NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
"Do not make false gods for yourselves. You shall not erect an idol or a sacred pillar for yourselves, nor shall you set up a stone figure for worship in your land; for I, the LORD, am your God.1 “ Non facietis vobis idolum et sculptile nec lapidem eri getis nec imaginem sculptam in petra ponetis in terra vestra, ut adoretis eam. Ego enim sum Dominus Deus vester.
Keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary. I am the LORD.2 Custodite sabbata mea et pavete sanctuarium meum. Ego Dominus.
"If you live in accordance with my precepts and are careful to observe my commandments,3 Si in praeceptis meis ambulaveritis et mandata mea custodieritis et feceritis ea,
I will give you rain in due season, so that the land will bear its crops, and the trees their fruit;4 dabo vobis pluvias temporibus suis, et terra gignet germen suum, et pomis arbores replebuntur.
your threshing will last till vintage time, and your vintage till the time for sowing, and you will have food to eat in abundance, so that you may dwell securely in your land.5 Apprehendet messium tritura vindemiam, et vindemia occupabit sementem; et comedetis panem vestrum in saturitatem et absque pavore habitabitis in terra vestra.
I will establish peace in the land, that you may lie down to rest without anxiety. I will rid the country of ravenous beasts, and keep the sword of war from sweeping across your land.6 Dabo pacem in finibus vestris, dormietis, et non erit qui exterreat. Auferam malas bestias, et gladius non transibit per terminos vestros.
You will rout your enemies and lay them low with your sword.7 Persequemini inimicos vestros, et corruent coram vobis gladio.
Five of you will put a hundred of your foes to flight, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand of them, till they are cut down by your sword.8 Persequentur quinque de vestris centum alienos, et centum ex vobis decem milia; cadent inimici vestri in conspectu vestro gladio.
I will look with favor upon you, and make you fruitful and numerous, as I carry out my covenant with you.9 Respiciam vos et crescere faciam; multiplicabimini, et firmabo pactum meum vobiscum.
So much of the old crops will you have stored up for food that you will have to discard them to make room for the new.10 Comedetis vetusta congregata priorum messium; et vetera, novis supervenientibus, proicietis.
I will set my Dwelling among you, and will not disdain you.11 Ponam habitaculum meum in medio vestri, et non abominabitur vos anima mea.
Ever present in your midst, I will be your God, and you will be my people;12 Ambulabo inter vos et ero vester Deus, vosque eritis populus meus.
for it is I, the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of the Egyptians and freed you from their slavery, breaking the yoke they had laid upon you and letting you walk erect.13 Ego Dominus Deus vester, qui eduxi vos de terra Aegyptiorum, ne serviretis eis, et qui confregi vectes iugi vestri, ut incederetis erecti.
"But if you do not heed me and do not keep all these commandments,14 Quod si non audieritis me nec feceritis omnia mandata haec,
if you reject my precepts and spurn my decrees, refusing to obey all my commandments and breaking my covenant,15 si spreveritis leges meas, et iudicia mea contempserit anima vestra, ut non faciatis omnia, quae a me constituta sunt, et ad irritum perducatis pactum meum,
then I, in turn, will give you your deserts. I will punish you with terrible woes--with wasting and fever to dim the eyes and sap the life. You will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will consume the crop.16 ego quoque haec faciam vobis: visitabo vos in terrore repentino, in tabe et ardore, qui conficiant oculos et consumant animam, frustra seretis sementem, quae ab hostibus devorabitur.
I will turn against you, till you are beaten down before your enemies and lorded over by your foes. You will take to flight though no one pursues you.17 Ponam faciem meam contra vos, et corruetis coram hostibus vestris et subiciemini his, qui oderunt vos, et fugietis, nemine persequente.
"If even after this you do not obey me, I will increase the chastisement for your sins sevenfold,18 Sin autem nec sic oboedieritis mihi, addam correptiones vestras septuplum propter peccata vestra
to break your haughty confidence. I will make the sky above you as hard as iron, and your soil as hard as bronze,19 et conteram superbiam duritiae vestrae. Daboque caelum vobis desuper sicut ferrum et terram aeneam.
so that your strength will be spent in vain; your land will bear no crops, and its trees no fruit.20 Consumetur incassum robur vestrum: non proferet terra germen, nec arbores poma praebebunt.
"If then you become defiant in your unwillingness to obey me, I will multiply my blows another sevenfold, as your sins deserve.21 Si ambulaveritis ex adverso mihi nec volueritis audire me, addam plagas vestras usque in septuplum propter peccata vestra;
I will unleash the wild beasts against you, to rob you of your children and wipe out your livestock, till your population dwindles away and your roads become deserted.22 emittamque in vos bestias agri, quae absque liberis vos faciant et deleant pecora vestra et ad paucitatem vos redigant, desertaeque fiant viae vestrae.
"If, with all this, you still refuse to be chastened by me and continue to defy me,23 Quod si nec sic volueritis recipere disciplinam, sed ambulaveritis ex adverso mihi,
I, too, will defy you and will smite you for your sins seven times harder than before.24 ego quoque contra vos adversus incedam et percutiam vos septies propter peccata vestra.
I will make the sword, the avenger of my covenant, sweep over you. Though you then huddle together in your walled cities, I will send in pestilence among you, till you are forced to surrender to the enemy.25 inducamque super vos gladium ultorem foederis mei; cumque confugeritis in urbes vestras, mittam pestilentiam in medio vestri, et trademini hostium manibus.
And as I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will need but one oven for baking all the bread they dole out to you in rations--not enough food to still your hunger.26 Postquam confregero vobis baculum panis, coquent decem mulieres in uno clibano panem vestrum et reddent eum ad pondus, et comedetis et non saturabimini.
"If, despite all this, you still persist in disobeying and defying me,27 Sin autem nec per haec audieritis me, sed ambulaveritis contra me,
I, also, will meet you with fiery defiance and will chastise you with sevenfold fiercer punishment for your sins,28 et ego incedam adversus vos in furore contrario; et corripiam vos septem plagis propter peccata vestra,
till you begin to eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.29 ita ut comedatis carnes filiorum et filiarum vestrarum.
I will demolish your high places, overthrow your incense stands, and cast your corpses on those of your idols. In my abhorrence of you,30 Destruam excelsa vestra et thymiamateria confringam et ponam cadavera vestra super cadavera idolorum vestrorum, et abominabitur vos anima mea,
I will lay waste your cities and devastate your sanctuaries, refusing to accept your sweet-smelling offerings.31 in tantum ut urbes vestras redigam in solitudinem et deserta faciam sanctuaria vestra nec recipiam ultra odorem suavissimum.
So devastated will I leave the land that your very enemies who come to live there will stand aghast at the sight of it.32 Disperdamque terram vestram; et stupebunt super ea inimici vestri, cum habitatores illius fuerint.
You yourselves I will scatter among the nations at the point of my drawn sword, leaving your countryside desolate and your cities deserted.33 Vos autem dispergam in gentes et evaginabo post vos gladium; eritque terra vestra deserta et civitates dirutae.
Then shall the land retrieve its lost sabbaths during all the time it lies waste, while you are in the land of your enemies; then shall the land have rest and make up for its sabbaths34 Tunc placebunt terrae sabbata sua cunctis diebus solitudinis suae; quando fueritis in terra hostili, sabbatizabit et sabbata sua supplebit.
during all the time that it lies desolate, enjoying the rest that you would not let it have on the sabbaths when you lived there.35 Cunctis diebus solitudinis sabbatizabit, eo quod non requieverit in sabbatis vestris, quando habitabatis in ea.
"Those of you who survive in the lands of their enemies I will make so fainthearted that, if leaves rustle behind them, they will flee headlong, as if from the sword, though no one pursues them;36 Et, qui de vobis remanserint, dabo pavorem in cordibus eorum in regionibus hostium; terrebit eos sonitus folii volantis, et ita fugient quasi gladium; cadent, nullo persequente.
stumbling over one another as if to escape a weapon, while no one is after them--so helpless will you be to take a stand against your foes!37 Et corruent singuli super fratres suos quasi bella fugientes, nemine persequente. Nemo vestrum inimicis audebit resistere.
You will be lost among the Gentiles, swallowed up in your enemies' country.38 Peribitis inter gentes, et hostilis vos terra consumet.
Those of you who survive in the lands of their enemies will waste away for their own and their fathers' guilt.39 Quod si et de vobis aliqui remanserint, tabescent in iniquitatibus suis in terris inimicorum vestrorum et propter peccata patrum suorum cum ipsis tabescent.
"Thus they will have to confess that they and their fathers were guilty of having rebelled against me and of having defied me,40 Et confitebuntur iniquitates suas et maiorum suorum, quibus praevaricati sunt in me et ambulaverunt ex adverso mihi,
so that I, too, had to defy them and bring them into their enemies' land. Then, when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they make amends for their guilt,41 ut et ego ambularem contra eos et inducerem illos in terram hostilem; vel tunc humiliabitur incircumcisum cor eorum, et tunc expiabunt pro impietatibus suis.
I will remember my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and my covenant with Abraham; and of the land, too, I will be mindful.42 Et recordabor foederis mei, quod pepigi cum Iacob et Isaac et Abraham. Terrae quoque memor ero,
But the land must first be rid of them, that in its desolation it may make up its lost sabbaths, and that they, too, may make good the debt of their guilt for having spurned my precepts and abhorred my statutes.43 quae, cum relicta fuerit ab eis, complacebit sibi in sabbatis suis patiens solitudinem propter illos. Ipsi vero expiabunt pro peccatis suis, eo quod abiecerint iudicia mea et leges meas despexerint.
Yet even so, even while they are in their enemies' land, I will not reject or spurn them, lest, by wiping them out, I make void my covenant with them; for I, the LORD, am their God.44 Et tamen, etiam cum essent in terra hostili, non penitus abieci eos neque sic despexi, ut consumerentur, et irritum facerem pactum meum cum eis. Ego enim sum Dominus, Deus eorum.
I will remember them because of the covenant I made with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt under the very eyes of the Gentiles, that I, the LORD, might be their God."45 Et recordabor eis foederis cum maioribus, quos eduxi de terra Aegypti in conspectu gentium, ut essem Deus eorum. Ego Dominus ”.
These are the precepts, decrees and laws which the LORD had Moses promulgate on Mount Sinai in the pact between himself and the Israelites.46 Haec sunt iudicia atque praecepta et leges, quas dedit Dominus inter se et inter filios Israel in monte Sinai per manum Moysi.
