BIBLES DES PEUPLES	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En apprenant ce qui s’était passé, ceux qui étaient dans les tentes ne savaient plus que penser.	1 When the men who were stil in their tents heard the news they were appal ed.
2 La peur, la terreur, fondirent sur eux, et ils commencèrent à se disperser sans plus se préoccuper les uns des autres, prenant la fuite par tous les chemins de la plaine et de la montagne.	2 Panic-stricken and trembling, no two of them could keep together, the rout was complete, with oneaccord they fled along every track across the plain or through the mountains.
3 Ceux qui campaient sur les montagnes autour de Béthulie prirent la fuite eux aussi. Alors les Israélites, tous ceux qui étaient en état de se battre, fondirent sur eux.	3 The men who had been bivouacking in the mountains round Bethulia were fleeing too. Then al theIsraelite warriors charged down on them.
4 Osias fit porter des messages à Bétomestaïm, à Bèbé, à Chobé, à Kola, dans tout le territoire d’Israël, pour faire savoir ce qui s’était passé et inviter tout le monde à se jeter sur les ennemis et à les anéantir.	4 Uzziah sent messengers to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Choba, Kola, throughout the whole territory of Israel,to inform them of what had happened and to urge them al to hurl themselves on the enemy and annihilate them.
5 À peine avertis, les hommes d’Israël tombèrent sur tous ceux qui fuyaient et ils les frappèrent jusqu’à Choba. Ceux de Jérusalem et de toute la montagne se joignirent à eux car ils avaient appris eux aussi ce qui était arrivé dans le camp ennemi. Puis ce fut le tour des gens de Galaad et de Galilée qui les prirent sur le côté et les frappèrent sévèrement jusqu’à proximité de Damas et de sa région.	5 As soon as the Israelites heard the news, they fel on them as one man and massacred them al theway to Choba. The men of Jerusalem and the entire mountain country also ral ied to them, once they had beeninformed of the events in the enemy camp. Then the men of Gilead and Galilee attacked them on the flank andstruck at them fiercely till they neared Damascus and its territory.
6 Quant aux gens qui étaient restés à Béthulie, ils se jetèrent sur le camp des Assyriens; ils le pillèrent et ramassèrent un énorme butin.	6 Al the other inhabitants of Bethulia fel on the Assyrian camp and looted it to their great profit.
7 Les Israélites qui revenaient du massacre se servirent avec ce qui restait. Les gens des bourgs et des villages de la montagne et de la plaine eurent aussi leur part de butin puisqu’il y en avait partout.	7 The Israelites returning from the slaughter seized what was left. The hamlets and vil ages of themountain country and the plain also captured a great deal of booty, since there were vast stores of it.
8 Le grand prêtre Yoakim et tout le conseil des anciens d’Israël qui étaient à Jérusalem, vinrent pour voir de plus près les bienfaits dont le Seigneur avait comblé Israël, pour voir Judith et pour la saluer.	8 Joakim the high priest and the entire Council of Elders of Israel, who were in Jerusalem, came to gazeon the benefits that the Lord had lavished on Israel and to see Judith and congratulate her.
9 En entrant chez elle, tous la bénissaient d’une seule voix: “Tu es la gloire de Jérusalem! Tu es la joie et l’orgueil d’Israël! Tu es le grand honneur de notre race!	9 On coming to her house, they blessed her with one accord, saying: You are the glory of Jerusalem!You are the great pride of Israel! You are the highest honour of our race!
10 “C’est une grande chose que tu as faite, tu as bien mérité d’Israël, car Dieu était avec toi en tout ce que tu as fait. Que le Seigneur tout-puissant te bénisse pour les siècles!” Tout le peuple reprenait: “Amen!”	10 By doing all this with your own hand you have deserved wel of Israel, and God has approved whatyou have done. May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty in al the days to come! And the people al said,'Amen!'
11 La population pilla le camp durant 30 jours; on donna à Judith la tente d’Holoferne et toute sa vaisselle d’argent, sa literie, ses bassins et tous ses meubles. Elle le prit, elle en chargea sa mule, attela ses chariots, et rassembla le tout.	11 The people looted the camp for thirty days. They gave Judith the tent of Holofernes, al his silver plate,his divans, his drinking bowls and all his furniture. She took this, loaded her mule, harnessed her carts andheaped the things into them.
12 Toutes les femmes d’Israël sortirent pour la voir, elles la bénissaient et beaucoup d’entre elles firent un chœur en son honneur. Judith prit des branchages et les donna aux femmes qui étaient avec elle.	12 Al the women of Israel, hurrying to see her, formed choirs of dancers in her honour. Judith tookwands of vine-leaves in her hand and distributed them to the women who accompanied her;
13 Elles se firent des couronnes d’olivier, elle et ses compagnes, puis elle prit la tête du cortège, conduisant le chœur des femmes; tous les hommes d’Israël suivaient, armés et couronnés, chantant des cantiques à pleine voix.	13 she and her companions put on wreaths of olive. Then she took her place at the head of theprocession and led the women as they danced. Al the men of Israel, armed and garlanded, followed them,singing hymns.
14 Alors Judith entonna cette action de grâces devant tout Israël, et tout le peuple reprit son cantique:	14 With all Israel round her, Judith broke into this song of thanksgiving and the whole people sang thishymn:
