CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
Hiram, the king of Tyre, also sent his servants to Solomon. For he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father. Now Hiram had been a friend to David the entire time.1 Quando Hirão, rei de Tiro, soube que Salomão fora ungido rei em lugar de seu pai, enviou-lhe os seus servos, pois Hirão fora sempre amigo de Davi.
Then Solomon sent to Hiram, saying:2 Salomão, de seu lado, mandou a Hirão a mensagem seguinte:
“You know the will of my father David, and that he was not able to build a house to the name of the Lord his God, because of the wars that were imminent all around him, until the Lord set them under the steps of his feet.3 Sabes que Davi, meu pai, não pôde edificar um templo em nome do Senhor seu Deus, por causa das guerras que teve de sustentar até o dia em que o Senhor pôs os seus inimigos sob a planta de seus pés.
But now the Lord my God has given rest to me on all sides. And there is no adversary, nor occurrence of evil.4 Agora, porém, o Senhor deu-me paz de todos os lados: não há mais inimigos nem calamidades.
For this reason, I intend to build a temple to the name of the Lord my God, just as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying: ‘Your son, whom I will set in your place, upon your throne, he himself shall build a house to my name.’5 Por isso penso em edificar um templo em nome do Senhor, meu Deus. O Senhor, com efeito, falara disso a Davi, meu pai, nestes termos: Teu filho, que eu farei sentar em teu lugar no trono, este edificará um templo em meu nome.
Therefore, order that your servants may cut down for me cedars from Lebanon. And let my servants be with your servants. Then I will give to you, for the wages of your servants, whatever you will ask. For you know that there is not a man among my people who knows how to cut wood as well as the Sidonians.”6 Dá ordem, pois, aos teus servos, que me cortem cedros do Líbano. Meus operários trabalharão com os teus, e pagarei a estes o salário que pedires, pois sabes que não há ninguém entre nós que saiba cortar árvores como os sidônios.
Therefore, when Hiram had heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and he said, “Blessed be the Lord God this day, who gave to David a very wise son over this numerous people!”7 Hirão, ouvindo a mensagem de Salomão, encheu-se de grande alegria, e disse: Bendito seja o Senhor, que deu a Davi um filho cheio de sabedoria para governar esse grande povo!
And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying: “I have heard the things that you would entrust to me. And I will do your whole will concerning the cedar trees and spruce trees.8 Em seguida, mandou responder a Salomão: Recebi tua mensagem. Farei tudo o que desejas acerca das madeiras de cedro e de cipreste.
My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. And I will arrange them together as rafts on the sea, as far as the place that you will indicate to me. And I will land them there, and you will take them. And you shall offer to me what is necessary to give food to my house.”9 Meus servos as descerão do Líbano até o mar, e dali as farei conduzir em jangadas até o lugar que me designares. Ali as desatarão, e tu as mandarás receber. De teu lado, corresponderás aos meus desejos, fornecendo víveres à minha casa.
And so, Hiram gave to Solomon cedar trees and spruce trees, in accord with his whole will.10 Hirão deu, pois, a Salomão, tanta madeira de cedro e de cipreste quanta ele quis.
Then Solomon offered to Hiram twenty thousand cor of wheat, as food for his house, and twenty cor of the purest oil. These things Solomon gave as a tribute to Hiram every year.11 E Salomão deu-lhe vinte mil coros de trigo para o sustento de sua casa, bem como vinte coros de óleo bruto. Isso fornecia Salomão a Hirão cada ano.
And the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, just as he said to him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two struck a pact.12 O Senhor tinha dado sabedoria a Salomão, conforme prometera. Houve paz entre Hirão e Salomão, e fizeram aliança entre si.
And king Solomon chose workers from all of Israel, and the conscription was of thirty thousand men.13 O rei Salomão escolheu trinta mil operários em todo o Israel.
And he sent them into Lebanon, ten thousand each month, in turns, so that for two months they were in their own houses. And Adoniram was over this type of conscription.14 Ele os mandava por seu turno ao Líbano, dez mil cada mês; passavam assim um mês no Líbano e dois meses em sua casa. Adonirão dirigia os trabalhos.
And Solomon had seventy thousand of those who were carrying burdens, and eighty thousand of those who cut stones from the mountain,15 Salomão tinha ainda setenta mil carregadores e oitenta mil cortadores de pedras na montanha,
aside from the commanders who were over each work, in number three thousand and three hundred, who gave orders to the people and to those who were doing the work.16 sem contar três mil e trezentos contramestres que presidiam os vários trabalhos, os quais davam ordens ao povo e aos operários.
And the king ordered them to bring great stones, precious stones, for the foundation of the temple, and to square them.17 O rei ordenou que extraíssem grandes e belas pedras, que deviam ser talhadas para os alicerces do templo.
And these were shaped by the stoneworkers of Solomon and the stoneworkers of Hiram. And the men of Gebal also prepared the wood and the stones in order to build the house.18 Os operários de Salomão e os de Hirão talharam as pedras, enquanto os giblieus preparavam as madeiras e as pedras para a construção da casa.
