| 3 que tivesse compaixão da cidade, que estava destruída, e, em breve, completamente arrasada, e que ouvisse a voz do sangue que clamava para ele; | 3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him, |
| 4 que se lembrasse das injustas mortes das crianças inocentes e das blasfémias proferidas contra o seu nome, e que se revestisse de indignação contra estes excessos. | 4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name. |
| 5 Macabeu, pois, chefe de grande número de gente, tornou-se invencível para os gentios, porque a ira do Senhor tinha-se (já) convertido em misericórdia. | 5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion. |
| 6 Dando de improviso sobre cidades e aldeias, incendiava-as, e, ocupando os lugares mais vantajosos, desbaratava numerosos inimigos. | 6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy, |
| 7 Era principalmente de noite que fazia as suas correrias. A fama do seu valor espalhava-se por toda a parte. | 7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide. |
| 8 Então Filipe, vendo os progressos que este homem ia fazendo, de dia para dia, os seus êxitos cada vez mais numerosos, escreveu a Ptolomeu, governador da Celesídria e da Fenícia, a pedir-lhe auxílio para defender os interesses do rei. | 8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest. |
| 9 Ptolomeu enviou-lhe logo Nicanor, filho de Patroclo, um dos grandes amigos do rei, dando-lhe não menos de vinte mil homens de diversas nações, para extinguir toda a raça dos Judeus, agregando-lhe por companheiro a Górgias, general de larga experiência nas coisas da guerra. | 9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience. |

| 11 Enviou, pois, sem perda de tempo, pelas cidades marítimas, a convidar os negociantes a que fossem comprar escravos judeus, prometendo-lhe dar-lhes noventa escravos por cada talento, sem pensar no castigo do Todo-Poderoso, que estava para cair sobre ele. | 11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him. |
| 12 Logo que Judas teve conhecimento da chegada de Nicanor, deu parte dela aos que o acompanhavam, | 12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach, |
| 13 Alguns deles, deixando-se possuir de medo e não confiando na justiça de Deus, fugiram para diversos lugares. | 13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away. |
| 14 Outros, porém, vendiam tudo o que lhes restava, e, ao mesmo tempo, rogavam ao Senhor que os livrasse do ímpio Nicanor, o qual, antes da batalha, os tinha já vendido. | 14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter- |
| 15 Quando não fosse por amor deles, (que Deus os salvasse) ao menos em consideração da aliança feita com seus país, e porque o seu nome santo e magnífico havia sido invocado sobre eles. | 15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name. |

| 17 tendo diante dos olhos o ímpio desacato cometido contra o santo lugar, como também a opressão imposta a cidade arruinada e a abolição das instituições dos antigos. | 17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life. |

| 20 (recordou) a batalha travada contra os Gálatas, em Babilônia, com tal felicidade que, não tendo ousado entrar em acção os Macedónios, seus aliados, eles, que ao todo eram só seis mil, mataram cento e vinte mil homens, por causa do socorro recebido do céu, alcançando por isso enormes vantagens. | 20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result. |

| 23 Além disto, mandou a Eleázar que lesse o livro santo e deu-lhe como santo-e-senha: Auxílio de Deus. Depois disto pôs-se à frente do primeiro corpo e acometeu Nicanor. | 23 Next, he ordered Esdrias to read the Holy Book aloud and gave them their watchword 'Help fromGod'. Then, putting himself at the head of the first division, he attacked Nicanor. |
| 24 Graças ao favor do Todo-Poderoso, mataram mais de nove mil homens; a maior parte do exército de Nicanor, enfraquecida com as feridas que recebera, foi obrigada a fugir. | 24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight. |
| 25 Também se apoderaram de todo o dinheiro dos que tinham vindo para os comprar. Foram perseguindo (os fugitivos) até longe, | 25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing: |
| 26 mas voltaram, vendo-se apertados pelo tempo, porque era véspera do sábado, motivo por que não continuaram a persegui-los. | 26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit. |
| 27 Tendo depois recolhido as armas e os despojos dos inimigos, celebraram o sábado, bem-dizendo repetidamente ao Senhor e glorificando-o, por os ter livrado naquele dia, derramando sobre eles como que os primeiros alvores da sua misericórdia. | 27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion. |
| 28 Depois do sábado, repartiram dos despojos com as vítimas da perseguição, com as viúvas e com os órfãos, reservando o resto para si e para seus filhos. | 28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children. |
| 29 Executadas estas coisas, fizeram todos a sua oração em comum, conjurando o misericordioso Senhor que se reconciliasse completamente com seus servos. | 29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants. |
| 30 Daqueles que estavam com Timóteo e com Báquides e que vinham contra eles, mataram mais de vinte mil homens, e tomaram valentemente altas fortalezas. Repartiram muitos despojos, dividindo-os em duas partes iguais: uma para eles, e outra para os perseguidos, para os órfãos, as viúvas e também para os velhos. | 30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged. |
| 31 Recolhidas as armas dos inimigos, puseram-nas todas de reserva, cuidadosamente, em lugares convenientes, e levaram o resto dos despojos para Jerusalém. | 31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem. |
| 32 Mataram também Filarques, que estava com Timóteo, homem perverso, que tinha feito muito mal aos Judeus. | 32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews. |
| 33 Quando estavam em Jerusalém rendendo a Deus acções de graças por esta vitória, Calistenes e outros mais, que tinham queimado as sagradas portas, refugiaram-se numa pequena casa; (os Judeus) nela os queimaram, dando-lhes a recompensa que mereciam as suas impiedades. | 33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege. |
| 34 Nicanor, porém, homem perversissimo, que tinha trazido mil negociantes para lhes vender os escravos judeus, | 34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews, |
| 35 humilhado com o socorro do Senhor por aqueles mesmos que tinha considerado como uma gente de nada, largada a vestidura de honra, correndo sozinho, como escravo fugitivo, pelo meio dos campos, chegou desacompanhado a Antioquia, numa aflição, pela perda do seu exército. | 35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed. |
| 36 Ele, que prometera aos Romanos que lhes pagaria o tributo com o que tirasse da venda dos cativos de Jerusalém, publicava então que os Judeus tinham um protector (Deus), e que por isso eram invulneráveis, porque seguiam as leis que lhes tinha dado. | 36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained. |
