He who loves his son will frequently chastise him, so that he may be happy in the very end, and not grope for the doors of his neighbors.1 Celui qui aime son fils ne lui épargne pas le fouet, plus tard il trouvera en lui sa joie.
He who instructs his son will be praised over him and will glory in him, in the midst of his household.2 Qui élève bien son fils y trouvera des satisfactions, il en sera fier devant ses proches.
He who teaches his son will make his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends, he will glory in him.3 Celui qui instruit son fils rendra jaloux son ennemi; il s’en réjouira devant ses amis.
When his father has died, it will be as if he were not dead. For he will have left behind someone who is like himself.4 Quand ce père disparaît, c’est comme s’il n’était pas mort, car il laisse après lui un autre lui-même.
In his life, he saw him and rejoiced in him. And at his passing, he was not sorrowful, nor was he confounded in the sight of his enemies.5 Durant sa vie, c’était son bonheur de le voir; quand vient la mort il n’a pas de chagrin.
For he left behind himself a defender of his house against his enemies, and someone who will repay his friends with kindness.6 Car il laisse, face à ses ennemis, celui qui fera justice, et pour ses amis, celui qui leur montrera de la reconnaissance.
For the sake of the souls of his sons, he will bind up his wounds, and at every voice, his gut will be stirred up.7 Celui qui gâte son fils devra panser ses blessures; au moindre de ses cris il sera retourné.
An untamed horse becomes stubborn, and a child left to himself becomes headstrong.8 Un cheval indompté devient impossible, un fils laissé à lui-même devient intraitable.
Coddle a son, and he will make you afraid. Play with him, and he will make you sorrowful.9 Tu veux choyer ton enfant? un jour il te fera peur; folâtre avec lui, il te causera du chagrin.
You should not laugh with him; otherwise you may have grief, and in the end, your teeth be clenched.10 Ne ris pas avec lui, si tu ne veux pas un jour t’affliger avec lui et finalement grincer des dents.
You should not give him power in his youth, but you should not despise his thoughts.11 Ne lui laisse pas la bride sur le cou dans sa jeunesse,
Bow down his neck in his youth, and slap his sides while he is a child, lest perhaps he may become stubborn, and then he will not trust you, and so he will bring sorrow to your soul.12 Malmène lui les côtes quand il est petit, de peur qu’il ne s’obstine et se rebelle.
Instruct your son, and work with him, lest you give offense by his shameful behavior.13 Éduque bien ton fils, travaille-le, ou sinon son inconduite se retournera contre toi.
Better is a healthy pauper with a strong constitution, than a wealthy man who is weak and afflicted by maladies.14 Mieux vaut un pauvre en bonne santé et vigoureux qu’un riche éprouvé dans son corps.
A healthy soul with the sanctity of justice is better than all the gold and silver. And a sound body is better than immense revenues.15 La santé et une bonne constitution valent mieux que tout l’or du monde, et un corps robuste, qu’une immense fortune.
There is no revenue above the revenue of a healthy body. And there is no delight above a joyful heart.16 Il n’y a pas de plus grande richesse que la santé du corps, il n’y a pas de plaisir supérieur à la joie de vivre.
Death is better than a bitter life. And eternal rest is better than continual sickness.17 Mieux vaut la mort qu’une vie de misères, et le repos éternel qu’une maladie tenace.
Good things hidden in a closed mouth are like seats at a feast placed around a grave.18 Déposer sur les tombes des offrandes de nourriture, c’est présenter de bonnes choses à une bouche fermée;
What benefit is there in an offering to an idol?
He sees with his eyes and groans, like a eunuch who embraces a virgin and sighs.21 Ne te laisse pas aller à la tristesse, ne te tourmente pas au sujet de ton avenir.
You should not give your soul to sadness, and you should not afflict yourself by your own counsel.22 Un cœur joyeux, voilà ce qui maintient l’homme en vie; c’est la gaieté qui prolonge ses jours.
The gladness of the heart is the life of a man, and it is a treasure of sanctity without defect. And the exultation of a man is length of life.23 Allons! Divertis-toi et console ton cœur; chasse la tristesse loin de toi, car la tristesse en a perdu beaucoup et elle ne sert absolument à rien.
Take pity on your own soul by pleasing God, and show self-restraint. Gather your heart into his sanctity, and drive sadness far away from yourself.24 La jalousie et la fureur abrègent la vie, les soucis font vieillir avant l’âge.
For sadness has killed many, and there is no usefulness in it.25 Qui a le cœur joyeux a bon appétit; ce qu’il mange lui profite.
Envy and anger will diminish your days, and pensiveness will bring old age before its time.
A cheerful and good heart is like a feast. And its feasts are formed by diligence.
