DOUAI-RHEIMSJERUSALEM
Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:1 Cophar de Naamat prit la parole et dit:
Therefore various thoughts succeed one another in me, and my mind is hurried away to different things.2 Aussi mes pensées s'agitent pour répondre, de là cette impatience qui me possède.
The doctrine with which thou reprovest me, I will hear, and the spirit of my understanding shall answer for me.3 J'ai subi une leçon qui m'outrage, mais mon esprit me souffle la réponse.
This I know from the beginning, since man was placed upon the earth,4 Ne sais-tu pas que, de tout temps, depuis que l'homme fut mis sur terre,
that the praise of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment.5 l'allégresse du méchant est brève et la joie de l'impie ne dure qu'un instant.
If his pride mount up even to heaven, and his head touch the clouds:6 Même si sa taille s'élevait jusqu'aux cieux, si sa tête touchait la nue,
In the end he shall be destroyed like a dunghill, and they that has seen him shall say: Where is he?7 comme un fantôme il disparaît à jamais, et ceux qui le voyaient disent: "Où est-il?"
As a dream that fleeth away he shall not be found, he shall pass as a vision of the night:8 Il s'envole comme un songe insaisissable, il s'enfuit comme une vision nocturne.
The eyes that had seen him, shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more behold him.9 L'oeil habitué à sa vue ne l'aperçoit plus, à sa demeure il devient invisible.
His children shall be oppressed with want, and his hands shall render him his sorrow.10 Ses fils devront indemniser les pauvres, ses enfants restituer ses richesses.
His bones shall be filled with the vices of his youth, and they shall sleep with him in the dust.11 Ses os étaient pleins d'une vigueur juvénile: la voilà étendue avec lui dans la poussière.
For when evil shall be sweet in his mouth, he will hide it under his tongue.12 Le mal était doux à sa bouche: il l'abritait sous sa langue,
He will spare it, and not leave it, and will hide it in his throat.13 il le gardait soigneusement, le retenait au milieu du palais.
His bread in his belly shall be turned into the gall of asps within him.14 Cet aliment dans ses entrailles se corrompt, devient au-dedans du fiel d'aspic.
The riches which he hath swallowed; he shall vomit up, and God shall draw them out of his belly.15 Il doit vomir les richesses englouties, et Dieu lui fait rendre gorge.
He shall suck the head of asps, and the viper's tongue shall kill him.16 Il suçait du venin d'aspic: la langue de la vipère le tue.
(Let him not see the streams of the river, the brooks of honey and of butter.)17 Il ne connaîtra plus les ruisseaux d'huile, les torrents de miel et de laitage.
He shall be punished for all that he did, and yet shall not be consumed: according to the multitude of his devices so also shall he suffer.18 Il perdra sa mine réjouie en restituant ses gains, cet air satisfait du temps où les affaires prospéraient.
Because he broke in and stripped the poor: he hath violently taken away a house which he did not build.19 Parce qu'il a détruit les cabanes des pauvres, volé des maisons au lieu d'en bâtir,
And yet his belly was not filled: and when he hath the things he coveted, he shall not be able to possess them.20 parce que son appétit s'est montré insatiable, ses trésors ne le sauveront pas,
There was nothing left of his meat, and therefore nothing shall continue of his goods:21 parce que nul n'échappait à sa voracité, sa prospérité ne durera pas.
When he shall be filled, he shall be straitened, he shall burn, and every sorrow shall fall upon him.22 En pleine abondance, l'angoisse le saisira, la misère, de toute sa force, fondra sur lui,
May his belly be filled, that God may send forth the wrath of his indignation upon him, and rain down his war upon him.23 Dieu lâche sur lui l'ardeur de sa colère, lance contre sa chair une pluie de traits.
He shall flee from weapons of iron, and shall fall upon a bow of brass.24 S'il fuit devant l'arme de fer, l'arc de bronze le transperce.
The sword is drawn out, and cometh forth from its scabbard, and glittereth in his bitterness: the terrible ones shall go and come upon him.25 Une flèche sort de son dos, une pointe étincelante de son foie. Les terreurs s'avancent contre lui,
All darkness is hid in his secret places: a fire that is not kindled shall devour him, he shall be afflicted when left in his tabernacle.26 toutes les ténèbres cachées sont là pour l'enlever. Un feu qu'on n'allume pas le dévore et consume cequi reste sous sa tente.
The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.27 Les cieux dévoilent son iniquité, et la terre se dresse contre lui.
The offspring of his house shall be exposed, he shall be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.28 Le revenu de sa maison s'écoule, comme des torrents, au jour de la colère.
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the inheritance of his doings from the Lord.29 Tel est le sort que Dieu réserve au méchant, l'héritage qu'il assigne au maudit.
