| 7 por este motivo eis que o Senhor fará vir sobre ele as águas impetuosas e abundantes do rio (Eufrates), o rei dos Assírios com todo o seu poder; subirá sobre todas as suas ribeiras, correrá por cima de todas as suas margens, | 7 now, against it, the Lord will bring the mighty, swel ing waters of the River (the king of Assyria and al hisglory); the River wil flood up all its channels and overflow al its banks; |
| 8 espraiar-se-á por Judá e, inundando-a e submergindo-a chegar-lhe-á até ao pescoço. A extensão das suas asas encherá todo o espaço da tua terra, ó Emanuel. | 8 it wil flow into Judah, flooding everything and passing on; it will reach right up to the neck, and the spreading of its wings wil cover the whole extent of your country, Immanuel! |
| 9 Ajuntai-vos, povos, (para a guerra) e sereis vencidos! Vós, todas as terras de longe, ouvi, reuni as vossas forças, e sereis vencidas; tomai as vossas armas, e sereis vencidas; | 9 Realise this, peoples, and be afraid, listen, all members of far-off nations! Arm yourselves yet be afraid!Arm yourselves yet be afraid! |
| 10 formai planos, e eles sairão frustrados; proferi alguma palavra de mando, e ela não será executada, porque Deus é connosco! | 10 Devise plans as you may: they will come to nothing! Make what pronouncements you like; it wil notcome about! For God is with us!' |

| 12 Não chameis conspiração o que este povo chama conspiração: não temais o que ele teme, nem vos assusteis. | 12 'Do not call conspiracy al that this people calls conspiracy; do not dread what they dread, have no fearof that. |
| 13 Proclamai santo o Senhor dos exércitos; seja ele (só) o vosso temor e o vosso terror. | 13 Yahweh Sabaoth is the one you wil proclaim holy, him you wil dread, him you wil fear. |

| 19 Quando vos disserem: Consultai os evocadores dos mortos e os adivinhos, que murmuram e segredam: Porventura o povo não há-de consultar os seus deuses? consultar os mortos acerca dos vivos? | 19 And should people say to you, 'Go and consult ghosts and wizards that whisper and mutter' -- a peopleshould certainly consult its gods and the dead on behalf of the living! |
| 20 Antes à lei e ao testemunho (é que se deve recorrer). Porém, se eles não falarem segundo esta linguagem, não ralará para eles a luz da manhã. | 20 As regards instruction and testimony, without doubt this is how they wil talk, and hence there wil be nodawn for them. |
| 21 Andarão errantes, oprimidos pela miséria e pela fome, e quando padecerem esta fome, se agastarão e amaldiçoarão o seu rei e o seu Deus; levantarão os olhos para o alto, | 21 Oppressed and starving he wil wander the country; and, once starving, he wil become frenzied andcurse his king and his God; turning his gaze upward, |
| 22 depois olharão para a terra, e eis que tudo será tribulação e trevas, abatimento e angústia, escuridão sem raio de luz. Sim, mas (um dia) não haverá mais trevas para a terra que esteve na angústia e não poderão escapar do aperto em que se encontram. | 22 then down to earth, there wil be only anguish, gloom, the confusion of night, swirling darkness. |
| 23 For is not everything dark as night for a country in distress? As the past humbled the land of Zebulunand the land of Naphtali, so the future will glorify the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, the territory of thenations. |
