1 Seigneur tout puissant, Dieu d’Israël, c’est une âme angoissée, un esprit accablé qui crient vers toi.	1 “ ‘And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the troubled spirit cry out to you.
2 Écoute Seigneur et prends pitié car nous avons péché contre toi.	2 Listen, O Lord, and be merciful, for you are a merciful God, and so be merciful to us, for we have sinned before you.
3 Tu règnes éternellement alors que nous, nous périssons pour toujours.	3 For you are enthroned in eternity, but we will pass away in time.
4 Seigneur tout puissant, Dieu d’Israël, écoute la prière des morts d’Israël. Nous sommes les enfants de ceux qui ont péché contre toi; ils n’ont pas écouté la voix du Seigneur leur Dieu, et c’est pourquoi tous ces malheurs sont tombés sur nous.	4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons, who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and have joined themselves to evil.
5 Ne te souviens plus des péchés de nos pères mais rappelle-toi ta puissance et pense à ton nom,	5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but remember your hand and your name at this time.
6 car tu es le Seigneur notre Dieu, et c’est toi que nous louerons, Seigneur.	6 For you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you, O Lord.
7 Tu as mis dans nos cœurs ta crainte pour que nous invoquions ton nom. De notre lieu d’exil nous te louerons, car nous avons chassé de nos cœurs tout la ce qui portait nos pères à pécher contre toi.	7 And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before you.
8 Tu nous vois aujourd’hui dans le pays de notre exil, où tu nous as dispersés pour y être maudits, insultés, humiliés, à cause des péchés de nos pères qui se sont détournés du Seigneur notre Dieu.	8 And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day, where you have scattered us into disgrace, and into slander, and into sin, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who withdrew from you, O Lord our God.
9 Écoute, Israël, les commandements de vie, prête l’oreille et apprends à te conduire.	9 Listen, O Israel, to the commandments of life! Pay attention, so that you may learn prudence!
10 D’où vient, Israël, que tu es au pays de tes ennemis, et que tu vieillis sur une terre étrangère?	10 How is it, O Israel, that you are in the land of your enemies,
11 D’où vient que tu te souilles avec les morts, déjà compté entre ceux qui partent chez les morts?	11 that you have grown old in a foreign land, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?
12 C’est que tu as laissé la source de la sagesse.	12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
13 Si tu avais marché dans la voie de ton Dieu, la paix serait pour toujours ta demeure.	13 For if you had walked in the way of God, you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.
14 Apprends donc où est la sagesse, où est la force, où est l’intelligence; pour que tu saches où se trouvent longs jours et vie, la paix et les yeux rayonnants.	14 Learn where prudence is, where virtue is, where understanding is, so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are, where the light of the eyes and peace are.
15 Qui a découvert le lieu de la sagesse, qui pénétrera là où sont ses richesses?	15 Who has discovered its place? And who has entered its treasure chamber?
16 Où sont les chefs des nations qui dominaient jusqu’aux bêtes de la terre,	16 Where are the leaders of the peoples, and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,
17 qui jouaient avec les oiseaux du ciel?	17 who play among the birds of the air,
18 Ils amassaient l’argent, l’or en qui les hommes placent leur confiance. Ils ne se lassaient pas d’accumuler l’argent, et ils avaient l’art de l’utiliser: on ne saurait compter leurs œuvres.	18 who store up treasures of silver and gold, in which men trust, and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, who work with silver and are anxious about it, and whose works are inexplicable?
19 Ils ont passé, ils sont descendus chez les morts, et d’autres se sont levés à leur place.	19 They have been banished and have descended to hell, and others are risen up in their place.
20 Une jeune génération a vu le jour, s’est installée sur la terre, mais qui n’a pas su la voie de la connaissance.	20 The youth have seen the light and have dwelt upon the earth, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.
21 Ils n’ont pas vu ses sentiers, ils ne l’ont pas trouvée; leurs fils se sont égarés en chemin.	21 They have neither understood the paths of it, nor have their sons accepted it. It is far from their face.
22 On ne l’a pas connue en Canaan, on ne l’a pas vue dans Téman.	22 It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, nor has it been seen in Teman.
23 Fils d’Agar, avides de sagesse humaine, marchands de Madian et de Téma, conteurs de fables ou philosophes, ils n’ont pas connu le chemin de la sagesse, ils n’ont pu découvrir ses voies.	23 It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, who search for the practicality that is of the earth, the negotiators of Merran and Teman, and the storytellers, and the searchers of discretion and intelligence. Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, nor have they called to mind its paths.
24 Vois, Israël, comme est grande la Demeure de Dieu, qu’il est vaste son domaine,	24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!
25 étendu et sans limites, élevé au delà de toute mesure!	25 It is great and has no end! It is exalted and immense!
26 Là sont nés les fameux géants d’autrefois, d’une taille énorme, exercés à la guerre.	26 There were those who were called giants, who existed from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.
27 Dieu pourtant ne les a pas choisis pour leur enseigner les voies de la connaissance.	27 The Lord did not choose them, nor did they discover the way of instruction; for this reason they perished,
28 Ils sont morts pour n’avoir pas eu le savoir leur folie a fait leur perte.	28 and, because they did not have wisdom, they passed away as a result of their foolishness.
29 Qui est monté au ciel afin de la saisir? L’a-t-il fait descendre des nuages?	29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?
30 Qui l’a trouvée, traversant les mers? L’a-t-on rapportée à prix d’or?	30 Who has crossed the sea, and found her, and brought her, chosen instead of gold?
31 Personne ne connaît son chemin, nul n’a la moindre idée de ses sentiers.	31 There is no one who is able to know her ways, nor any who can search out her paths.
32 Mais celui qui sait toutes choses la connaît; il l’a trouvée par sa propre intelligence, lui qui forma la terre pour une éternité et la remplit de bêtes à quatre pattes.	32 Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her, and in his foresight he invented her, he who prepared the earth for time without end, and filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,
33 Il envoie la lumière et elle part; s’il la rappelle, elle tremble et obéit.	33 who sends out the light, and it goes, and who summoned it, and it obeyed him in fear.
34 Les étoiles se sont mises à briller, joyeuses, et chacune à son poste veille sur la nuit.	34 Yet the stars have given light from their posts, and they rejoiced.
35 Il les appelle; elles lui répondent: “Nous voici!” Quelle joie pour elles de briller pour leur Créateur!	35 They were called, and so they said, “Here we are,” and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.
36 C’est lui qui est notre Dieu, rien ne saurait lui être comparé.	36 This is our God, and no other can compare to him.
37 Il a trouvé, lui, la voie de la connaissance, et l’a confiée à Jacob, son serviteur, à Israël, son bien-aimé.	37 He invented the way of all instruction, and delivered it to Jacob his child, and to Israel his beloved.
38 C’est alors que la Sagesse est apparue sur terre elle a séjourné parmi les hommes.	38 After this, he was seen on earth, and he conversed with men.
