Luke 23

1 The whole assembly then rose, and they brought him before Pilate.	1 E alzatasi tutta la loro numerosa adunanza, lo condussero a Pilato.
2 They began their accusation by saying, 'We found this man inciting our people to revolt, opposingpayment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king.'	2 Si misero allora ad accusarlo, dicendo: «Abbiamo trovato costui che sovvertiva la nostra nazione e proibiva di pagare i tributi a Cesare, e diceva di essere il Messia re».
3 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	3 Pilato lo interrogò: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?» Gli rispose Gesù: «Tu lo dici».
4 Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, 'I find no case against this man.'	4 Pilato, allora, disse ai gran sacerdoti e alle folle: «Non trovo nulla di colpevole in quest'uomo».
5 But they persisted, 'He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea and al the way fromGalilee, where he started, down to here.'	5 Ma quelli insistevano: «Solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dalla Galilea, dove ha cominciato, fino a qui».
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man were a Galilean;	6 Udito ciò, Pilato chiese se quell’uomo fosse galileo;
7 and finding that he came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed him over to Herod, who was also inJerusalem at that time.	7 e, saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò a Erode, che in quei giorni si trovava anch’egli a Gerusalemme.
8 Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a long time toset eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by him.	8 Erode, alla vista di Gesù si rallegrò molto, perché da gran tempo desiderava vederlo, per ciò che aveva sentito dire di lui, e sperava di vedergli fare qualche miracolo.
9 So he questioned him at some length, but without getting any reply.	9 Gli rivolgeva molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.
10 Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, vigorously pressing their accusations.	10 Intanto, i gran sacerdoti e gli scribi stavano lì ad accusarlo con veemenza.
11 Then Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put a richcloak on him and sent him back to Pilate.	11 Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo vilipese e lo burlò, vestendolo con una veste smagliante, e lo mandò a Pilato.
12 And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.	12 E quel giorno Erode e Pilato divennero amici; perché prima C’era inimicizia tra loro.
13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people.	13 Pilato, poi, convocati i gran sacerdoti, i notabili e il popolo,
14 He said to them, 'You brought this man before me as a popular agitator. Now I have gone into thematter myself in your presence and found no grounds in the man for any of the charges you bring against him.	14 disse loro: «Mi avete condotto quest'uomo come un sobillatore del popolo, ed ecco io, esaminandolo dinanzi a voi, non ho trovato in quest’uomo nessuna delle colpe di cui lo accusate.
15 Nor has Herod either, since he has sent him back to us. As you can see, the man has done nothingthat deserves death,	15 Ma neppure Erode: difatti, ce lo ha rimandato. Insomma, nulla è stato da lui commesso che sia degno di morte.
16 so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	16 Castigatolo, dunque, lo rilascerò».
17	17 Ora, in occasione della festa, Pilato era tenuto a rilasciare loro uno.
18 But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!'	18 Tutta la folla insieme gridò: «A morte costui! Rilasciaci Barabba!»
19 (This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)	19 il quale era stato messo in prigione per una rivolta avvenuta nella città e un omicidio.
20 In his desire to set Jesus free, Pilate addressed them again,	20 Pilato, avendo l’intenzione di liberare Gesù, parlò loro di nuovo.
21 but they shouted back, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'	21 Ma quelli continuavano a gridare:
22 And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no caseagainst him that deserves death, so I shal have him flogged and then let him go.'	22 «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!» E per la terza volta Pilato disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato in lui nulla che sia degno di morte; lo castigherò, dunque, e lo rilascerò».
23 But they kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And theirshouts kept growing louder.	23 Ma quelli insistevano nel chiedere con alte grida che fosse crocifisso; e le loro voci si facevano più forti.
24 Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.	24 Allora Pilato deliberò che fosse fatto ciò che chiedevano:
25 He released the man they asked for, who had been imprisoned because of rioting and murder, andhanded Jesus over to them to deal with as they pleased.	25 rilasciò quello che era in carcere per rivolta e omicidio, e che avevano richiesto, e consegnò Gesù alla loro volontà.
26 As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in fromthe country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.	26 Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirene che veniva dalla campagna, e lo caricarono della croce perché la portasse dietro a Gesù.
27 Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him.	27 Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che facevano cordoglio e lamento su di lui.
28 But Jesus turned to them and said, 'Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather foryourselves and for your children.	28 Ma, volgendosi ad esse, Gesù disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me; ma su voi stesse piangete e sui vostri figli,
29 For look, the days are surely coming when people wil say, "Blessed are those who are barren, thewombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!"	29 perché, ecco, verranno giorni in cui si dirà: “Beate le sterili e i grembi che non han generato e le mammelle che non hanno nutrito”.
30 Then they wil begin to say to the mountains, "Fal on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!"	30 Allora cominceranno a dire ai monti: “Cadete su di noi!” e alle colline:
31 For if this is what is done to green wood, what wil be done when the wood is dry?'	31 “Copriteci!” perché se si tratta così il legno verde, che ne sarà del secco?»
32 Now they were also leading out two others, criminals, to be executed with him.	32 Ed erano condotti anche altri due malfattori, per essere giustiziati con lui.
33 When they reached the place called The Skul , there they crucified him and the two criminals, one onhis right, the other on his left.	33 E, come vennero al luogo chiamato Cranio, quivi crocifissero lui e i malfattori, l’uno a destra e l’altro a sinistra.
34 Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.' Then they cast lots to shareout his clothing.	34 E Gesù diceva: «Padre, perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno». Dividendosi, poi, le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte.
35 The people stayed there watching. As for the leaders, they jeered at him with the words, 'He savedothers, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.'	35 E il popolo stava a guardare; e anche i notabili lo beffeggiavano dicendo: «Ha salvato altri, salvi se stesso se costui è il Messia, l’eletto di Dio!»
36 The soldiers mocked him too, coming up to him, offering him vinegar,	36 Anche i soldati lo deridevano: si avvicinavano, gli porgevano aceto e dicevano:
37 and saying, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'	37 «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei salva te stesso!»
38 Above him there was an inscription: 'This is the King of the Jews'.	38 C'era anche, sopra di lui, una scritta in caratteri greci, latini ed ebraici: «Questi è il re dei Giudei».
39 One of the criminals hanging there abused him: 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us aswel .'	39 Uno dei malfattori appesi lo insultava dicendo: «Non sei tu il Messia? Salva te stesso e noi!»
40 But the other spoke up and rebuked him. 'Have you no fear of God at al ?' he said. 'You got the samesentence as he did,	40 Ma l’altro lo rimproverava e diceva: «Neppure temi Dio, tu che subisci la stessa condanna?
41 but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.'	41 Per noi è giustizia, perché riceviamo quel che meritano le nostre azioni, ma costui non ha fatto nulla di male».
42 Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'	42 E diceva: «Gesù, ricordati di me quando verrai nella tua regale maestà».
43 He answered him, 'In truth I tel you, today you wil be with me in paradise.'	43 E Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico: oggi sarai con me nel paradiso».
44 It was now about the sixth hour and the sun's light failed, so that darkness came over the whole landuntil the ninth hour.	44 Era già circa l’ora sesta quando venne la tenebra su tutta la terra fino all’ora nona, essendosi il sole eclissato.
45 The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle.	45 E il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.
46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.' With these wordshe breathed his last.	46 E Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: «Padre, nelle tue mani rimetto lo spirito mio». Ciò detto, spirò.
47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, 'Truly, this was anupright man.'	47 Alla vista di ciò che era accaduto, il centurione glorificò Dio dicendo: «Realmente questo uomo era giusto!»
48 And when al the crowds who had gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened, they wenthome beating their breasts.	48 E tutte le folle accorse a quello spettacolo, alla vista di ciò che era accaduto, se ne ritornarono battendosi il petto.
49 All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee andsaw all this happen.	49 Tutti i conoscenti di Gesù stavano a distanza, come anche le donne che lo avevano accompagnato fin dalla Galilea, osservando queste cose.
50 And now a member of the Council arrived, a good and upright man named Joseph.	50 Ed ecco un uomo di nome Giuseppe, che era membro del Consiglio, uomo retto e giusto, —
51 He had not consented to what the others had planned and carried out. He came from Arimathaea, aJewish town, and he lived in the hope of seeing the kingdom of God.	51 costui non si era associato a ciò che gli altri avevano deliberato e fatto — nativo di Arimathea, città dei Giudei, che aspettava il regno di Dio.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Costui, presentatosi a Pilato, gli chiese il corpo di Gesù;
53 He then took it down, wrapped it in a shroud and put it in a tomb which was hewn in stone and whichhad never held a body.	53 lo calò giù, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo depose in un sepolcro tagliato nella roccia, nel quale nessuno ancora era stato deposto.
54 It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.	54 Era il giorno della Preparazione è sorgeva il sabato.
55 Meanwhile the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus were following behind. They took noteof the tomb and how the body had been laid.	55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea avevano seguito Giuseppe e osservarono il sepolcro e come era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù.
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath day they rested, as theLaw required.	56 Poi se ne tornarono e prepararono aromi ed unguenti, e nel giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo, secondo il precetto.
