Proverbs 15

NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
A mild answer calms wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.1 A mild answer turns away wrath, sharp words stir up anger.
The tongue of the wise pours out knowledge, but the mouth of fools spurts forth folly.2 The tongue of the wise makes knowledge welcome, the mouth of a fool spews fol y.
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.3 The eyes of Yahweh are everywhere: observing the wicked and the good.
A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse one crushes the spirit.4 The tongue that soothes is a tree of life; the perverse tongue, a breaker of hearts.
The fool spurns his father's admonition, but prudent is he who heeds reproof.5 Only a fool spurns a father's discipline, whoever accepts correction is discreet.
In the house of the just there are ample resources, but the earnings of the wicked are in turmoil.6 In the house of the upright there is no lack of treasure, the earnings of the wicked are fraught withanxiety.
The lips of the wise disseminate knowledge, but the heart of fools is perverted.7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge, not so the hearts of fools.
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.8 The sacrifice of the wicked is abhorrent to Yahweh, dear to him is the prayer of the honest.
The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but he loves the man who pursues virtue.9 The conduct of the wicked is abhorrent to Yahweh, but he loves the person whose goal is uprightness.
Severe punishment is in store for the man who goes astray; he who hates reproof will die.10 Correction is severe for one who leaves the way; whoever hates being reprimanded wil die.
The nether world and the abyss lie open before the LORD; how much more the hearts of men!11 Sheol and Perdition lie open to Yahweh; how much more the human heart!
The senseless man loves not to be reproved; to wise men he will not go.12 The mocker does not care to be reprimanded, and wil not choose the wise as companions.
A glad heart lights up the face, but by mental anguish the spirit is broken.13 Glad heart means happy face, where the heart is sad the spirit is broken.
The mind of the intelligent man seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on folly.14 The heart of the wise seeks knowledge, a fool's mouth feeds on fol y.
Every day is miserable for the depressed, but a lighthearted man has a continual feast.15 For the poor every day is evil, for the joyous heart it is always festival time.
Better a little with fear of the LORD than a great fortune with anxiety.16 Better to have little and with it fear of Yahweh than immense wealth and with it anxiety.
Better a dish of herbs where love is than a fatted ox and hatred with it.17 Better a dish of herbs when love is there than a fattened ox and hatred to go with it.
An ill-tempered man stirs up strife, but a patient man allays discord.18 The hot-headed provokes disputes, the equable al ays dissension.
The way of the sluggard is hemmed in as with thorns, but the path of the diligent is a highway.19 The way of the lazy is like a thorny hedge, the path of the honest is a broad highway.
A wise son makes his father glad, but a fool of a man despises his mother.20 A wise child is a father's joy; only a brute despises his mother.
Folly is joy to the senseless man, but the man of understanding goes the straight way.21 Fol y appeals to someone without sense, a person of understanding goes straight forward.
Plans fail when there is no counsel, but they succeed when counselors are many.22 Without deliberation plans come to nothing. Plans succeed where counsellors are many.
There is joy for a man in his utterance; a word in season, how good it is!23 Anyone who has a ready answer has joy too: how satisfying is the apt reply!
The path of life leads the prudent man upward, that he may avoid the nether world below.24 For the prudent, the path of life leads upwards thus avoiding Sheol below.
The LORD overturns the house of the proud, but he preserves intact the widow's landmark.25 Yahweh pulls down the house of the proud, but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact.
The wicked man's schemes are an abomination to the LORD, but the pure speak what is pleasing to him.26 Wicked scheming is abhorrent to Yahweh, but words that are kind are pure.
He who is greedy of gain brings ruin on his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.27 Craving for dishonest gain brings trouble on a house, hatred of bribery earns life.
The just man weighs well his utterance, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil.28 The heart of the upright reflects before answering, the mouth of the wicked spews out wickedness.
The LORD is far from the wicked, but the prayer of the just he hears.29 Yahweh keeps his distance from the wicked, but he listens to the prayers of the upright.
A cheerful glance brings joy to the heart; good news invigorates the bones.30 A kindly glance gives joy to the heart, good news lends strength to the bones.
He who listens to salutary reproof will abide among the wise.31 The ear attentive to wholesome correction finds itself at home in the company of the wise.
He who rejects admonition despises his own soul, but he who heeds reproof gains understanding.32 Whoever rejects correction lacks self-respect, whoever accepts reproof grows in understanding.
The fear of the LORD is training for wisdom, and humility goes before honors.33 The fear of Yahweh is a school of wisdom, before there can be glory, there must be humility.
