1 Then Joseph instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Fill their sacks with grain, as much as they are able to hold. And place each one’s money at the top of the sack.	1 Diede poi quest’ordine al suo maggiordomo: «Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere e rimetti il denaro di ciascuno alla bocca del suo sacco.
2 But place my silver bowl, and the price that he gave for the wheat, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest.” And so it was done.	2 Metterai la mia coppa, la coppa d’argento, alla bocca del sacco del più giovane, insieme con il denaro del suo grano». Quello fece secondo l’ordine di Giuseppe.
3 And when morning arose, they were sent away with their donkeys.	3 Alle prime luci del mattino quegli uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini.
4 And now they had departed from the city and had set out a short distance. Then Joseph, sending for the steward of his house, said: “Rise up and pursue the men. And when you have overtaken them, say: ‘Why have you returned evil for good?	4 Erano appena usciti dalla città e ancora non si erano allontanati, quando Giuseppe disse al suo maggiordomo: «Su, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e di’ loro: “Perché avete reso male per bene?
5 The cup that you have stolen, it is that from which my lord drinks, and in which he is accustomed to discern signs. You have done a very sinful thing.’ ”	5 Non è forse questa la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e per mezzo della quale egli suole trarre i presagi? Avete fatto male a fare così”».
6 He did as he had been ordered. And having overtaken them, he spoke to them according to the order.	6 Egli li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole.
7 And they responded: “Why does our lord speak in this way, as though your servants had committed such a shameful act?	7 Quelli gli risposero: «Perché il mio signore dice questo? Lontano dai tuoi servi il fare una cosa simile!
8 The money, which we found at the top of our sacks, we carried back to you from the land of Canaan. So in what way does it follow that we would steal, from the house of your lord, gold or silver?	8 Ecco, se ti abbiamo riportato dalla terra di Canaan il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi, come avremmo potuto rubare argento o oro dalla casa del tuo padrone?
9 Whichever of your servants will be found to have what you seek, may he die, and we shall be the servants of my lord.”	9 Quello dei tuoi servi, presso il quale si troverà, sia messo a morte e anche noi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore».
10 And he said to them: “Let it be according to your verdict. With whomever it will be found, let him be my servant, but you will be unharmed.”	10 Rispose: «Ebbene, come avete detto, così sarà: colui, presso il quale si troverà la coppa, diventerà mio schiavo e voi sarete innocenti».
11 And so, they quickly placed their sacks down to the ground, and each one was opened.	11 Ciascuno si affrettò a scaricare a terra il suo sacco e lo aprì.
12 And when he had searched, beginning with the oldest, all the way to the youngest, he found the cup in Benjamin’s sack.	12 Quegli li frugò cominciando dal maggiore e finendo con il più piccolo, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino.
13 But they, tearing their garments and burdening their donkeys again, returned to the town.	13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il proprio asino e tornarono in città.
14 And Judah, first among his brothers, entered to Joseph (for he had not yet departed from the place) and together they all fell down before him to the ground.	14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui.
15 And he said to them: “Why would you choose to act in this way? Could you be ignorant that there is no one like me in the knowledge of discerning signs?”	15 Giuseppe disse loro: «Che azione avete commesso? Non vi rendete conto che un uomo come me è capace di indovinare?».
16 And Judah said to him, “What could we answer to my lord? And what would we be able to say, or to justly claim? God has discovered the iniquity of your servants. See, we have all become servants to my lord, both we, and he with whom the cup was found.”	16 Giuda disse: «Che diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio stesso ha scoperto la colpa dei tuoi servi! Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, noi e colui che è stato trovato in possesso della coppa».
17 Joseph responded: “Far be it from me that I should act in this way. He who stole the cup, he will be my servant. But you may go away free to your father.”	17 Ma egli rispose: «Lontano da me fare una cosa simile! L’uomo trovato in possesso della coppa, quello sarà mio schiavo: quanto a voi, tornate in pace da vostro padre».
18 Then Judah, approaching closer, said confidently: “I beg you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in your ears, and do not be angry with your servant. For you are next to Pharaoh.	18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: «Perdona, mio signore, sia permesso al tuo servo di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servo, perché uno come te è pari al faraone!
19 My lord, you questioned your servants before: ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’	19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servi: “Avete ancora un padre o un fratello?”.
20 And we answered you, my lord: ‘There is our father, an old man, and a young boy, who was born in his old age. His brother of the same womb has died, and he alone is left to his mother and father, who truly love him tenderly.’	20 E noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Abbiamo un padre vecchio e un figlio ancora giovane natogli in vecchiaia, il fratello che aveva è morto ed egli è rimasto l’unico figlio di quella madre e suo padre lo ama”.
21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him to me, and I will set my eyes on him.’	21 Tu avevi detto ai tuoi servi: “Conducetelo qui da me, perché possa vederlo con i miei occhi”.
22 We suggested to my lord: ‘The boy is not able to leave his father. For if he sends him away, he will die.’	22 Noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Il giovinetto non può abbandonare suo padre: se lascerà suo padre, questi ne morirà”.
23 And you said to your servants: ‘Unless your youngest brother arrives with you, you will not see my face any more.’	23 Ma tu avevi ingiunto ai tuoi servi: “Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza”.
24 Therefore, when we had gone up to your servant our father, we explained to him all that my lord had spoken.	24 Fatto ritorno dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore.
25 And our father said: ‘Return and buy us a little wheat.’	25 E nostro padre disse: “Tornate ad acquistare per noi un po’ di viveri”.
26 And we said to him: ‘We cannot go. If our youngest brother descends with us, we will set out together. Otherwise, in his absence, we do not dare to see the face of the man.’	26 E noi rispondemmo: “Non possiamo ritornare laggiù: solo se verrà con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo; non saremmo ammessi alla presenza di quell’uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore”.
27 To which he responded: ‘You know that my wife conceived twice by me.	27 Allora il tuo servo, mio padre, ci disse: “Voi sapete che due figli mi aveva procreato mia moglie.
28 One went out, and you said, “A beast devoured him.” And since then, he has not appeared.	28 Uno partì da me e dissi: certo è stato sbranato! Da allora non l’ho più visto.
29 If you take this one also, and anything happens to him on the way, you will lead my grey hairs down with grief to the grave.’	29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli capitasse una disgrazia, voi fareste scendere con dolore la mia canizie negli inferi”.
30 Therefore, if I would have gone to your servant, our father, with the boy not present, (though his life depends upon the life of him)	30 Ora, se io arrivassi dal tuo servo, mio padre, e il giovinetto non fosse con noi, poiché la vita dell’uno è legata alla vita dell’altro,
31 and if he were to see that he is not with us, he would die, and your servants will lead his grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.	31 non appena egli vedesse che il giovinetto non è con noi, morirebbe, e i tuoi servi avrebbero fatto scendere con dolore negli inferi la canizie del tuo servo, nostro padre.
32 Let me be your very own servant, for I accepted this one into my trust, and I promised, saying: ‘Unless I lead him back, I will be guilty of a sin against my father for all time.’	32 Ma il tuo servo si è reso garante del giovinetto presso mio padre dicendogli: “Se non te lo ricondurrò, sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita”.
33 And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.	33 Ora, lascia che il tuo servo rimanga al posto del giovinetto come schiavo del mio signore e il giovinetto torni lassù con i suoi fratelli!
34 For I cannot return to my father without the boy, lest I appear as a witness to the calamity that will oppress my father.”	34 Perché, come potrei tornare da mio padre senza avere con me il giovinetto? Che io non veda il male che colpirebbe mio padre!».
