-1 Better is the poor who walks in his simplicity, than the rich who twists his lips and is unwise.
-2 Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good. And whoever hurries with his feet will stumble.
αφροσυνη ανδρος λυμαινεται τας οδους αυτου τον δε θεον αιτιαται τη καρδια αυτου3 The foolishness of a man undermines his steps. And then he seethes in his soul against God.
πλουτος προστιθησιν φιλους πολλους ο δε πτωχος και απο του υπαρχοντος φιλου λειπεται4 Riches adds many friends. But from the pauper, even those whom he had become separated.
μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ο δε εγκαλων αδικως ου διαφευξεται5 A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will not escape.
πολλοι θεραπευουσιν προσωπα βασιλεων πας δε ο κακος γινεται ονειδος ανδρι6 Many honor the character of one who is powerful, and there are friends for a giver of gifts.
πας ος αδελφον πτωχον μισει και φιλιας μακραν εσται εννοια αγαθη τοις ειδοσιν αυτην εγγιει ανηρ δε φρονιμος ευρησει αυτην ο πολλα κακοποιων τελεσιουργει κακιαν ος δε ερεθιζει λογους ου σωθησεται7 The brothers of the poor man hate him. Moreover, even his friends have withdrawn far from him. Whoever pursues only words shall have nothing.
ο κτωμενος φρονησιν αγαπα εαυτον ος δε φυλασσει φρονησιν ευρησει αγαθα8 But whoever possesses reason loves his own soul. And one who guards prudence shall discover good things.
μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ος δ' αν εκκαυση κακιαν απολειται υπ' αυτης9 A false witness shall not go unpunished. And whoever speaks lies will perish.
ου συμφερει αφρονι τρυφη και εαν οικετης αρξηται μεθ' υβρεως δυναστευειν10 Fine things are not fitting for the foolish, nor is it fitting for a servant to rule over princes.
ελεημων ανηρ μακροθυμει το δε καυχημα αυτου επερχεται παρανομοις11 The doctrine of a man is known through patience. And his glory is to pass beyond iniquities.
βασιλεως απειλη ομοια βρυγμω λεοντος ωσπερ δε δροσος επι χορτω ουτως το ιλαρον αυτου12 Like the roaring of a lion, so also is the wrath of a king. And his cheerfulness is like the dew upon the grass.
αισχυνη πατρι υιος αφρων και ουχ αγναι ευχαι απο μισθωματος εταιρας13 A foolish son is the grief of his father. And an argumentative wife is like a roof that is continually leaking.
οικον και υπαρξιν μεριζουσιν πατερες παισιν παρα δε θεου αρμοζεται γυνη ανδρι14 A house and its riches are given by parents. But a prudent wife is particularly from the Lord.
δειλια κατεχει ανδρογυναιον ψυχη δε αεργου πεινασει15 Laziness sends one into a deep sleep, and a dissolute soul will go hungry.
ος φυλασσει εντολην τηρει την εαυτου ψυχην ο δε καταφρονων των εαυτου οδων απολειται16 Whoever guards a commandment guards his own soul. But whoever neglects his own way will die.
δανιζει θεω ο ελεων πτωχον κατα δε το δομα αυτου ανταποδωσει αυτω17 Whoever is merciful to the poor lends to the Lord. And he will repay him for his efforts.
παιδευε υιον σου ουτως γαρ εσται ευελπις εις δε υβριν μη επαιρου τη ψυχη σου18 Teach your son; do not despair. But do not set your soul toward putting him to death.
κακοφρων ανηρ πολλα ζημιωθησεται εαν δε λοιμευηται και την ψυχην αυτου προσθησει19 Whoever is impatient will sustain damage. And when it has been taken away, he will set up another.
ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου ινα σοφος γενη επ' εσχατων σου20 Listen to counsel and take up discipline, so that you may be wise in your latter days.
πολλοι λογισμοι εν καρδια ανδρος η δε βουλη του κυριου εις τον αιωνα μενει21 There are many intentions in the heart of a man. But the will of the Lord shall stand firm.
καρπος ανδρι ελεημοσυνη κρεισσων δε πτωχος δικαιος η πλουσιος ψευστης22 An indigent man is merciful. And a pauper is better than a deceitful man.
φοβος κυριου εις ζωην ανδρι ο δε αφοβος αυλισθησεται εν τοποις ου ουκ επισκοπειται γνωσις23 The fear of the Lord is unto life. And he shall linger in plentitude, without being visited by disaster.
ο εγκρυπτων εις τον κολπον αυτου χειρας αδικως ουδε τω στοματι ου μη προσαγαγη αυτας24 The lazy conceals his hand under his arm, and he will not so much as bring it to his mouth.
λοιμου μαστιγουμενου αφρων πανουργοτερος γινεται εαν δε ελεγχης ανδρα φρονιμον νοησει αισθησιν25 When the pestilent are scourged, the foolish will become wiser. But if you chastise the wise, he will understand discipline.
ο ατιμαζων πατερα και απωθουμενος μητερα αυτου καταισχυνθησεται και επονειδιστος εσται26 Whoever afflicts his father and flees from his mother is disreputable and unhappy.
υιος απολειπομενος φυλαξαι παιδειαν πατρος μελετησει ρησεις κακας27 Son, do not cease listening to doctrine, and do not be ignorant of the sermons of knowledge.
ο εγγυωμενος παιδα αφρονα καθυβριζει δικαιωμα στομα δε ασεβων καταπιεται κρισεις28 An unjust witness ridicules judgment. And the mouth of the impious devours iniquity.
ετοιμαζονται ακολαστοις μαστιγες και τιμωριαι ωμοις αφρονων29 Judgments are prepared for those who ridicule. And striking hammers are prepared for the bodies of the foolish.
