1 Todo amigo dice: «También yo soy tu amigo», pero hay amigos que lo son sólo de nombre.	1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.
2 ¿No entristece acaso hasta la muerte ver a un amigo querido transformarse en enemigo?	2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?
3 ¡Perversa inclinación! ¿De dónde te han hecho rodar para cubrir la tierra de falsedad?	3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"
4 ¡Un compañero comparte las alegrías del amigo y en el momento de la aflicción, se vuelve contra él!	4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.
5 ¡Otro sufre con el amigo para llenarse su vientre, y a la hora del combate, empuña el escudo!	5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.
6 Nunca te olvides de un buen amigo, y acuérdate de él cuando tengas riquezas.	6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.
7 Todo el que aconseja recomienda su consejo, pero hay quien aconseja pensando sólo en sí mismo.	7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;
8 Sé precavido con el que da consejos y averigua primero qué le hace falta, porque entonces aconsejará lo que le convenga a él; no sea que le dé lo mismo una cosa que otra	8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?
9 y te diga: «Vas por el buen camino», mientras se pone enfrente a ver qué te pasa.	9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.
10 No consultes al que te subestima, y al que tiene celos de ti, ocúltale tus designios.	10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.
11 No pidas consejo a una mujer sobre su rival, ni a un cobarde sobre la guerra, ni a un comerciante sobre un negocio, ni a un comprador sobre una venta, ni a un envidiosos sobre la gratitud, ni a un despiadado sobre un beneficio, ni a un perezoso sobre cualquier trabajo, ni al que trabaja por horas sobre la conclusión de una obra, ni a un servidor holgazán sobre un trabajo difícil: no cuentes con estos para ningún consejo.	11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.
12 Pero recurre asiduamente a un hombre piadoso, de quien te consta que cumple los mandamientos, capaz de sentir lo que tú mismo sientes, y que sufrirá contigo si das un traspié.	12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.
13 Déjate llevar por lo que te dicta el corazón, porque nadie te será más fiel que él:	13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?
14 el alma de un hombre suele advertir a menudo mejor que siete vigías apostados sobre una altura.	14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.
15 Y por encima de todo ruego al Altísimo, para que dirija tus pasos en la verdad.	15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.
16 Principio de toda obra es la conversación, y antes de toda acción, está el consejo.	16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.
17 Raíz de los pensamientos es el corazón, y él hace brotar cuatro ramas:	17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:
18 el bien y el mal, la vida y la muerte, y la que decide siempre en todo esto es la lengua.	18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.
19 Un hombre puede ser hábil para instruir a muchos y, sin embargo, ser inútil para sí mismo.	19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.
20 El que es sabio de labios para afuera, se hace odioso y acabará sin tener qué comer:	20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.
21 no se le ha concedido el favor del Señor, porque estaba desprovisto de toda sabiduría.	21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;
22 Si un hombre es sabio para sí mismo, los frutos de su inteligencia están en su boca y son dignos de fe.	22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:
23 Un hombre sabio instruye a su propio pueblo y los frutos de su inteligencia son dignos de fe.	23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.
24 Un hombre sabio es colmado de bendiciones y, al verlo, todos lo felicitan.	24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;
25 El hombre tiene sus días contados, pero los días de Israel son incontables.	25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.
26 Un hombre sabio se gana la confianza de su pueblo y su nombre sobrevive para siempre.	26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;
27 Hijo mío, para tu régimen de comida, pruébate a ti mismo: mira qué te hace mal y prívate de ello.	27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.
28 Porque no todo es conveniente para todos ni a todos les gusta lo mismo.	28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,
29 No seas insaciable de placeres ni te excedas en las comidas.	29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.
30 Porque el exceso en las comidas acarrea enfermedades y la glotonería provoca cólicos.	30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.
31 La glotonería causó la muerte de muchos, pero el que se cuida prolongará su vida.
