1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Rispose Elifaz Temanite e disse:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 Puossi l'uomo assomigliarsi a Dio, ancora quando perfetto sarae di scienza?
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Che fa pro' a Dio, se giusto sarai? ovvero che rapporti tu a lui, se immacolata sarà la tua vita?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 Or reprenderae te temendoti, e verrà teco nel giudicio,
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 e non per la tua grande malizia, e le infinite tue iniquitadi?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Certo tu hai tolto lo pegno delli tuoi fratelli senza cagione, e ignudi li spogliasti delle vestimenta.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 L'acqua al lasso (e fatigato) non dèsti, e all' affamato togliesti lo pane.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Nella fortezza del tuo braccio possedevi la terra, e potentissimo tenevi quella.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Le vedove lasciasti vote, e li bracci dei pupilli spezzasti.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Perciò intorniato sei di lacciuoli, e contùrbati la paura sùbita.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 E pensavi, che tu non vederesti le tenebre, e che tu non saresti oppremuto dallo impeto (delle onde) delle acque?
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 E non pensi che Iddio sta più alto del cielo, e soprastae all' altezza delle stelle?
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E dici: adunque che conobbe Iddio? E quasi per la scuritade giudica.
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 I nuvoli sono lo abitacolo suo secreto, e non considera le nostre cose, e intorno alle estremità del cielo va.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Or desideri tu di guardare la via delli secoli, la quale calcarono li malvagi uomini?
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 I quali sono tolti via innanzi al loro tempo, e lo fiume sovvertì lo loro fondamento;
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 i quali dicevano a Dio: pàrtiti da noi; e quasi come niuna cosa potesse fare l' Onnipotente, estimavano lui;
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 conciosia che egli avesse empiuto le case loro di beni la sentenza delli quali sia dalla lunga da me.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 Vedranno i giusti, e rallegrerannosi, e lo innocente se ne riderà di loro.
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 Or non è egli tagliata la superbia loro, e le reliquie loro non sono divorate dallo fuoco?
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Acconsenti adunque a lui, e abbiti pace; e per questo avrai li frutti ottimi.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 E ricevi dalla bocca di colui la legge, e poni le sue parole nel tuo cuore.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se ritornerai all' Onnipotente, sarai edificato; e sarà dalla lunga la iniquitade del tuo tabernacolo.
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 E darà per la terra pietra viva, e per pietra torrenti d'oro.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 E sarà l' Onnipotente contro alli tuoi nemici, e l'ariento raunerà a te.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Allora sopra l' Onnipotente abbonderai delle ricchezze, e leverai a Dio la tua faccia.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Pregherai lui, ed elli esaudirà te, e li tuoi voti renderai.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Dicerni le cose, e verrà a te, e nelle vie tue risplenderà lo lume.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 In verità colui che si umilierae, sarae nella gloria; e colui che chinerà gli occhii, quello sarae salvato.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Lo innocente sarae salvato, e sarà salvato [nel] la nettezza delle sue mani.
