1 Alors le roi se troubla, il monta à la chambre haute de la porte et se mit à pleurer. Tout en marchant il parlait ainsi: “Mon fils Absalom! Mon fils! Mon fils Absalom! Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort à ta place? Absalom, mon fils! Mon fils!”	1 And it was told Joab, that the king wept and mourned for his son:
2 On le dit à Joab: “Le roi pleure et se lamente sur Absalom.”	2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day: The king grieveth for his son.
3 Ce jour-là la victoire se changea en deuil pour tout le peuple, car tout le peuple apprit que le roi était désespéré à cause de son fils.	3 And the people shunned the going into the city that day as a people would do that hath turned their backs, and fled away from the battle.
4 C’est pourquoi ce jour-là le peuple rentra sans bruit dans la ville, comme des gens qui ont fui pendant la bataille et qui rentrent tout honteux sans se faire remarquer.	4 And the king covered his head, and cried with a loud voice: O my son Absalom, O Absalom my son, O my son.
5 Le roi, lui, s’était voilé la face et il criait à haute voix: “Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils! Mon fils!”	5 Then Joab going into the house to the king, said: Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, that have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons, and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines.
6 Joab entra dans la chambre du roi et lui dit: “Aujourd’hui tu couvres de honte tous tes serviteurs. Ils t’ont sauvé la vie, la vie des tes fils et de tes filles, la vie de tes femmes et de tes concubines.	6 Thou lovest them that hate thee, and thou hatest them that love thee: and thou hast shewn this day that thou carest not for thy nobles, nor for thy servants: and I now plainly perceive that if Absalom had lived, and all we had been slain, then it would have pleased thee.
7 Mais tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et tu hais ceux qui t’aiment. Tu le montres bien aujourd’hui: tes serviteurs et leurs chefs ne sont rien pour toi et si aujourd’hui Absalom était en vie, et que tous nous soyons morts, tu serais très content.	7 Now therefore arise, and go out, and speak to the satisfaction of thy servants: for I swear to thee by the Lord, that if thou wilt not go forth, there will not tarry with thee so much as one this night: and that will be worse to thee, than all the evils that have befallen thee from thy youth until now.
8 Maintenant lève-toi, sors et parle à tes serviteurs! Je le jure par Yahvé, si tu ne sors pas, personne ne restera près de toi cette nuit, et ce serait pour toi un plus grand malheur que tous ceux qui t’ont frappé depuis ta jeunesse jusqu’à aujourd’hui.”	8 Then the king arose and sat in the gate: and it was told to all the people that the king sat in the gate: and all the people came before the king, but Israel fled to their own dwellings.
9 Alors le roi se leva et vint s’asseoir à la porte. On l’annonça à tout le peuple: “Voici, le roi est assis à la porte.” Et tout le peuple se présenta devant le roi. Tous les gens d’Israël s’étaient enfui chez eux,	9 And all the people were at strife in all the tribes of Israel, saying: The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines: and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.
10 et dans toutes les tribus d’Israël on discutait. On disait: “C’est le roi qui nous a délivrés de la main de tous nos ennemis, c’est lui qui nous a délivrés des Philistins, et maintenant à cause d’Absalom il a dû s’enfuir du pays.	10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in the battle: how long are you silent, and bring not back the king?
11 Cet Absalom que nous avions consacré comme roi, il est mort dans la bataille, alors, ne ferez-vous rien pour ramener le roi?”	11 And king David sent to Sadoc, and Abiathar the priests, saying: Speak to the ancients of Juda, saying: Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? (For the talk of all Israel was come to the king in his house.)
12 Ce que l’on disait dans tout Israël arriva aux oreilles du roi. Le roi David donna cette mission aux prêtres Sadoq et Ébyatar: “Faites passer ce message aux anciens de Juda: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à faire revenir le roi chez lui?	12 You are my brethren, you are my bone, and my flesh, why are you the last to bring back the king?
13 N’êtes-vous pas mes frères? N’êtes-vous pas de ma chair et de mes os? Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à faire revenir le roi?	13 And say ye to Amasa: Art not thou my bone, and my flesh? So do God to me and add more, if thou be not the chief captain of the army before me always in the place of Joab.
14 Vous direz aussi à Amasa: N’es-tu pas de ma chair et de mes os? Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je ne te fais pas chef de l’armée à la place de Joab.”	14 And be inclined the heart of all the men of Juda, as it were of one man: and they sent to the king, saying: Return thou, and all thy servants.
15 Par ces paroles il gagna la confiance de tous les hommes de Juda, et d’un commun accord ils envoyèrent ce message au roi: “Reviens avec tous tes serviteurs.”	15 And the king returned and came as far as the Jordan, and all Juda came as far as Galgal to meet the king, and to bring him over the Jordan.
16 Le roi revint donc. Il atteignait le Jourdain lorsque les gens de Juda arrivèrent à Guilgal, venant à la rencontre du roi pour l’aider à traverser le Jourdain.	16 And Semei the son of Gera the son of Jemini of Bahurim, made haste and went down with the men of Juda to meet king David,
17 Chiméï fils de Guéra, le Benjaminite de Bahourim, descendait avec les gens de Juda au-devant du roi David,	17 With a thousand men of Benjamin, and Siba the servant of the house of Saul: and his fifteen sons, and twenty servants were with him: and going over the Jordan,
18 amenant avec lui 1 000 hommes de la tribu de Benjamin. Siba, l’intendant de la maison de Saül, était descendu dans le Jourdain avec ses 15 fils et ses 20 serviteurs au devant du roi David,	18 They passed the fords before the king, that they might help over the king's household, and do according to his commandment. And Semei the son of Gera falling down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan,
19 pour faire traverser la famille du roi, et pour toute autre chose qu’il pouvait désirer. Chiméï fils de Guéra se jeta aux pieds du roi au moment où il traversait le Jourdain.	19 Said to him: Impute not to me, my lord, the iniquity, nor remember the injuries of thy servant on the day that thou, my lord, the king, wentest out of Jerusalem, nor lay it up in thy heart, O king.
20 Il dit au roi: “Que mon seigneur oublie ma faute, ne m’en garde pas rancune. Oublie le mal que ton serviteur a fait à mon seigneur le roi, le jour où il sortait de Jérusalem.	20 For I thy servant acknowledge my sin: and therefore I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph, and am come down to meet my lord the king.
21 Ton serviteur sait bien qu’il a péché, mais aujourd’hui il est venu le premier de toute la maison de Joseph pour descendre à la rencontre de mon seigneur le roi.”	21 But Abisai the son of Sarvia answering, said: Shall Semei for these words not be put to death, because he cursed the Lord's anointed?
22 Abisaï fils de Sérouya prit la parole et dit: “Chiméï mérite la mort, car il a maudit le roi consacré par Yahvé.”	22 And David said: What have I to do with you, ye sons of Sarvia? why are you a satan this day to me? shall there any man be killed this day in Israel? do not I know that this day I am made king over Israel?
23 Mais David répondit: “Ne vous mêlez pas de mes affaires, fils de Sérouya, vous me feriez du tort aujourd’hui si quelqu’un était mis à mort en Israël. Je sais très bien qu’aujourd’hui je suis roi de tout Israël.”	23 And the king said to Semei: Thou shalt not die. And he swore unto him.
24 Et le roi fit à Chiméï ce serment: “Tu ne mourras pas.”	24 And Miphiboseth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and he had neither washed his feet, nor trimmed his beard: nor washed his garments from the day that the king went out, until the day of his return in peace.
25 Méribaal, le fils de Saül, était descendu lui aussi à la rencontre du roi. Depuis le jour où le roi était parti, jusqu’à ce jour où il revenait en paix, Méribaal ne s’était pas lavé les pieds ni les mains, il n’avait pas taillé sa moustache ni lavé ses vêtements.	25 And when he met the king at Jerusalem, the king said to him: Why camest thou not with me, Miphiboseth?
26 Comme il arrivait de Jérusalem au-devant du roi, le roi lui demanda: “Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu avec moi Méribaal?”	26 And he answering, said: My lord, O king, my servant despised me: for I thy servant spoke to him to saddle me an ass, that I might get on and go with the king: for I thy servant am lame.
27 Il répondit: “Mon seigneur le roi, c’est mon serviteur qui m’a trompé. Je lui avais dit: Selle mon ânesse, je la monterai pour rejoindre le roi, car tu le sais, ton serviteur est infirme.	27 Moreover he hath also accused me thy servant to thee, my lord the king: but thou my lord the king art as an angel of God, do what pleaseth thee.
28 Et voilà qu’il m’a calomnié auprès de mon seigneur le roi. Mais mon seigneur le roi est comme l’ange de Yahvé, qu’il agisse aujourd’hui comme bon lui semble.	28 For all of my father's house were no better than worthy of death before my lord the king; and thou hast set me thy servant among the guests of thy table: what just complaint therefore have I? or what right to cry any more to the king?
29 La famille de mon père ne pouvait rien attendre de mon seigneur le roi sinon la mort, et cependant tu m’as admis parmi ceux qui mangent à ta table. De quel droit pourrais-je encore demander quelque chose au roi?”	29 Then the king said to him: Why speakest thou any more? what I have said is determined: thou and Siba divide the possessions.
30 Le roi lui dit: “Assez de discours! Toi et Siba, vous partagerez les terres.”	30 And Miphiboseth answered the king: Yea, let him take all, for as much as my lord the king is returned peaceably into his house.
31 Méribaal dit au roi: “Qu’il garde tout, puisque mon seigneur le roi est rentré chez lui en paix.”	31 Berzellai also the Galaadite coming down from Rogelim, brought the king over the Jordan, being ready also to wait on him beyond the river.
32 Barzillaï de Galaad était descendu de Roglim, il avait passé le Jourdain avec le roi avant de prendre congé de lui.	32 Now Berzellai the Galaadite was of a great age, that is to say, fourscore years old, and he provided the king with sustenance when he abode in the camp: for he was a man exceeding rich.
33 Or Barzillaï était très vieux, il avait 80 ans; c’est lui qui avait ravitaillé le roi alors qu’il était à Mahanayim, car c’était un homme très riche.	33 And the king said to Berzellai: Come with me that thou mayest rest secure with me in Jerusalem.
34 Le roi dit à Barzillaï: “Reste avec moi et je te nourrirai à Jérusalem.”	34 And Berzellai said to the king: How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
35 Mais Barzillaï dit au roi: “Combien de jours, combien d’années me reste-t-il à vivre pour que je vienne avec le roi à Jérusalem?	35 I am this day fourscore years old, are my senses quick to discern sweet and bitter? or can meat or drink delight thy servant? or can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? why should thy servant be a burden to my lord, the king?
36 J’ai maintenant 80 ans et je ne distingue plus ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais, je n’ai plus le goût de ce que je mange ou de ce que je bois, je n’entends plus la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses. Pourquoi donc ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur le roi?	36 I thy servant will go on a little way from the Jordan with thee: I need not this recompense.
37 Ton serviteur t’accompagnera encore un peu au-delà du Jourdain, mais pourquoi le roi me donnerait-il une telle récompense?	37 But I beseech thee let thy servant return, and die in my own city, and be buried by the sepulchre of my father, and of my mother. But there is thy servant Chamaam, let him go with thee, my lord, the king, and do to him whatsoever seemeth good to thee.
38 Permets-moi de retourner et de mourir dans ma ville, près du tombeau de mon père et de ma mère. Mais mon fils Kinham, ton serviteur, continuera avec mon seigneur le roi et tu feras pour lui ce qui te semblera bon.”	38 Then the king said to him: Let Chamaam go over with me, and I will do for him whatsoever shall please thee, and all that thou shalt ask of me, thou shalt obtain.
39 Le roi dit: “Que Kinham reste avec moi. Je ferai pour lui ce que tu voudras, et tout ce que tu me demanderas, je le ferai pour toi.”	39 And when all the people and the king had passed over the Jordan, the king kissed Berzellai, and blessed him: and he returned to his own place.
40 Tout le peuple traversa le Jourdain après le roi. Lui embrassa Barzillaï et le bénit, et celui-ci s’en retourna chez lui.	40 So the king went on to Galgal, and Chamaam with him. Now all the people of Juda had brought the king over, and only half of the people of Israel were there.
41 Le roi marcha vers Guilgal en compagnie de Kinham; tout le peuple de Juda accompagnait le roi, ainsi que la moitié du peuple d’Israël.	41 Therefore all the men of Israel running together to the king, said to him: Why have our brethren the men of Juda stolen thee away, and have brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all the men of David with him?
42 C’est alors que les hommes d’Israël vinrent auprès du roi et lui dirent: “Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t’ont-ils enlevé avec ta famille pour te faire traverser le Jourdain, alors que tu avais là toute ta garde avec toi?”	42 And all the men of Juda answered the men of Israel: Because the king is nearer to me: why art thou angry for this matter? have we eaten any thing of the king's, or have any gifts been given us?
43 Les hommes de Juda répondirent aux Israélites: “Le roi n’est-il pas de notre tribu? Pourquoi vous mettre en colère? Est-ce que le roi nous a donné à manger, ou quelque chose d’autre?”	43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Juda, and said: I have ten parts in the king more than thou, and David belongeth to me more than to thee: why hast thou done me a wrong, and why was it not told me first, that I might bring back my king? And the men of Juda answered more harshly than the men of Israel.
44 Les Israélites répondirent aux hommes de Juda: “Nous avons dix fois plus de droits que vous sur le roi. Pourquoi donc nous avoir méprisés? C’est nous qui avons demandé les premiers le retour de notre roi.” Mais les hommes de Juda leur répondirent durement, plus qu’eux-mêmes ne l’avaient fait.
