1 Sí, vanos por naturaleza son todos los hombres que han ignorado a Dios, los que, a partir de las cosas visibles, no fueron capaces de conocer a «Aquel que es»., al considerar sus obras, no reconocieron al Artífice.	1 For all men who were ignorant of God were foolish by nature; and they were unable from the good things that are seen to know him who exists, nor did they recognize the craftsman while paying heed to his works;
2 En cambio, tomaron por dioses rectores del universo al fuego, al viento, al aire sutil, a la bóveda estrellada, al agua impetuosa o a los astros luminosos del cielo.	2 but they supposed that either fire or wind or swift air, or the circle of the stars, or turbulent water, of the luminaries of heaven were the gods that rule the world.
3 Ahora bien, si fascinados por la hermosura de estas cosas, ellos las consideraron como dioses, piensen cuánto más excelente es el Señor de todas ellas, ya que el mismo Autor de la belleza es el que las creó.	3 If through delight in the beauty of these things men assumed them to be gods, let them know how much better than these is their Lord, for the author of beauty created them.
4 Y si quedaron impresionados por su poder y energía, comprendan, a partir de ellas, cuánto más poderoso es el que las formó.	4 And if men were amazed at their power and working, let them perceive from them how much more powerful is he who formed them.
5 Porque, a partir de la grandeza y hermosura de las cosas, si llega, por analogía, a contemplar a su Autor,	5 For from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator.
6 Sin embargo, estos hombres no merecen una grave reprensión, porque tal vez se extravían buscando a Dios y queriendo encontrarlo;	6 Yet these men are little to be blamed, for perhaps they go astray while seeking God and desiring to find him.
7 como viven ocupándose de sus obras, las investigan y se dejan seducir por lo que ven: ¡tan bello es el espectáculo del mundo!	7 For as they live among his works they keep searching, and they trust in what they see, because the things that are seen are beautiful.
8 Pero ni aún así son excusables:	8 Yet again, not even they are to be excused;
9 si han sido capaces de adquirir tanta ciencia para escrutar el curso del mundo entero, ¿cómo no encontraron más rápidamente al Señor de todo?	9 for if they had the power to know so much that they could investigate the world, how did they fail to find sooner the Lord of these things?
10 ¡Desgraciados, porque han puesto su esperanza en cosas muertas, los que llamaron dioses a obras fabricadas por las manos del hombre, al oro y la plata trabajados con arte, a figuras de animales, o a una piedra sin valor esculpida por una mano antigua!	10 But miserable, with their hopes set on dead things, are the men who give the name "gods" to the works of men's hands, gold and silver fashioned with skill, and likenesses of animals, or a useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.
11 Tomemos por ejemplo un leñador: él derriba con la sierra un árbol fácil de voltear, le quita hábilmente toda la corteza, lo trabaja con maestría y hace con él un objeto útil para el uso común.	11 A skilled woodcutter may saw down a tree easy to handle and skilfully strip off all its bark, and then with pleasing workmanship make a useful vessel that serves life's needs,
12 Con las astillas que sobran calienta su comida y sacia su apetito.	12 and burn the castoff pieces of his work to prepare his food, and eat his fill.
13 Pero queda todavía un resto que no sirve para nada, un tronco retorcido y lleno de nudos: él lo toma, lo esculpe para llenar sus ratos de ocio, lo talla con habilidad en sus momentos libres, y le da forma humana	13 But a castoff piece from among them, useful for nothing, a stick crooked and full of knots, he takes and carves with care in his leisure, and shapes it with skill gained in idleness; he forms it like the image of a man,
14 o lo hace semejante a un vil animal. Después, lo recubre de minio, colorea la superficie de rojo, y disimula todos sus efectos con un enduido;	14 or makes it like some worthless animal, giving it a coat of red paint and coloring its surface red and covering every blemish in it with paint;
15 le prepara un sitio adecuado, lo coloca en la pared y lo asegura con un clavo.	15 then he makes for it a niche that befits it, and sets it in the wall, and fastens it there with iron.
16 De esa manera, toma precauciones para que no se caiga, sabiendo que no puede valerse por sí mismo, porque no es más que una imagen y tiene necesidad de ayuda.	16 So he takes thought for it, that it may not fall, because he knows that it cannot help itself, for it is only an image and has need of help.
17 Sin embargo, cuando ruega por sus bienes, por su hogar o sus hijos, no se avergüenza de dirigir la palabra a ese objeto sin vida: ¡reclama salud a un inválido,	17 When he prays about possessions and his marriage and children, he is not ashamed to address a lifeless thing.
18 implora vida a un muerto, pide socorro al más inexperto; al emprender un viaje, ruega al que es incapaz de dar un paso;	18 For health he appeals to a thing that is weak; for life he prays to a thing that is dead; for aid he entreats a thing that is utterly inexperienced; for a prosperous journey, a thing that cannot take a step;
19 para sus ganancias, sus empresas y el éxito de sus trabajos, pide vigor al que no tiene en sus manos ningún vigor!	19 for money-making and work and success with his hands he asks strength of a thing whose hands have no strength.
