| 1 José ordenou ao despenseiro da sua casa: Enche de trigo os seus sacos, quanto eles podem levar, e põe o dinheiro de cada um na boca do saco. | 1 And Joseph commanded the steward of his house, saying: Fill their sacks with corn, as much as they can hold: and put the money of every one in the top of his sack. |
| 2 Põe, também, na boca do saco do mais novo a minha taça de prata, e o dinheiro que deu pelo trigo. Assim foi feito. | 2 And in the mouth of the younger's sack put my silver cup, and the price which he gave for the wheat. And it was so done. |
| 3 Chegada a manhã, foram despedidos com os seus jumentos. | 3 And when the morning arose, they were sent away with their asses. |
| 4 Já haviam saído da cidade e tinham caminhado um pouco, quando José, chamando o despenseiro da casa, disse: Levanta-te, vai atrás daqueles homens, e, quando os tiveres alcançado, diz-lhes: Por que razão tornastes mal por bem? | 4 And when they were now departed out of the city, and had gone forward a little way; Joseph sendingfor the steward of his house, said: Arise, and pursue after the men: and when thou hast overtaken them, say to them: Why have you returned evil for good? |
| 5 (A taça que roubastes) é aquela pela qual bebe o teu senhor, e da qual se serve para as suas adivinhações: vós fizestes uma péssima coisa. | 5 The cup which you have stolen is that in which my lord drinketh, and in which he is wont to divine: you have done a very evil thing. |
| 6 (O despenseiro) fez como lhe foi mandado. Tendo-os alcançado, falou-lhes nos termos ordenados. | 6 He did as he had commanded him. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them the same words. |
| 7 Eles responderam: Por que fala assim o nosso senhor? Longe de nós, teus servos, tão grande crime. | 7 And they answered: Why doth our lord speak so, as though thy servants had committed so heinous a fact? |
| 8 Voltamos a trazer da terra de Canaan o dinheiro que tínhamos achado no cimo dos sacos; ora como é que, depois disto, pode ser que tenhamos furtado da casa do teu senhor ouro e prata? | 8 The money, that we found in the top of our sacks, we brought back to thee from the land of Chanaan: how then should it be that we should steal out of thy lord's house, gold or silver? |
| 9 Aquele dos teus servos, em cujo poder se encontrar o que procuras, morra, e seremos escravos do nosso senhor. | 9 With whomsoever of thy servants shall be found that which thou seekest, let him die, and we will be the bondmen of my lord. |
| 10 Ele disse-lhes: Faça-se segundo as vossas palavras: aquele em cujo poder se encontrar (o que eu procuro). Será meu escravo, e os outros irão em liberdade. | 10 And he said to them: Let it be according to your sentence: with whomsoever it shall be found, let him be my servant, and you shall be blameless. |
| 11 Portanto, pondo à pressa os sacos em terra, cada um abriu o seu. | 11 Them they speedily took down their sacks to the ground, and every man opened his sack. |
| 12 E (o despenseiro), tendo-os examinado, principiando desde o maior até ao mais pequeno, encontrou a taça no saco de Benjamim. | 12 Which when he had searched, beginning at the eldest and ending at the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin's sack. |
| 13 Então eles, rasgadas as vestes e carregados outra vez os jumentos, voltaram para a cidade. | 13 Then they rent their garments, and loading their asses again, returned into the town. |
| 14 Judá foi o primeiro que entrou com seus irmãos na casa de José, o qual ainda se não tinha retirado de lá, e todos se prostraram por terra diante dele. | 14 And Juda at the head of his brethren went in to Joseph, (for he was not yet gone out of the place, ) and they altogether fell down before him on the ground. |
| 15 José disse-lhes: Por que quiseste proceder assim? Porventura ignorais que em favor não há semelhante a mim na ciência de advinhar? | 15 And he said to them: Why would you do so? know you not that there is no one like me in the science of divining. |
| 16 Judá disse-lhe: Que responderemos nós ao meu senhor? ou que coisa diremos, ou que justa desculpa poderemos apresentar? Deus encontrou a iniquidade de teus servos: eis que somos todos escravos do meu senhor, nós e aquele junto do qual foi encontrada a taça. | 16 And Juda said to him: What shall we answer my lord? or what shall we say, or be able justly to allege? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are all bondmen to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found. |
| 17 José respondeu: Longe de mim proceder desse modo: aquele que roubou a taça, seja meu escravo, e vós ides livres para vosso pai. | 17 Joseph answered: God forbid that should do so: he that stole the cup, he shall be my bondman: and go you away free to your father. |
| 18 Então Judá, aproximando-se (de José), cheio de ânimo disse: Peço-te, meu senhor, que permitas ao teu servo dizer uma palavra aos teus ouvidos, e que não te agastes com o teu servo, porque tu és depois de Faraó, | 18 Then Juda coming hearer, said boldly: I beseech thee, my lord, let thy servant speak a word in thy ears,and be not angry with thy servant: for after Pharao thou art, |
| 19 o meu senhor. Primeiramente perguntaste a teus servos: Tendes pai ou irmão? | 19 My lord. Thou didst ask thy servants the first time: Have you a father or a brother? |
| 20 Nós respondemos-te, meu senhor: Temos um pai já velho, e um menino mais pequeno, que (lhe) nasceu na sua velhice, um irmão uterino daquele que morreu; é o único que resta de sua mãe, e o pai ama-o ternamente. | 20 And we answered thee, my lord: We have a father an old man, and a young boy, that was born in his old age; whose brother by the mother is dead: and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him tenderly. |
| 21 E tu disseste a teus, servos: Trazei-mo, e porei os meus olhos sobre ele. | 21 And thou saidst to thy servants: Bring him hither to me, and I will set my eyes on him. |
| 22 Nós replicámos ao meu senhor: O menino não pode deixar seu pai, porque se o deixar, (seu pai) morrerá, | 22 We suggested to my lord: The boy cannot leave his father: for if he leave him, he will die. |
| 23 e tu disseste a teus servos: Se não vier convosco vosso irmão mais novo, não vereis mais a minha face. | 23 And thou saidst to thy servants: Except your youngest brother come with you, you shall see my face no more. |
| 24 Tendo nós, pois, ido para nosso pai, teu servo, contámos tudo o que o meu senhor tinha dito. | 24 Therefore when we were gone up to thy servant our father, we told him all that my lord had said. |
| 25 E (passado algum tempo) nosso pai disse-nos: Voltai e comprai-nos mais algum trigo. | 25 And our father said: Go again, and buy us a little wheat. |
| 26 Nós dissemos-lhe: Não podemos ir: se nosso irmão mais novo for connosco, partiremos juntamente, mas de outra maneira, sem ele, não nos atrevemos a ver a face daquele homem. | 26 And we said to him: We cannot go: if our youngest brother go down with us, we will set out together: otherwise, without him we dare not see the man's face. |
| 27 Ao que ele respondeu: Vós sabeis que minha mulher me deu à luz dois filhos. | 27 Whereunto he answered: You know that my wife bore two. |
| 28 Um deles saiu de casa, e vós dissestes: Uma fera o devorou; e até agora não aparece. | 28 One went out, and you said: A beast devoured him: and hitherto he appeareth not. |
| 29 Se levardes também este, e lhe acontecer alguma desgraça no caminho, fareis descer com tristeza os meus cabelos brancos à habitação dos mortos. | 29 If you take this also, and any thing befall him in the way you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow unto hell. |
| 30 Portanto, se eu entrar em casa de nosso pai, teu servo, e faltar o menino, como a sua vida depende da dele, | 30 Therefore if I shall go to thy servant our father, and the boy be wanting, (whereas his life dependeth upon the life of him,) |
| 31 vendo que ele não está connosco, morrerá; e teus servos farão descer com tristeza os seus cabelos brancos à habitação dos mortos. | 31 And he shall see that he is not with us, he will die, and thy servants shall bring down his gray hairs with sorrow unto hell. |
| 32 Seja eu mesmo teu próprio escravo, eu que, sob minha fé, o recebi, e obriguei minha pessoa, dizendo: Se eu o não tornar a trazer, serei para sempre réu de pecado contra meu pai. | 32 Let me be tht proper servant, who took him into my trust, and promised, saying: If I bring him not again, I will be guilty of sin against my father for ever. |
| 33 Portanto eu ficarei teu escravo, em lugar do menino, ao serviço do meu senhor, e o menino volte com seus irmãos. | 33 Therefore I thy servant will stay instead of the boy in the service of my lord, and let the boy go up with his brethren. |
| 34 Não posso tornar para meu pai sem o menino, para que eu não seja testemunha da aflição que o oprimirá. | 34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I be a witness of the calamity that will oppress my father. |
