os adivinhos e magos de todo o seu reino. | 20 and on whatever point of wisdom or understanding he might question them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians and soothsayers in his entire kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year ofKing Cyrus. |
