| 1 Ietro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, venne a sapere quanto Dio aveva operato per Mosè e per Israele, suo popolo, come il Signore aveva fatto uscire Israele dall'Egitto. | 1 Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt. |
| 2 Allora Ietro prese con sé Zippora, moglie di Mosè, che prima egli aveva rimandata, | 2 Now Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, had taken Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away, |
| 3 e insieme i due figli di lei, uno dei quali si chiamava Gherson, perché egli aveva detto: "Sono un emigrato in terra straniera", | 3 and her two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom (for he said, "I have been a sojourner in a foreign land"), |
| 4 e l'altro si chiamava Eliezer, perché "Il Dio di mio padre è venuto in mio aiuto e mi ha liberato dalla spada del faraone". | 4 and the name of the other, Eliezer (for he said, "The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh"). |
| 5 Ietro dunque, suocero di Mosè, con i figli e la moglie di lui venne da Mosè nel deserto, dove era accampato, presso la montagna di Dio. | 5 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness where he was encamped at the mountain of God. |
| 6 Egli fece dire a Mosè: "Sono io, Ietro, tuo suocero, che vengo da te con tua moglie e i suoi due figli!". | 6 And when one told Moses, "Lo, your father-in-law Jethro is coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her," |
| 7 Mosè andò incontro al suocero, si prostrò davanti a lui e lo baciò; poi si informarono l'uno della salute dell'altro ed entrarono sotto la tenda. | 7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare, and went into the tent. |
| 8 Mosè raccontò al suocero quanto il Signore aveva fatto al faraone e agli Egiziani per Israele, tutte le difficoltà loro capitate durante il viaggio, dalle quali il Signore li aveva liberati. | 8 Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the LORD had delivered them. |
| 9 Ietro gioì di tutti i benefici che il Signore aveva fatti a Israele, quando lo aveva liberato dalla mano degli Egiziani. | 9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the good which the LORD had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. |
| 10 Disse Ietro: "Benedetto sia il Signore, che vi ha liberati dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano del faraone: egli ha strappato questo popolo dalla mano dell'Egitto! | 10 And Jethro said, "Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh. |
| 11 Ora io so che il Signore è più grande di tutti gli dèi, poiché egli ha operato contro gli Egiziani con quelle stesse cose di cui essi si vantavano". | 11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods, because he delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians, when they dealt arrogantly with them." |
12 Poi Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì un olocausto e sacrifici a Dio. Vennero Aronne e tutti gli anziani d'Israele e fecero un banchetto con il suocero di Mosè davanti a Dio.
| 12 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, offered a burnt offering and sacrifices to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God. |
| 13 Il giorno dopo Mosè sedette a render giustizia al popolo e il popolo si trattenne presso Mosè dalla mattina fino alla sera. | 13 On the morrow Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from morning till evening. |
| 14 Allora Ietro, visto quanto faceva per il popolo, gli disse: "Che cos'è questo che fai per il popolo? Perché siedi tu solo, mentre il popolo sta presso di te dalla mattina alla sera?". | 14 When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand about you from morning till evening?" |
| 15 Mosè rispose al suocero: "Perché il popolo viene da me per consultare Dio. | 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God; |
| 16 Quando hanno qualche questione, vengono da me e io giudico le vertenze tra l'uno e l'altro e faccio conoscere i decreti di Dio e le sue leggi". | 16 when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God and his decisions." |
| 17 Il suocero di Mosè gli disse: "Non va bene quello che fai! | 17 Moses' father-in-law said to him, "What you are doing is not good. |
| 18 Finirai per soccombere, tu e il popolo che è con te, perché il compito è troppo pesante per te; tu non puoi attendervi da solo. | 18 You and the people with you will wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it alone. |
| 19 Ora ascoltami: ti voglio dare un consiglio e Dio sia con te! Tu sta' davanti a Dio in nome del popolo e presenta le questioni a Dio. | 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God, and bring their cases to God; |
| 20 A loro spiegherai i decreti e le leggi; indicherai loro la via per la quale devono camminare e le opere che devono compiere. | 20 and you shall teach them the statutes and the decisions, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. |
| 21 Invece sceglierai tra tutto il popolo uomini integri che temono Dio, uomini retti che odiano la venalità e li costituirai sopra di loro come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine. | 21 Moreover choose able men from all the people, such as fear God, men who are trustworthy and who hate a bribe; and place such men over the people as rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. |
| 22 Essi dovranno giudicare il popolo in ogni circostanza; quando vi sarà una questione importante, la sottoporranno a te, mentre essi giudicheranno ogni affare minore. Così ti alleggerirai il peso ed essi lo porteranno con te. | 22 And let them judge the people at all times; every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves; so it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. |
23 Se tu fai questa cosa e se Dio te la comanda, potrai resistere e anche questo popolo arriverà in pace alla sua mèta".
| 23 If you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace." |
| 24 Mosè ascoltò la voce del suocero e fece quanto gli aveva suggerito. | 24 So Moses gave heed to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. |
| 25 Mosè dunque scelse uomini capaci in tutto Israele e li costituì alla testa del popolo come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine. | 25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. |
| 26 Essi giudicavano il popolo in ogni circostanza: quando avevano affari difficili li sottoponevano a Mosè, ma giudicavano essi stessi tutti gli affari minori. | 26 And they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves. |
| 27 Poi Mosè congedò il suocero, il quale tornò al suo paese. | 27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way to his own country. |
