| 1 Então o justo se levantará com grande afouteza, em presença daqueles que o atribularam, e que desprezaram os seus trabalhos. | 1 Then shall the just stand with great constancy against those that have afflicted them, and taken away their labours. |
| 2 Ao verem-no, os maus perturbar-se-ão com temor horrível, e ficarão assombrados com a repentina salvação do justo, a qual eles não esperavam. | 2 These seeing it, shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the suddenness of their unexpected salvation. |
| 3 Dirão dentro de si, tocados de (inútil) arrependimento, gemendo com angústia do espírito: Este é aquele de quem nós noutro tempo fazíamos zombaria, e a quem tínhamos por objecto de opróbrio. | 3 Saying within themselves, repenting, and groaning for anguish of spirit: These are they, whom we had some time in derision, and for a parable of reproach. |
| 4 Nós, insensatos, considerávamos a sua vida uma loucura, e a sua morte uma ignomínia. | 4 We fools esteemed their life madness, and their end without honour. |
| 5 Como é contado entre os filhos de Deus, e entre os santos está a sua sorte? | 5 Behold how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the saints. |
| 6 Logo nós nos extraviámos do caminho da verdade; a luz da justiça não raiou para nós, e o sol não nasceu para nós. | 6 Therefore we have erred from the way of truth, and the light of justice hath not shined unto us, and the sun of understanding hath not risen upon us. |
| 7 Cansámo-nos nas sendas da iniquidade e da perdição, andámos por desertos sem caminhos, ignorámos a via do Senhor. | 7 We wearied ourselves in the way of iniquity and destruction, and have walked through hard ways, but the way of the Lord we have not known. |
| 8 De que nos aproveitou a soberba? De que nos serviu a riqueza com a jactância? | 8 What hath pride profited us? or what advantage hath the boasting of riches brought us? |
| 9 Todas estas coisas passaram como sombra, como uma notícia que corre veloz, | 9 All those things are passed away like a shadow, and like a post that runneth on, |
| 10 como nau que vai cortando as ondas agitadas, da qual se não pode achar rasto depois que passou, nem a esteira da sua quilha nas ondas; | 10 And as a ship that passeth through the waves: whereof when it is gone by, the trace cannot be found, nor the path of its keel in the waters: |
| 11 ou como ave que voa, atravessando pelo ar, de cujo caminho se não acha indicio algum pois, batendo com as penas o ar subtil, fende-o com a força do seu impulso, abrindo caminho com o mover das suas asas, sem deixar sinal algum da sua passagem; | 11 Or as when a bird flieth through the air, of the passage of which no mark can be found, but only the sound of the wings beating the light air, and parting it by the force of her flight; she moved her wings, and hath flown through, and there is no mark found afterwards of her way: |
| 12 ou como seta despedida contra o alvo, que embora fenda o ar, (é de forma que) ele logo se une, de maneira que se ignora por onde ela passou. | 12 Or as when an arrow is shot at a mark, the divided air presently cometh together again, so that the passage thereof is not known: |
| 13 Assim também nós, apenas nascidos, deixámos de ser e nenhum traço de virtude podemos mostrar: fomos consumidos na nossa malícia. | 13 So we also being born, forthwith ceased to be: and have been able to shew no mark of virtue: but are consumed in our wickedness. |
| 14 Eis o que os pecadores dirão na morada dos mortos. | 14 Such things as these the sinners said in hell: |
| 15 Com efeito a esperança do ímpio é como a poeira levada pelo vento, como a espuma ténue, espalhada pela tempestade, como o fumo, dissipado pela aragem, e como a lembrança do hóspede dum dia que passa. | 15 For the hope of the wicked is as dust, which is blown away with the wind, and as a thin froth which is dispersed by the storm: and a smoke that is scattered abroad by the wind: and as the remembrance of a guest of one day that passeth by. |
| 16 Os justos, pelo contrário, viverão para sempre; a sua recompensa está no Senhor, e o Altíssimo tem cuidado deles. | 16 But the just shall live for evermore: and their reward is with the Lord, and the care of them with the most High. |
| 17 Por isso receberão do Senhor um magnífico reino e um diadema brilhante. Protegê-los-á com a sua dextra, e com o seu braço os defenderá. | 17 Therefore shall they receive a kingdom of glory, and a crown of beauty at the hand of the Lord: for with his right hand he will cover them, and with his holy arm he will defend them. |
| 18 Tomará o seu zelo como armadura, e armará (também) as criaturas para se vingar dos seus inimigos, | 18 And his zeal will take armour, and he will arm the creature for the revenge of his enemies. |
| 19 Tomará por couraça a justiça, e por capacete o juízo sincero. | 19 He will put on justice as a breastplate, and will take true judgment instead of a helmet. |
| 20 Tomará a santidade como escudo impenetrável, | 20 He will take equity for an invincible shield: |
| 21 afiará a sua ira inflexível, como uma lança, e todo o universo combaterá com ele contra os insensatos. | 21 And he will sharpen his severe wrath for a spear, and the whole world shall fight with him against the unwise. |
| 22 Partirão bem lançados os dardos dos raios, os quais serão desferidos das nuvens como dum arco bem encurvado, e descarregarão sobre o alvo marcado; | 22 Then shafts of lightning shall go directly from the clouds, as from a bow well bent, they shall be shot out, and shall fly to the mark. |
| 23 da ira de Deus, como duma balista, será arremessada uma grossa saraiva; embravecer-se-á contra eles a água do mar, e os rios os arrastarão com fúria. | 23 And thick hail shall be cast upon them from the stone casting wrath: the water of the sea shall rage against them, and the rivers shall run together in a terrible manner. |
| 24 O sopro da Omnipotência se levantará contra eles, e como um redemoinho os espalhará; assim a iniquidade reduzirá a um deserto toda a terra, e a malícia deitará abaixo os tronos dos poderosos. | 24 A mighty wind shall stand up against them, and as a whirlwind shall divide them: and their iniquity shall bring all the earth to a desert, and wickedness shall overthrow the thrones of the mighty. |
