Matthew 11

1 And it happened that, when Jesus had completed instructing his twelve disciples, he went away from there in order to teach and to preach in their cities.	1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ces consignes à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit delà pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
2 Now when John had heard, in prison, about the works of Christ, sending two of his disciples, he said to him,	2 Or Jean, dans sa prison, avait entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ. Il lui envoya de ses disciplespour lui dire:
3 “Are you he who is to come, or should we expect another?”	3 "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?"
4 And Jesus, responding, said to them: “Go and report to John what you have heard and seen.	4 Jésus leur répondit: "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez:
5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor are evangelized.	5 les aveugles voient et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, lesmorts ressuscitent et la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres;
6 And blessed is he who has found no offense in me.”	6 et heureux celui qui ne trébuchera pas à cause de moi!"
7 Then, after they departed, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?	7 Tandis que ceux-là s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean: "Qu'êtes-vousallés contempler au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
8 So what did you go out to see? A man in soft garments? Behold, those who are clothed in soft garments are in the houses of kings.	8 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu de façon délicate? Mais ceux qui portent des habitsdélicats se trouvent dans les demeures des rois.
9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.	9 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés faire? Voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu'un prophète.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send my Angel before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.’	10 C'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que moi j'envoie mon messager en avant de toi pour préparerta route devant toi.
11 Amen I say to you, among those born of women, there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.	11 "En vérité je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n'en a pas surgi de plus grand que Jeanle Baptiste; et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.
12 But from the days of John the Baptist, even until now, the kingdom of heaven has endured violence, and the violent carry it away.	12 Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent le Royaume des Cieux souffre violence, etdes violents s'en emparent.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied, even until John.	13 Tous les prophètes en effet, ainsi que la Loi, ont mené leurs prophéties jusqu'à Jean.
14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah, who is to come.	14 Et lui, si vous voulez m'en croire, il est cet Elie qui doit revenir.
15 Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.	15 Que celui qui a des oreilles entende!
16 But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplace,	16 "Mais à qui vais-je comparer cette génération? Elle ressemble à des gamins qui, assis sur lesplaces, en interpellent d'autres,
17 who, calling out to their companions, say: ‘We played music for you, and you did not dance. We lamented, and you did not mourn.’	17 en disant: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé! Nous avons entonné unchant funèbre, et vous ne vous êtes pas frappé la poitrine!
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say, ‘He has a demon.’	18 Jean vient en effet, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et l'on dit: Il est possédé!
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking; and they say, ‘Behold, a man who eats voraciously and who drinks wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is justified by her sons.”	19 Vient le Fils de l'homme, mangeant et buvant, et l'on dit: Voilà un glouton et un ivrogne, un amides publicains et des pécheurs! Et justice a été rendue à la Sagesse par ses oeuvres."
20 Then he began to rebuke the cities in which many of his miracles were accomplished, for they still had not repented.	20 Alors il se mit à invectiver contre les villes qui avaient vu ses plus nombreux miracles maisn'avaient pas fait pénitence.
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in haircloth and ashes.	21 "Malheur à toi, Chorazeïn! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chezvous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps que, sous le sac et dans la cendre, elles se seraientrepenties.
22 Yet truly, I say to you, Tyre and Sidon shall be forgiven more than you, on the day of judgment.	22 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour Tyr et Sidon, au Jour du Jugement, il y aura moins de rigueurque pour vous.
23 And you, Capernaum, would you be exalted all the way to heaven? You shall descend all the way to Hell. For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, perhaps it would have remained, even to this day.	23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, crois-tu que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel? Jusqu'à l'Hadès tu descendras.Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui.
24 Yet truly, I say to you, that the land of Sodom shall be forgiven more than you, on the day of judgment.”	24 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour le pays de Sodome il y aura moins de rigueur, au Jour duJugement, que pour toi."
25 At that time, Jesus responded and said: “I acknowledge you, Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones.	25 En ce temps-là Jésus prit la parole et dit: "Je te bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre,d'avoir caché cela aux sages et aux intelligents et de l'avoir révélé aux tout-petits.
26 Yes, Father, for this was pleasing before you.	26 Oui, Père, car tel a été ton bon plaisir.
27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.	27 Tout m'a été remis par mon Père, et nul ne connaît le Fils si ce n'est le Père, et nul ne connaît lePère si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut bien le révéler.
28 Come to me, all you who labor and have been burdened, and I will refresh you.	28 "Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et ployez sous le fardeau, et moi je vous soulagerai.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.	29 Chargez-vous de mon joug et mettez-vous à mon école, car je suis doux et humble de coeur, etvous trouverez soulagement pour vos âmes.
30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden is light.”	30 Oui, mon joug est aisé et mon fardeau léger."
