1 Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.	1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .
2 (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)	2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.
3 His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.	3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'
4 And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.	4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.	5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.	6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days
7 Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.	7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'
8 The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?	8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'
9 Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:	9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;
10 But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.	10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.
11 These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.	11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'
12 His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.	12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'
13 But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.	13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';
14 Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.	14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;
15 And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.	15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.	16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'
17 Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.	17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
18 (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)	18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,
19 And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.	19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.	20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.
21 Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,
22 But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.	22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'
23 Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.	23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'
24 Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.	24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'
25 Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:	25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,
26 And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?	26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?
27 She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.	27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'
28 And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.	28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'
29 She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.	29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.
30 For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.	30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31 The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.	31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'
33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,	33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,
34 And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.	34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'
35 And Jesus wept.	35 Jesus wept;
36 The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.	36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'
37 But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?	37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.	38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.
39 Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.	39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'
40 Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?	40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'
41 They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.	41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.	42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.
43 When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.	43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44 And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.	44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'
45 Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.	45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.	46 but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.
47 The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?	47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?
48 If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.	48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'
49 But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.	49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;
50 Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.	50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'
51 And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.	51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-
52 And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.	52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.
53 From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.	53 From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.
54 Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.	54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.
55 And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.	55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves
56 They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.	56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'
	57 The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
