| 1 Amai a justiça, vós os que governais a terra. Que os vossos pensamentos sobre o Senhor sejam bons, e buscai-o com simplicidade de coração, | 1 Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth, think of the Lord with uprightness, and seek him with sincerity of heart; |
| 2 porque ele se deixa encontrar pelos que o não tentam, e manifesta-se aos que têm confiança nele. | 2 because he is found by those who do not put him to the test, and manifests himself to those who do not distrust him. |
| 3 Com efeito os pensamentos perversos afastam de Deus, e a Omnipotência, posta à prova, triunfa dos insensatos. | 3 For perverse thoughts separate men from God, and when his power is tested, it convicts the foolish; |
| 4 E assim na alma maligna não entrará a sabedoria, nem habitará no corpo sujeito ao pecado, | 4 because wisdom will not enter a deceitful soul, nor dwell in a body enslaved to sin. |
| 5 porque o Espírito Santo, educador (dos homens), foge do engano; afasta-se dos pensamentos desatinados, e retira-se ao aproximar-se a iniquidade. | 5 For a holy and disciplined spirit will flee from deceit, and will rise and depart from foolish thoughts, and will be ashamed at the approach of unrighteousness. |
| 6 De facto a Sabedoria é um espírito que ama os homens, mas não deixará sem castigo o blasfemador, pelas suas palavras, porque Deus sonda os rins, penetra até ao fundo do seu coração, e ouve (as palavras) da sua língua. | 6 For wisdom is a kindly spirit and will not free a blasphemer from the guilt of his words; because God is witness of his inmost feelings, and a true observer of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. |
| 7 Com efeito, o Espírito do Senhor enche o universo, e, como abrange tudo, tem conhecimento de tudo o que se diz. | 7 Because the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world, and that which holds all things together knows what is said; |
| 8 Por isso aquele que profere palavras ímpias, não se pode ocultar, e a justiça vingadora não passará ao largo dele. | 8 therefore no one who utters unrighteous things will escape notice, and justice, when it punishes, will not pass him by. |
| 9 O ímpio será interrogado sobre o seus próprios pensamentos, e o som das suas palavras chegará aos ouvidos de Deus, para castigo das suas iniquidades. | 9 For inquiry will be made into the counsels of an ungodly man, and a report of his words will come to the Lord, to convict him of his lawless deeds; |
| 10 Um ouvido cioso escuta todas as coisas, e o ruído das murmurações não se lhe esconderá. | 10 because a jealous ear hears all things, and the sound of murmurings does not go unheard. |
| 11 Abstende-vos, pois, de murmurações inúteis, e refreai a língua da detracção, porque a palavra (mais) secreta não passará em claro, e a boca que mente mata a alma. | 11 Beware then of useless murmuring, and keep your tongue from slander; because no secret word is without result, and a lying mouth destroys the soul. |
| 12 Não procureis ansiosos a morte com os descaminhos da vossa vida, nem atraiais a perdição com as obras das vossas mãos. | 12 Do not invite death by the error of your life, nor bring on destruction by the works of your hands; |
| 13 Com efeito. Deus não fez a morte, nem se alegra com a perdição dos vivos. | 13 because God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. |
| 14 Porquanto ele criou todas as coisas para a existência, e fez saudáveis todas as criaturas do mundo; não há nelas nenhum princípio de destruição, nem o domínio da morte se estende sobre a terra. | 14 For he created all things that they might exist, and the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them; and the dominion of Hades is not on earth. |
| 15 Porque a justiça é imortal. | 15 For righteousness is immortal. |
| 16 Os ímpios, porém, chamam a morte com as suas obras e palavras; julgando-a amiga, consomem-se de desejos por ela, fazem com ela aliança, e são, de facto, dignos de lhe pertencer. | 16 But ungodly men by their words and deeds summoned death; considering him a friend, they pined away, and they made a covenant with him, because they are fit to belong to his party. |
