Genesis 44

1 Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.	1 Puis Joseph dit à son intendant: "Remplis les sacs de ces gens avec autant de vivres qu'ils peuventporter et mets l'argent de chacun à l'entrée de son sac.
2 But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.	2 Ma coupe, celle d'argent, tu la mettras à l'entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec le prix de son grain." Etil fit comme Joseph avait dit.
3 And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.	3 Lorsque le matin parut, on renvoya nos gens avec leurs ânes.
4 And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?	4 Ils étaient à peine sortis de la ville et n'étaient pas bien loin que Joseph dit à son intendant:"Debout! Cours après ces hommes, rattrape-les et dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?
5 The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”	5 N'est-ce pas ce qui sert à mon maître pour boire et aussi pour lire les présages? C'est mal ce quevous avez fait!"
6 He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.	6 Il les attrapa donc et leur redit ces paroles.
7 And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?	7 Mais ils répondirent: "Pourquoi Monseigneur parle-t-il ainsi?Loin de tes serviteurs de faire unechose pareille!
8 The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?	8 Vois donc: l'argent que nous avions trouvé à l'entrée de nos sacs à blé, nous te l'avons rapporté dupays de Canaan, comment aurions-nous volé de la maison de ton maître argent ou or?
9 Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”	9 Celui de tes serviteurs avec qui on trouvera l'objet sera mis à mort et nous-mêmes deviendronsesclaves de Monseigneur."
10 And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”	10 Il reprit: "Eh bien! Qu'il en soit comme vous avez dit: celui avec qui on trouvera l'objet sera monesclave, mais vous autres vous serez quittes."
11 And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.	11 Vite, chacun descendit à terre son sac à blé et chacun l'ouvrit.
12 And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.	12 Il les fouilla en commençant par l'aîné et en finissant par le plus jeune, et la coupe fut trouvéedans le sac de Benjamin!
13 But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.	13 Alors, ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, rechargèrent chacun son âne et revinrent à la ville.
14 And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.	14 Lorsque Juda et ses frères entrèrent dans la maison de Joseph, celui-ci s'y trouvait encore, et ilstombèrent à terre devant lui.
15 And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”	15 Joseph leur demanda: "Quelle est cette action que vous avez commise? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'unhomme comme moi sait deviner?"
16 And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”	16 Et Juda répondit: "Que dirons-nous à Monseigneur, comment parler et comment nous justifier?C'est Dieu qui a mis en évidence la faute de tes serviteurs. Nous voici donc les esclaves de Monseigneur, aussibien nous autres que celui aux mains duquel on a trouvé la coupe."
17 Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”	17 Mais il reprit: "Loin de moi d'agir ainsi! L'homme aux mains duquel la coupe a été trouvée seramon esclave, mais vous, retournez en paix chez votre père."
18 Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.	18 Alors Juda s'approcha de lui et dit: "S'il te plaît, Monseigneur, permets que ton serviteur fasseentendre un mot aux oreilles de Monseigneur, sans que ta colère s'enflamme contre ton serviteur, car tu esvraiment comme Pharaon!
19 My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’	19 Monseigneur avait posé cette question à ses serviteurs:Avez-vous encore un père ou un frère?
20 And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’	20 Et nous avons répondu à Monseigneur: Nous avons un vieux père et un cadet, qui lui est né danssa vieillesse; le frère de celui-ci est mort, il reste le seul enfant de sa mère et notre père l'aime!
21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’	21 Alors tu as dit à tes serviteurs: Amenez-le moi, que mon regard se pose sur lui.
22 We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’	22 Nous avons répondu à Monseigneur: L'enfant ne peut pas quitter son père; s'il quitte son père,celui-ci en mourra.
23 And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’	23 Mais tu as insisté auprès de tes serviteurs: Si votre plus jeune frère ne descend pas avec vous,vous ne serez plus admis en ma présence.
24 Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.	24 Donc, lorsque nous sommes remontés chez ton serviteur, mon père, nous lui avons apporté lesparoles de Monseigneur.
25 And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’	25 Et lorsque notre père a dit: Retournez pour nous acheter un peu de vivres,
26 And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’	26 nous avons répondu: Nous ne pouvons pas descendre. Nous ne descendrons que si notre jeunefrère est avec nous, car il n'est pas possible que nous soyons admis en présence de cet homme sans que notreplus jeune frère soit avec nous.
27 To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.	27 Alors ton serviteur, mon père, nous a dit: Vous savez bien que ma femme ne m'a donné que deuxenfants:
28 One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.	28 l'un m'a quitté et j'ai dit: il a été mis en pièces! et je ne l'ai plus revu jusqu'à présent.
29 If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’	29 Que vous preniez encore celui-ci d'auprès de moi et qu'il lui arrive malheur et vous feriezdescendre dans la peine mes cheveux blancs au shéol.
30 Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)	30 Maintenant, si j'arrive chez ton serviteur, mon père, sans que soit avec nous l'enfant à l'âmeduquel son âme est liée,
31 and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.	31 dès qu'il verra que l'enfant n'est pas avec nous, il mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendredans l'affliction les cheveux blancs de ton serviteur, notre père, au shéol.
32 Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’	32 Et ton serviteur s'est porté garant de l'enfant auprès de mon père, en ces termes: Si je ne te leramène pas, j'en serai coupable envers mon père toute ma vie.
33 And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.	33 Maintenant, que ton serviteur reste comme esclave de Monseigneur à la place de l'enfant et quecelui-ci remonte avec ses frères.
34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”	34 Comment, en effet, pourrais-je remonter chez mon père sans que l'enfant soit avec moi? Je neveux pas voir le malheur qui frapperait mon père."
