NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
"Give thanks to the LORD who is good, whose love endures forever!"1 Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Let that be the prayer of the LORD'S redeemed, those redeemed from the hand of the foe,2 Let them say so that have been redeemed by the Lord, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy: and gathered out of the countries.
Those gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.3 From the rising and the setting of the sun, from the north and from the sea.
Some had lost their way in a barren desert; found no path toward a city to live in.4 They wandered in a wilderness, in a place without water: they found not the way of a city for their habitation.
They were hungry and thirsty; their life was ebbing away.5 They were hungry and thirsty: their soul fainted in them.
In their distress they cried to the LORD, who rescued them in their peril,6 And they cried to the Lord in their tribulation: and he delivered them out of their distresses.
Guided them by a direct path so they reached a city to live in.7 And he led them into the right way: that they might go to a city of habitation.
Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.8 Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.
For he satisfied the thirsty, filled the hungry with good things.9 For he hath satisfied the empty soul, and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.
Some lived in darkness and gloom, in prison, bound with chains,10 Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: bound in want and in iron.
Because they rebelled against God's word, scorned the counsel of the Most High,11 Because they had exasperated the words of God: and provoked the counsel of the most High:
Who humbled their hearts through hardship; they stumbled with no one to help.12 And their heart was humbled with labours: they were weakened, and their was none to help them.
In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,13 Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.
Led them forth from darkness and gloom and broke their chains asunder.14 And he brought them out of darkness, and the shadow of death; and broke their bonds in sunder.
Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.15 Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.
For he broke down the gates of bronze and snapped the bars of iron.16 Because he hath broken gates of brass, and burst the iron bars.
Some fell sick from their wicked ways, afflicted because of their sins.17 He took them out of the way of their iniquity: for they were brought low for their injustices.
They loathed all manner of food; they were at the gates of death.18 Their soul abhorred all manner of meat: and they drew nigh even to the gates of death.
In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,19 And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.
Sent forth the word to heal them, snatched them from the grave.20 He sent his word, and healed them: and delivered them from their destructions.
Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.21 Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.
Let them offer a sacrifice in thanks, declare his works with shouts of joy.22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifice of praise: and declare his works with joy.
Some went off to sea in ships, plied their trade on the deep waters.23 They that go down to the sea in ships, doing business in the great waters:
They saw the works of the LORD, the wonders of God in the deep.24 These have seen the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
He spoke and roused a storm wind; it tossed the waves on high.25 He said the word, and there arose a storm of wind: and the waves thereof were lifted up.
They rose up to the heavens, sank to the depths; their hearts trembled at the danger.26 They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: their soul pined away with evils.
They reeled, staggered like drunkards; their skill was of no avail.27 They were troubled, and reeled like a drunken man; and all their wisdom was swallowed up.
In their distress they cried to the LORD, who brought them out of their peril,28 And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he brought them out of their distresses.
Hushed the storm to a murmur; the waves of the sea were stilled.29 And he turned the storm into a breeze: and its waves were still.
They rejoiced that the sea grew calm, that God brought them to the harbor they longed for.30 And they rejoiced because they were still: and he brought them to the haven which they wished for.
Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.31 Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.
Let them praise him in the assembly of the people, give thanks in the council of the elders.32 And let them exalt him in the church of the people: and praise him in the chair of the ancients.
God changed rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,33 He hath turned rivers into a wilderness: and the sources of water into dry ground:
Fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its people.34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
He changed the desert into pools of water, arid land into springs of water,35 He hath turned a wilderness into pools of water, and a dry land into water springs.
And settled the hungry there; they built a city to live in.36 And hath placed there the hungry; and they made a city for their habitation.
They sowed fields and planted vineyards, brought in an abundant harvest.37 And they sowed fields, and planted vineyards: and they yielded fruit of birth.
God blessed them, they became very many, and their livestock did not decrease.38 And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly: and their cattle he suffered not to decrease.
Where they were diminished and brought low through misery and cruel oppression,39 Then they were brought to be few: and they were afflicted through the trouble of evils and sorrow.
But he poured out contempt on princes, made them wander the trackless wastes,40 Contempt was poured forth upon their princes: and he caused them to wander where there was no passing, and out of the way.
While the poor were released from their affliction; their families increased like their flocks.41 And he helped the poor out of poverty: and made him families like a flock of sheep.
The upright saw this and rejoiced; all wickedness shut its mouth.42 The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop their mouth.
Whoever is wise will take note of these things, will ponder the merciful deeds of the LORD.43 Who is wise, and will keep these things: and will understand the mercies of the Lord?
