1 Man, born of woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.	1 - L'uomo generato da donna, breve tempo vive, di molte miserie è ripieno:
2 He comes forth like a flower, and is crushed, and he flees, as if a shadow, and never remains in the same state.	2 qual fiore egli spunta e si spezza, sfugge qual'ombra e mai non resta in uno stesso stato.
3 And do you consider it fitting to look down with your eyes on someone in this way and to lead him into judgment with you?	3 E tu ti degni d'aprir gli occhi tuoi sopra tale essere, e condurlo a giudizio con te?
4 Who can make him clean who is conceived of unclean seed? Are you not the only one who can?	4 Chi potrà rendere mondo chi fu concepito da seme immondo? Non tu forse, che sei solo?
5 The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with you; you have determined his limits, which cannot be surpassed.	5 Brevi sono i dì dell'uomo, il numero dei mesi suoi è presso di te:gli ponesti dei termini che non si potranno oltrepassare.
6 Withdraw a little from him, so that he may rest, until his awaited day arrives, like that of the hired hand.	6 Allontanati alquanto da lui, sì ch'ei si riposi, fino a che giunga bramata come d'un mercenario, la sua giornata.
7 A tree has hope: if it has been cut, it turns green again, and its branches spring forth.	7 V'è per l'albero una speranza: qualor venga reciso, ancor rinverdisce, e i suoi rami germogliano;
8 If its roots grow old in the earth, and its trunk passes into dust,	8 se invecchi nel terreno la sua radice, e nella polvere perisca il suo ceppo,
9 at the scent of water, it will sprout and bring forth leaves, as when it had first been planted.	9 ad un vapor d'acqua rigèrmina, e getta la chioma come quando fu piantato in principio.
10 Truly, when a man dies, and has been left unprotected, and has decayed, I ask you where is he?	10 Ma l'uomo quando sia morto, e spogliato e consunto - ov'è mai egli?
11 It is as if the waters had receded from the sea and an emptied river had dried up;	11 Come se si partissero le acque del mare, e il fiume si vuotasse e inaridisse,
12 just so, when a man is fallen asleep, he will not rise again, until the heavens are worn away; he will not awaken, nor rise from his sleep.	12 così l'uomo, poi che giacque, non sorgerà: finchè non s'infranga il cielo, egli non si sveglierà, nè si leverà su dal suo sonno.
13 Who will grant this to me, that you will protect me in the underworld, and hide me until your fury passes by, and establish a time for me, in which you will remember me?	13 Oh! se tu negl'inferi mi nascondessi, mi occultassi fino al passar dell'ira tua, e mi stabilissi un tempo in cui ti ricordassi di me!
14 Do you suppose that a dead man will live again? On each of the days in which I now battle, I wait until my transformation occurs.	14 Che forse un uomo morto potrà rivivere? In tutti i dì della mia milizia aspettofino a che venga la mia muta [di guardia].
15 You will call me and I will answer you; to the work of your hands, you will extend your right hand.	15 Tu mi chiamerai ed io ti risponderò, all'opera delle tue mani stenderai la mano.
16 Indeed, you have numbered my steps, but you have been lenient with my sins.	16 Bensì tu hai contato i miei passi; ma perdona ai miei peccati!
17 You have sealed up my offenses, as if in a purse, but you have cured my iniquity.	17 Sigillasti come in una borsa i miei delitti; ma avesti cura della mia iniquità.
18 A falling mountain flows away, and a stone is transferred from its place.	18 Il monte cadendo frantumasi, e la rupe si sposta dal suo luogo.
19 Waters wear away stones, and with a flood the land is reduced little by little; and similarly, you will destroy man.	19 Le acque corrodono i macigni, e dall'alluvione a poco a poco la terra è consumata: così pure tu distruggerai l'uomo.
20 You have strengthened him for a little while, so that he may cross over into eternity. You will change his face and send him forth.	20 Per poco gli desti vigore, affinchè passasse via per sempre, sfigurerai il suo volto e lo scaccerai via.
21 Whether his sons have been noble or ignoble, he will not understand.	21 Che i suoi figli siano onorati, ovvero inonorati - egli l'ignora;
22 And in this way his body, while he yet lives, will have grief, and his soul will mourn over himself.	22 ma, mentre vive, la sua carne fa doglia, e l'anima sua addosso a lui fa lutto.»
