1 [The Law, the Prophets,and the other writers succeeding them have passed on to us great lessons,inconsequence of which Israel must be commended for learning and wisdom. Furthermore, it is a duty, not only toacquire learning by reading,but also, once having acquired it, to make oneself of use to people outsideby whatone can say or write. My grandfather Jesus, having long devoted himself to the readingof the Law,theProphetsand other books of the Fathersand having become very learned in them,himself decided to writesomething on the subjects of learning and wisdom,so that people who wanted to learn might, by themselvesaccepting these disciplines,learn how better to live according to the Law.You are therefore askedto read thisbookwith good wil and attentionand to show indulgencein those places where, notwithstanding our efforts atinterpretation, we may seemto have failed to give an adequate rendering of this or that expression;the fact is thatthere is no equivalentfor things original y written in Hebrew when it is a question of translating them into anotherlanguage;what is more,the Law itself, the Prophetsand the other booksdiffer considerably in translation fromwhat appears in the original text. It was in the thirty-eighth year of the late King Euergetesthat, coming to Egyptand spending some time here,and finding life here consistent with a high degree of wisdom,I became convincedof an immediate duty to apply myself in my turn with pains and diligence to the translation of the book thatfol ows;and I spent much time and learning on itin the course of this period,to complete the work and to publishthe bookfor the benefit of those too who, domiciled abroad, wish to study,to reform their behaviour, and to live asthe Law requires.] All wisdom comes from the Lord, she is with him for ever.	1 Ogni sapienza dal Signore Iddio è, e con lui fu sempre, ed è dinanzi al secolo.
2 The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, the days of eternity -- who can count them?	2 Or chi annumeroe l'arena del mare e le gocciole della piova e li dì del secolo? Or chi misuroe l'altezza del cielo e l'ampiezza della terra e il profondo dello abisso?
3 The height of the sky, the breadth of the earth, the depth of the abyss -- who can explore them?	3 Or chi cercoe la sapienza di Dio, da cui procedono tutte le cose?
4 Wisdom was created before everything, prudent understanding subsists from remotest ages.	4 Prima di tutte le cose si è da lui creata la sapienza, e lo intelletto della prudenza dal secolo.
5	5 Fonte di sapienza si è la parola di Dio in excelsis, e li intramenti di colui sono li comandamenti eterni.
6 For whom has the root of wisdom ever been uncovered? Her resourceful ways, who knows them?	6 Or a cui è rivelata la radice della sapienza? chi conobbe il sapere suo?
7	7 Or a cui è rivelata e dimostrata la dottrina della sapienza? or chi comprese il multiplicamento del suo entramento?
8 One only is wise, terrible indeed,	8 Uno è l'altissimo (Dio) Creatore onnipotente, re potente e da essere temuto molto, sedente sopra la sedia della sapienza, e signoreggiante Iddio.
9 seated on his throne, the Lord. It was he who created, inspected and weighed her up, and then pouredher out on al his works-	9 Egli creò quella sapienza collo Spirito santo, e vidde e annumeroe e misuroe.
10 as much to each living creature as he chose -- bestowing her on those who love him.	10 E sparse quella sopra tutte l' opere sue, e sopra ogni carne; secondo il dato suo dà quella a coloro che lui amano.
11 The fear of the Lord is glory and pride, happiness and a crown of joyfulness.	11 Lo timor di Dio sì è gloria e glorianza e letizia e corona d' allegramento.
12 The fear of the Lord gladdens the heart, giving happiness, joy and long life.	12 Lo timore di Dio diletterae il cuore, e daralli letizia e gaudio nella lunghezza delli dì.
13 For those who fear the Lord, all wil end wel : on their dying day they wil be blessed.	13 A colui che temerà Iddio sarà bene nella fine, e nel dì della sua morte sarà benedetto.
14 The basis of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she was created with the faithful in their mothers' womb;	14 La dilettazione di Dio sì è onorabile sapienza.
15 she has made a home in the human race, an age -- old foundation, and to their descendants wil shefaithful y cling.	15 (A) coloro a cui ella apparisce in visione, amano quella nella visione, e nella cognizione delle sue maraviglie.
16 The ful ness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she intoxicates them with her fruits;	16 Il principio della sapienza sì è il timor di Dio, che colli (santi) fedeli insieme sì è creato nel ventre; e va colle elette femine, e cogli giusti e fedeli si conosce.
17 she fil s their entire house with treasures and their storerooms with her produce.	17 Il timore di Dio sì è la religiositade di scienza.
18 The crown of wisdom is to fear the Lord: she makes peace and health flourish.	18 La religiosità guarderae e giustificherae il cuore, e daragli giocondità e gaudio.
19 The Lord has seen and assessed her, he has showered down knowledge and intelligence, he hasexalted the renown of those who possess her.	19 Colui che temerae Iddio averà bene, e nelli dì della sua fine sarà benedetto.
20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and her branches are long life.	20 La plenitudine della sapienza si è nel timore di Dio, e la plenitudine procede dalli frutti di quello.
21	21 Empierà lui tutta la casa di figliuoli, e là dove egli si ricetta sì empierà delli suoi tesori.
22 The rage of the wicked cannot put him in the right, for the weight of his rage is his downfal .	22 La corona della sapienza sì è il timore di Dio, riempiuta di pace e di frutti di salute.
23 A patient person puts up with things until the right time comes: but his joy wil break out in the end.	23 E videla, e annumeroe quella; l'una e l'altra sono doni di Dio.
24 Til the time comes he keeps his thoughts to himself, and many a lip will affirm how wise he is.	24 La sapienza compartirà la scienza e lo intelletto della prudenza; ed esalta la gloria di coloro che la tengono.
25 Wisdom's treasuries contain the maxims of knowledge, the sinner, however, holds piety in abhorrence.	25 La radice della sapienza sì è temere Iddio; li rami suoi sono di lunga vita.
26 If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will bestow it on you.	26 Nelli tesori della sapienza sì è la religiositade dello intelletto e della scienza; una abbominazione è a' peccatori la sapienza.
27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction, and what pleases him is faithfulness and gentleness.	27 Lo timore di Dio caccia il peccato.
28 Do not stand out against fear of the Lord, do not practise it with a double heart.	28 Però chi è sanza il timore (di Dio) non potrà essere giustificato; la iracondia della animositade di colui è sovversione dello iracundo.
29 Do not act a part in public, keep watch over your lips.	29 Lo paziente sopporta insino al tempo; e poi a lui tornerae gioconditade.
30 Do not grow too high and mighty, for fear you fal and cover yourself in disgrace; for the Lord wouldthen reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole community for not having practised fear of the Lordand for having a heart ful of deceit.	30 Il buono senno asconderae infino al tempo le parole di colui; e (le lingue e) le labre di molti narreranno il senno di colui.
	31 La significazione della disciplina sì è nello tesauro della sapienza.
	32 L'adorare Iddio pare una maledizione al peccatore.
	33 O figliuolo, ama la sapienza e conserva la giustizia; e Iddio te la darae.
	34 Sapienza e disciplina è il timor di Dio; e quello che piace a colui,
	35 fede e mansuetudine; e adempierà li tesauri di colui.
	36 Non sii incredibile al timore di Dio; e non anderai a quello con doppio cuore.
	37 Non sarai ipocrito nel cospetto delli uomini; e non scandalizzare colle parole tue (gli uomini).
	38 Guàrdati da quelli (che hanno doppio cuore) acciò che tu non caggia e adduchi morte all' anima tua,
	39 e acciò che Iddio non riveli i tuoi secreti, e percuota te nel mezzo della sinagoga;
	40 per che tu andasti malignamente a Dio, e lo tuo cuore sì è pieno d'inganno e di fallacia.
