Περι δε των ειδωλοθυτων, εξευρομεν οτι παντες εχομεν γνωσιν, η γνωσις ομως φυσιοι, η δε αγαπη οικοδομει.1 Now concerning those things that are sacrificed to idols: we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but charity builds up.
Και εαν τις νομιζη οτι εξευρει τι, δεν εμαθεν οτι ουδεν καθως πρεπει να μαθη?2 But if anyone considers himself to know anything, he does not yet know in the way that he ought to know.
αλλ' εαν τις αγαπα τον Θεον, ουτος γνωριζεται υπ' αυτου.3 For if anyone loves God, he is known by him.
Περι της βρωσεως λοιπον των ειδωλοθυτων, εξευρομεν οτι το ειδωλον ειναι ουδεν εν τω κοσμω, και οτι δεν υπαρχει ουδεις αλλος Θεος ειμη εις.4 But as to the foods that are immolated to idols, we know that an idol in the world is nothing, and that no one is God, except One.
Διοτι αν και ηναι λεγομενοι θεοι ειτε εν τω ουρανω ειτε επι της γης, καθως και ειναι θεοι πολλοι και κυριοι πολλοι,5 For although there are things that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, (if one even considers there to be many gods and many lords)
αλλ' εις ημας ειναι εις Θεος ο Πατηρ, εξ ου τα παντα και ημεις εις αυτον, και εις Κυριος Ιησους Χριστος, δι' ου τα παντα και ημεις δι' αυτου.6 yet we know that there is only one God, the Father, from whom all things are, and in whom we are, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things are, and by whom we are.
Αλλα δεν ειναι εις παντας η γνωσις αυτη? τινες δε δια την συνειδησιν του ειδωλου εως σημερον τρωγουσι το ειδωλοθυτον ως ειδωλοθυτον, και η συνειδησις αυτων ασθενης ουσα μολυνεται.7 But knowledge is not in everyone. For some persons, even now, with consent to an idol, eat what has been sacrificed to an idol. And their conscience, being infirm, becomes polluted.
το φαγητον ομως δεν συνιστα ημας εις τον Θεον? διοτι ουτε εαν φαγωμεν περισσευομεν, ουτε εαν δεν φαγωμεν ελαττουμεθα.8 Yet food does not commend us to God. For if we eat, we will not have more, and if we do not eat, we will not have less.
Πλην προσεχετε μηπως αυτη η εξουσια σας γεινη προσκομμα εις τους ασθενεις.9 But be careful not to let your liberty become a cause of sin to those who are weak.
Διοτι εαν τις ιδη σε, τον εχοντα γνωσιν, οτι καθησαι εις τραπεζαν εντος ναου ειδωλων, δεν θελει ενθαρρυνθη η συνειδησις αυτου, ασθενουντος, εις το να τρωγη τα ειδωλοθυτα;10 For if anyone sees someone with knowledge sitting down to eat in idolatry, will not his own conscience, being infirm, be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols?
Και δια την γνωσιν σου θελει απολεσθη ο ασθενης αδελφος, δια τον οποιον ο Χριστος απεθανεν.11 And should an infirm brother perish by your knowledge, even though Christ died for him?
Αμαρτανοντες δε ουτως εις τους αδελφους και προσβαλλοντες την ασθενη συνειδησιν αυτων, εις τον Χριστον αμαρτανετε.12 So when you sin in this way against the brothers, and you harm their weakened conscience, then you sin against Christ.
Δια τουτο, εαν το φαγητον σκανδαλιζη τον αδελφον μου, δεν θελω φαγει κρεας εις τον αιωνα, δια να μη σκανδαλισω τον αδελφον μου.13 Because of this, if food leads my brother to sin, I will never eat meat, lest I lead my brother to sin.
