BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 In verità, in verità vì dico, che quello che non entra per la porta dell' ovile delle pecore, ma entra da lato, questo è furo e ladro.	1 'In al truth I tel you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but climbs in someother way, is a thief and a bandit.
2 Ma quello ch' entra per la porta, questo è pastore delle pecore.	2 He who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock;
3 E a costui il portinaro apre la porta, e le pecore odono la voce sua; ed esso chiama nominatamente tutte le sue pecore, e menale fuori.	3 the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leadsthem out.
4 E quando le ha messe fuori, va dinanzi a loro; e le pecore tutte sèguitano lui, imperò che conoscono la voce [sua].	4 When he has brought out al those that are his, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep fol ow becausethey know his voice.
5 E niuno altro sèguitano, anzi fuggono da lui; imperò che non conoscono la voce degli estranei.	5 They wil never fol ow a stranger, but wil run away from him because they do not recognise the voiceof strangers.'
6 Questa similitudine disse Iesù agli discepoli Ma loro non intesero.	6 Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he was saying to them.
7 Disse Iesù a loro un' altra volta in verità, in verita vi dico ch' io sono la porta delle pecore.	7 So Jesus spoke to them again: In all truth I tell you, I am the gate of the sheepfold.
8 E tutti coloro che sono venuti (inanzi a me) s?no furi e ladri, e le pecore non gli hanno voluto udire.	8 Al who have come before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep took no notice of them.
9 Io sono la porta: chiunque entrarà per me, si salvarà; ed entrarà, e uscirà, e trovarà buona pastore.	9 I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: such a one will go in and out and wil findpasture.
10 Ma il ladro non viene per altro che per involare e per ammazzare e per mettere a perdizione. Ma io sono venuto, acciò che abbiano vita più abbondante.	10 The thief comes only to steal and kil and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have itto the full.
11 Io sono il pastore buono. Il buono pastore dà l'anima per le pecore sue.	11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.
12 Ma il mercenario, il quale non è pastore, del quale non sono le pecore proprie, vede venire il lupo, e lascia le pecore, e fugge; e il lupo disperge e rapisce le pecore.	12 The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons thesheep as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and runs away, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep;
13 Onde il mercenario fugge, imperò ch' egli è mercenario, e non si pertiene a lui le pecore.	13 he runs away because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep.
14 Io sono pastore buono; e conosco le pecore mie, e conoscono me le mie.	14 I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me,
15 Sì come conoscette me il Padre, e io conosco il Padre; l' anima mia pongo per le pecore mie.	15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep.
16 E ancora ho altre pecore che non sono di questo ovile; e quelle m' è di bisogno di menare; e udiranno la voce mia, e farassi uno ovile e uno pastore.	16 And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and I must lead these too. They too willlisten to my voice, and there wil be only one flock, one shepherd.
17 Però il Padre mi ama; conciosia ch' io pongo l'anima mia, e ancora la assumerò.	17 The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.
18 Da me nullo la toglie; ma pongo quella da me medesimo; io ho potestà di ponere quella, e ho potestà ancora di assumerla; ho ricevuto questo comandamento dal Padre mio.	18 No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free wil , and as I have power to lay it down, so Ihave power to take it up again; and this is the command I have received from my Father.
19 Fu fatto un' altra volta discordia tra gli giudei per questi parlari.	19 These words caused a fresh division among the Jews.
20 Onde molti dicevano: egli ha il demonio, e impazzisce; il perchè voi l' udite?	20 Many said, 'He is possessed, he is raving; why do you listen to him?'
21 Altri dicevano: queste parole non sono dell' avente il demonio; or può il demonio aprire gli occhi de' ciechi?	21 Others said, 'These are not the words of a man possessed by a devil: could a devil open the eyes ofthe blind?'
22 E fatta fu Encenia (cioè la sacra del tempio) in Ierusalem; ed era d' inverno.	22 It was the time of the feast of Dedication in Jerusalem. It was winter,
23 E Iesù andava per il tempio, sotto il portico di Salamone.	23 and Jesus was in the Temple walking up and down in the Portico of Solomon.
24 E li giudei l'intorniorono, e dicevano a lui: insino a quando ci toglierai l'anima nostra? se tu sei Cristo, dinnelo manifestamente.	24 The Jews gathered round him and said, 'How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? Ifyou are the Christ, tel us openly.'
25 E lesà rispose (e disse): io vi parlo, e voi non mi credete; e l' opere, ch' io fo nel nome del Padre mio, rendono testimonianza di me.	25 Jesus replied: I have told you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name are mywitness;
26 Ma voi non mi credete, imperò che non siete delle pecore mie.	26 but you do not believe, because you are no sheep of mine.
27 Le pecore mie odono la voce mia; e io le conosco, e sèguitano me.	27 The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.
28 Io do a loro vita eterna; e non periranno in eterno, e niuno le toglierà delle mie mani.	28 I give them eternal life; they will never be lost and no one wil ever steal them from my hand.
29 Il mio Padre me le ha dato, ch' è maggiore di tutti; e niuno le può rapire dalle mani del mio Padre.	29 The Father, for what he has given me, is greater than anyone, and no one can steal anything fromthe Father's hand.
30 E il Padre e io siamo una cosa.	30 The Father and I are one.
31 Allora gli giudei presero le pietre per lapidarlo.	31 The Jews fetched stones to stone him,
32 Disse a loro Iesù: molte buone opere vi ho dimostrate del Padre mio; per le quali mi volete lapidare?	32 so Jesus said to them, 'I have shown you many good works from my Father; for which of these areyou stoning me?'
33 Risposero gli giudei, (e dissero): noi non ti vogliamo lapidare per le buone opere, ma per le biasteme; conciosia cosa che tu sei uomo, e faiti Iddio.	33 The Jews answered him, 'We are stoning you, not for doing a good work, but for blasphemy; thoughyou are only a man, you claim to be God.'
34 Rispose a loro Iesù, (e disse): non è egli scritto nella vostra legge, che voi siete dii (e figliuoli dell' Altissimo tutti)?	34 Jesus answered: Is it not written in your Law: I said, you are gods?
35 Adunque se egli disse ch' erano dii (e figliuoli dell' Altissimo) tutti quelli a' quali è fatta la parola di Dio, e la scrittura non può mentire,	35 So it uses the word 'gods' of those people to whom the word of God was addressed -- and scripturecannot be set aside.
36 adunque colui il quale il Padre ha santificato e mandato nel mondo, voi gli dite: tu biastemi, perchè egli dice: io sono Figliuolo di Dio?	36 Yet to someone whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world you say, 'You areblaspheming' because I said, 'I am Son of God.'
37 Se io non fo l'opere del Padre mio, non mi credete.	37 If I am not doing my Father's work, there is no need to believe me;
38 Ma se io le fo, e non mi volete credere, almeno credete le opere; imperò che loro dimostrano che io sono nel Padre, e il Padre è in me.	38 but if I am doing it, then even if you refuse to believe in me, at least believe in the work I do; then youwil know for certain that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.
39 Loro adunque il cercavano di prendere; ed egli uscitte fuori di loro mani.	39 They again wanted to arrest him then, but he eluded their clutches.
40 Ed egli un' altra volta andossene oltre il Giordano, in quel luogo dove prima battezzava Ioanne; e ivi dimorò.	40 He went back again to the far side of the Jordan to the district where John had been baptising at firstand he stayed there.
41 Venendo adunque molti a lui, dicevano come, certo, Ioanne nullo avea fatto segno.	41 Many people who came to him said, 'John gave no signs, but all he said about this man was true';
42 Ma tutte le cose, che disse Ioanne di questo, erano vere. Onde molti credettero in lui.	42 and many of them believed in him.
