Primo libro di Samuele 8

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Divenuto vecchio, Samuele costituì come giudici d'Israele i suoi figli.	1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.
2 Il primogenito si chiamava Joel e il secondo Abia e giudicavano a Bersabea.	2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.
3 Ma i suoi figli non seguirono le sue orme, e, datisi all'avarizia, accettarono doni e pervertirono la giustizia.	3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.
4 Riunitisi quindi tutti gli anziani d'Israele, andarono a Ramata da Samuele	4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,
5 e gli dissero: «Tu sei ormai vecchio e i tuoi figli non seguono i tuoi esempi; perciò costituisci sopra di noi un re che ci giudichi, come l'hanno tutte le nazioni».	5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'
6 A Samuele spiacque questo loro dire: «Dacci un re che ci giudichi»; e pregò il Signore,	6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.
7 il quale gli disse: «Ascolta la voce del popolo in tutto quello che ti dicono, poichè non te hanno rigettato, ma me, affinchè io non regni su di loro.	7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected
8 Come han sempre agito, dal giorno che li trassi dall'Egitto fino ad oggi, abbandonando me per servire gli dèi stranieri, così fanno anche con te.	8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.
9 Ora dunque ascolta la loro voce, soltanto protesta e preannunzia loro i diritti del re che regnerà su di essi».	9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'
10 Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore, al popolo, che aveva chiesto un re,	10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.
11 e soggiunse: «Questo sarà il diritto del re che regnerà su di voi: prenderà i vostri figli e li porrà sui suoi carri, e se ne farà dei cavalieri e dei battistrada alle sue quadrighe;	11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.
12 e li costituirà suoi tribuni e centurioni e aratori dei suoi campi e mietitori delle sue biade e fabbricatori delle sue armi e dei suoi carri.	12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.
13 Anche le vostre figlie se le prenderà per confezionar unguenti, per accendere il fuoco e fare il pane.	13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.
14 Prenderà i vostri campi, le vigne e i migliori oliveti per darli ai suoi servi.	14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.
15 Si prenderà pure la decima sulle vostre biade e sui prodotti delle vostre vigne, per darle ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi servi.	15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.
16 Prenderà anche i vostri servi e le serve e il fiore della vostra gioventù e i vostri asini per valersene nei suoi lavori.	16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.
17 Vi decimerà anche il gregge e voi sarete i suoi servi.	17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.
18 Allora alzerete le vostre grida contro il re che vi sarete eletto; ma in quel dì il Signore non vi esaudirà, perchè voi avete chiesto per voi un re».	18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'
19 Il popolo non volle dare ascolto alle parole di Samuele, anzi dissero: «No, no: noi avremo un re su di noi,	19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,
20 e saremo anche noi come tutti i popoli: il nostro re ci giudicherà, ci andrà innanzi e combatterà per noi le nostre battaglie».	20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'
21 Sentite Samuele tutte queste parole del popolo, le riferì al Signore,	21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.
22 che gli disse: «Ascolta la loro voce; costituisci sopra di essi un re». Samuele allora disse agli Israeliti: «Ritorni ciascuno alla sua città».	22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'
