| 1 (A sabedoria) estende-se poderosa desde uma extremidade à outra, e dispõe todas as coisas com suavidade. | 1 Wisdom reacheth from one end to another mightily: and sweetly doth she order all things. |
| 2 Eu a amei e busquei desde a minha juventude, procurei tomá-la como esposa, e fiquei enamorado da sua formosura, | 2 I loved her, and sought her out from my youth, I desired to make her my spouse, and I was a lover of her beauty. |
| 3 Ela mostra a nobreza da sua origem (nisto) em conviver com Deus e no amor que lhe tem o Senhor de todas as coisas. | 3 In that she is conversant with God, she magnifieth her nobility: yea, the Lord of all things himself loved her. |
| 4 Porque ela é conhecedora da ciência de Deus, e é ela que escolhe as suas obras (as obras a realizar por Deus). | 4 For she is privy to the mysteries of the knowledge of God, and a lover of his works. |
| 5 Se as riquezas se apetecem na vida, que coisa há mais rica que a sabedoria, que faz todas as coisas? | 5 If riches be a possession to be desired in this life; what is richer than wisdom, that worketh all things? |
| 6 Se é a inteligência que opera, quem, melhor que a sabedoria, é artífice de todos os seres? | 6 And if prudence work; who of all that are is a more cunning workman than she? |
| 7 Se alguém ama a justiça, os frutos do seu esforço são virtudes. Ela ensina a temperança e a prudência, a justiça e a fortaleza, que é o mais útil que há na vida para os homens. | 7 And if a man love righteousness her labours are virtues: for she teacheth temperance and prudence, justice and fortitude: which are such things, as en can have nothing more profitable in their life. |
| 8 Se alguém deseja uma vasta ciência, ela é que sabe o passado e que julga do futuro; penetra as subtilezas dos discursos e as soluções dos enigmas; conhece os sinais e os prodígios, antes que eles apareçam, e o que tem de acontecer no decurso dos tempos e épocas. | 8 If a man desire much experience, she knoweth things of old, and conjectureth aright what is to come: she knoweth the subtilties of speeches, and can expound dark sentences: she foreseeth signs and wonders, and the events of seasons and times. |
| 9 Eu, pois, resolvi-me a tomá-la comigo por companheira da minha vida, sabendo que ela será para mim uma conselheira de todo o bem, e meu conforto nos cuidados e penas. | 9 Therefore I purposed to take her to me to live with me, knowing that she would be a counsellor of good things, and a comfort in cares and grief. |
| 10 Graças a ela, terei glória entre os povos, e, posto que jovem, (terei) honra entre os velhos; | 10 For her sake I shall have estimation among the multitude, and honour with the elders, though I be young. |
| 11 reconhecer-se-á a minha penetração nos julgamentos, e aparecerei admirável na presença dos poderosos. | 11 I shall be found of a quick conceit in judgment, and shall be admired in the sight of great men. |
| 12 Quando eu estiver calado, esperarão que fale; quando falar, olharão para mim com atenção; e, quando me alargar nos discursos, porão a mão sobre a boca. | 12 When I hold my tongue, they shall bide my leisure, and when I speak, they shall give good ear unto me: if I talk much, they shall lay their hands upon their mouth. |
| 13 Por ela terei a imortalidade, e deixarei memória eterna aos vindouros. | 13 Moreover by the means of her I shall obtain immortality, and leave behind me an everlasting memorial to them that come after me. |
| 14 Governarei os povos, e as nações me serão sujeitas. | 14 I shall set the people in order, and the nations shall be subject unto me. |
| 15 Os reis ferozes temerão, quando ouvirem falar de mim; com o povo me mostrei benigno, e, na guerra, forte. | 15 Horrible tyrants shall be afraid, when they do but hear of me; I shall be found good among the multitude, and valiant in war. |
| 16 Entrando em minha casa, encontrarei nela o meu descanso, porque o contacto com ela não tem nada de desagradável, nem a sua companhia nada de fastidioso, mas tudo é satisfação e alegria. | 16 After I am come into mine house, I will repose myself with her: for her conversation hath no bitterness; and to live with her hath no sorrow, but mirth and joy. |
| 17 Meditando nestas coisas comigo mesmo, e considerando, dentro no meu coração, que a imortalidade (feliz) se acha na união com a sabedoria, | 17 Now when I considered these things in myself, and pondered them in my heart, how that to be allied unto wisdom is immortality; |
| 18 e que na sua amizade há um perfeito prazer, e nas obras das suas mãos riquezas inexauríveis, que no assíduo comércio com ela se adquire a prudência, e uma grande glória na participação das suas palavras, eu procurava-a por todos os lados para a tomar por minha companhia. | 18 And great pleasure it is to have her friendship; and in the works of her hands are infinite riches; and in the exercise of conference with her, prudence; and in talking with her, a good report; I went about seeking how to take her to me. |
| 19 Eu era um menino de bom natural, e coube-me por sorte uma boa alma. | 19 For I was a witty child, and had a good spirit. |
| 20 Ou antes, como era bom, entrei num corpo incontaminado. | 20 Yea rather, being good, I came into a body undefiled. |
| 21 Como sabia que não podia obter a sabedoria, se Deus ma não desse, — e era já prudência o saber de quem vinha este dom — dirigi-me ao Senhor, fiz-lhe a minha súplica, disse-lhe de todo o meu coração; | 21 Nevertheless, when I perceived that I could not otherwise obtain her, except God gave her me; and that was a point of wisdom also to know whose gift she was; I prayed unto the Lord, and besought him, and with my whole heart I said, |
