1 When Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, had heard these things, specifically, that Joshua had seized Ai, and had overthrown it, (for just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so did he do to Ai and its king,) and that the Gibeonites had fled over to Israel, and were now their confederates,	1 La qual cosa conciosia cosa che l'udisse Adonisedec, re di Ierusalem, che ciò fosse che Iosuè avesse presa la città di Ai, e avessela disfatta; e come avea fatto a Gerico e al re suo, così fece ad Ai e al re suo; e che i Gabaoniti se ne fossono andati ad Israel, e fossono patteggiati con loro,
2 he was very afraid. For Gibeon was a great city, and was one of the royal cities, and was greater than the town of Ai, and all its warriors were very strong.	2 ebbe grande paura; imperciò che Gabaon sì era grande cittade, e una delle cittadi regali, e maggiore che il castello d' Ai, e tutti i suoi combattitori fortissimi.
3 Therefore, Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, the king of Hebron, and to Piram, the king of Jarmuth, and also to Japhia, the king of Lachish, and to Debir, the king of Eglon, saying:	3 E mandò Adonisedec, re di Ierusalem, ad Oam re di Ebron, e a Faran re di Ierimot, e a Iafia re di Lachis, e a Dabir re di Eglon, dicendo:
4 “Ascend to me, and bring troops, so that we may fight against Gibeon. For it has fled over to Joshua and the sons of Israel.”	4 Venite su con meco a farmi aiuto, a ciò che (combattiamo e) pigliamo Gabaon, (e sappiamo quale è la cagione) che s'è fuggito ai figliuoli d' Israel a Iosuè.
5 And so, having assembled, the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, together with their armies, went up and encamped around Gibeon, laying siege to it.	5 E raunati insieme cinque re degli Amorrei andorono suso, cioè il re [di Ierusalem e il re] di Ebron e il re di Ierimot e il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon, tutti insieme con loro oste (e con la loro gente da combattere, e andarono), e puosero il campo a lato a Gabaon, combattendola.
6 But the inhabitants of the city of Gibeon, when it was besieged, sent to Joshua, who was then staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him: “May you not draw back your hands from helping your servants. Come quickly, and free us, and bring troops. For all the kings of the Amorites, who live in the mountains, have gathered together against us.”	6 E quelli della città assediati sì mandarono a Iosuè, il quale era a campo in Galgala, e sì gli dissono non tardare di dare aiutorio alli servi tuoi, vieni suso tosto e liberaci e aiutaci, imperciò che sono raunati tutti i re degli Amorrei contro a noi, i quali abitano su ne' monti.
7 And Joshua ascended from Gilgal, and the entire army of warriors with him, very strong men.	7 E levossi suso Iosuè di Galgala, e tutto l'oste de' combattitori con lui, uomini fortissimi.
8 And the Lord said to Joshua: “You should not fear them. For I have delivered them into your hands. None of them will be able to withstand you.”	8 E disse Iddio Signore a Iosuè: non avere paura di loro, imperciò ch' io gli ho dati (e messi) nelle tue mani, e niuno di loro ti potrà contrastare.
9 And so Joshua, ascending from Gilgal throughout the night, rushed upon them suddenly.	9 E corse sopra di loro in fretta Iosuè, venendo tutta la notte di Galgala.
10 And the Lord set them in disarray before the face of Israel. And he crushed them in a great defeat at Gibeon, and he pursued them along the way of the ascent to Beth-horon, and he struck them down, even as far as Azekah and Makkedah.	10 E lo Signore li sbigottì dinanzi alli figliuoli d'Israel, e sì gli percosse in Gabaon di una grande piaga, e sì gli perseguitò per la via dove si va suso in Bet-oron, e sì gli perseguitò (Iosuè) e uccise, insino ad Azeca e a Maceda.
11 And while they were fleeing from the sons of Israel, and were on the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord cast great stones from heaven upon them, as far as Azekah. And many more were killed by the hailstones, than were struck down by the swords of the sons of Israel.	11 E fuggendo loro i figliuoli d' Israel, e fossero nell' andare giuso di Bet-oron, Iddio Signore mandò adosso loro dal cielo pietre grandissime, d'insino ad Azeca; e più ne morirono assai delle pietre, che non furono coloro che aveano morti colle coltella i figliuoli d' Israel.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, on the day that he handed over the Amorite in the sight of the sons of Israel, and he said before them: “O sun, you shall not move toward Gibeon! O moon, you shall not move toward the valley of Aijalon!”	12 E allora favellò Iosuè a Dio Signore (e ord) quel dì che gli avea dato l' Amorreo (e isconfitto) dinanzi a' figliuoli d' Israel, e disse dinanzi a loro: sole, non (ti mutare e non) ti muovere dirimpetto a Gabaon (cioè istà fermo) e tu, luna, verso la valle d'Aialon non ti muovere.
13 And the sun and the moon stood still, until the people had avenged themselves of their enemies. Has this not been written in the book of the just? And so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and it did not hurry to its rest for the space of one day.	13 E istetteno il sole e la luna fermi, insino a tanto che (Iosuè e Israel) si vendicasse de' suoi nemici. Non è egli iscritto questo nel libro de' giusti? Egli istette, il sole, nel mezzo del cielo; e non s' affrettò di tramontare per ispazio d' uno dì.
14 Never before and never after was there so long a day, as when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man, and fought for Israel.	14 E non venne mai, nè innanzi nè poi, sì grande dì, obbedendo Iddio alla voce dell' uomo, e combattendo per Israel.
15 And Joshua returned, with all of Israel, into the camp of Gilgal.	15 E tornò Iosuè, con tutti i figliuoli d' Israel, nell'oste di Galgala.
16 For the five kings had fled, and had hidden themselves in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.	16 E i cinque re erano fuggiti, e si nascoseno nella spelonca della cittade di Maceda.
17 And it was reported to Joshua that the five kings had been found hidden in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.	17 E fu nunciato (e ridetto) a Iosuè, che fossono trovati quelli cinque re, nascosti nella spelonca di Maceda.
18 And he instructed his companions and said: “Roll vast stones to the mouth of the cave, and station attentive men who will keep them closed.	18 Il quale comandò a' compagni suoi, e disse: volgete (e ponete) sassi grandissimi alla bocca della spelonca, e ponetevi uomini savi e discreti, che gli guardino bene.
19 But as for you, do not stay here; instead, pursue the enemies, and cut down the lattermost of those who are fleeing. You shall not permit those whom the Lord God has delivered into your hands to enter into the protection of their cities.”	19 Ma voi non vogliate più istare, ma perseguitate i nemici; e tutti coloro (che trovate di dietro di coloro) che fuggono, sì gli (tagliate e) uccidete; non gli lasciate entrare nelle fortezze delle cittadi loro, i quali Iddio nostro Signore ha dati nelle vostre mani.
20 Thus, the adversaries were struck down in a great defeat, and having been nearly consumed, even to utter annihilation, those who were able to escape from Israel entered into fortified cities.	20 E tagliati (e morti) gli avversarii (e nemici) d'una grande piaga, e consumatigli quasi tutti, coloro i quali erano potuti fuggire [da] Israel sì entrarono nelle cittadi acconcie e armate.
21 And the entire army returned to Joshua at Makkedah, where they were then encamped, in good health and in their full numbers. And no one dared to move his tongue against the sons of Israel.	21 E tornò tutta l'oste a Iosuè in Maceda, dove allora erano le trabacche, e il campo e l'oste, tutti sani e in quello numero che sì furono; e non fu niuno ardito contro a' figliuoli d' Israel d' aprire la bocca nè fiatare.
22 And Joshua instructed, saying, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forward to me the five kings, who are hidden within it.”	22 E comandò Iosuè, dicendo loro: aprite la bocca della spelonca, e menatemi i cinque re i quali vi stanno nascosti dentro.
23 And the ministers did just as they had been ordered. And they led out to him the five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.	23 E fecero i (fanti e) ministri sì come era istato loro comandato; e sì gli menarono i cinque re della spelonca; cioè il re di Ierusalem, il re d' Ebron, il re di Ierimont e il re di Lachis e il re di Eglon.
24 And when they had been led out to him, he called all the men of Israel, and he said to the leaders of the army who were with him, “Go, and place your feet upon the necks of these kings.” And when they had gone and had tread their feet upon the necks of those who were thrown down,	24 Ed essendo tutti menati a lui, sì chiamò tutti i figliuoli d' Israel, e disse a' principi dell' oste i quali erano con lui: andate e ponete i piedi sopra i colli di quegli re. I quali essendo andati, e ponendo i piedi e calcando i colli di costoro che istavano di sotto loro,
25 he spoke to them again: “Do not be afraid, and do not dread. Be strengthened and be steadfast. For so will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom you fight.”	25 un' altra volta disse loro Iosuè: non abbiate paura niuna, nè non vi sbigottite, confortatevi e siate (forti e) robusti; così farà Iddio a tutti i vostri nemici, contra' quali voi andate a combattere.
26 And Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he suspended them on five gallows. And they hung there until evening.	26 E sì gli percosse Iosuè (e uccisegli) e impiccogli in su cinque legni; e istetteno impiccati d'insino al vespro.
27 And when the sun had set, he instructed his assistants that they should take them down from the gallows. And having been taken down, they cast them into the cave, where they had lain hidden, and they set vast stones at its mouth, which remain, even to the present.	27 E tramontando poi il sole, comandò a' suoi compagni, che gli spiccassero d' in su le forche. I quali posti giuso, sì gli gittarono nella spelonca nella quale s'erano nascosi; e puosero loro addosso sassi grandissimi e pesanti, i quali vi stanno insino al di presente.
28 Also on the same day, Joshua seized Makkedah, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and he put to death its king and all its inhabitants. He did not leave in it even the smallest remains. And he did to the king of Makkedah, just as he had done to the king of Jericho.	28 E in quel dì medesimo Iosuè prese Maceda, e sì la messe alle coltella, e uccise il re suo e tutti i suoi abitatori, e non ci lasciò entro reliquia (nè casa nè persona niuna); e così fece al re di Maceda sì come fece al re di Gerico.
29 Then he went on, with all of Israel, from Makkedah to Libnah, and he fought against it.	29 E poi passò con tutto Israel di Maceda in Lebna, e combatteva contro a loro.
30 And the Lord delivered it, with its king, into the hands of Israel. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, and all its inhabitants. They did not leave in it any remains. And they did to the king of Libnah, just as they had done to the king of Jericho.	30 La quale Iddio Signore (gli) diede nelle (sue) mani d' Israel, insieme col suo re; e sì cacciarono a terra la città, e uccisero tutti i suoi abitatori (e miseno) alle punta delle coltella, e non vi lasciarono dentro niuna reliquia; e feceno al re di Lebna, come feceno al re di Gerico.
31 From Libnah, with all of Israel, he went on to Lachish. And taking positions around it with his army, he besieged it.	31 E di Lebna passò con tutto Israel in Lachis; e posto l'oste intorno alla città, sì la combattea.
32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and he seized it on the following day, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every soul that was in it, just as he had done to Libnah.	32 E diede Iddio Signore Lachis nelle mani (de' figliuoli) d' Israel; e sì la pigliò l' altro dì, e misela alle punte delle coltella; e tutte l'anime (diuomo o di bestia) quali furono trovate dentro, così ne fece, come avea fatto alla città (e alla gente) di Lebna.
33 At that time, Horam, the king of Gezer, went up so that he might assist Lachish. And Joshua struck him with all his people, even unto utter annihilation.	33 In quello tempo venne suso il re di Gazer, il quale si chiamava Oram, acciò che desse aiuto alla città di Lachis. Il quale percosse Iosuè (e isconfisse e uccise) con tutto il popolo suo, insino che ne rimase niuno.
34 And he went on from Lachish to Eglon, and he surrounded it.	34 E passò di Lachis (e partissi, e venne) in Eglon; e sì la attorniò.
35 And he also defeated it on the same day. And he struck all the souls that were in it with the edge of the sword, in accord with all that he had done to Lachish.	35 E combattella, e quello medesimo di sì messe alle coltella tutte l' anime che v'erano dentro, secondo quello che avea fatto in Lachis.
36 He also ascended, with all of Israel, from Eglon into Hebron, and he fought against it.	36 E sali suso, con tutto quanto l'oste d' Israel, di Eglon; e venne in Ebron, e combatteo contro a lei.
37 He seized it and struck it with the edge of the sword, likewise with its king, and all the towns of that region, and all the souls that were staying in it. He did not leave any remains in it. Just as he had done to Eglon, so also did he do to Hebron, consuming with the sword all that he found within it.	37 E sì la pigliò, e misela alle coltella, e il re suo e tutte le castella di quella contrada, e tutte l'anime che dentro v'erano istate; e non vi lasciò reliquia niuna; sì come avea fatto ad Eglon, così fece ad Ebron, tutte le cose (e uomini e animali) consumando colle coltella.
38 Returning from there to Debir,	38 Quindi tornato, venne in Dabir.
39 he seized it and laid waste to it, likewise with its king. And all the surrounding towns, he struck with the edge of the sword. He did not leave in it any remains. Just as he had done to Hebron and Libnah, and to their kings, so did he do to Debir and to its king.	39 E si la pigliò, e sì la guastò; e il re suo e tutte le castella d' intorno si mise alle punte della coltella, e non vi lasciò reliquia niuna; sì come avea fatto ad Ebron e a Lebna e alle contrade loro, così fece a Dabir e al re suo.
40 And so Joshua struck the entire land, the mountains, and the south, and the plains, and the descending slopes, with their kings. He did not leave in it any remains, but he put to death all that was able to breathe, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had instructed him,	40 E isconfisse Iosuè (e cacciò a terra) tutte le terre de' monti e della parte del mezzodì, e tutte quelle del piano, e Asedot con tutti i suoi re; e non vi lasciò reliquia niuna, ma tutte quelle cose che poteano respirare sì uccise, come avea comandato Iddio Signore d' Israel,
41 from Kadesh-barnea, as far as Gaza, with all the land of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.	41 da Cadesbarne insino a Gaza; tutta quanta la terra di Gosen, insino a Gabaon,
42 And all their kings and their regions, he seized and destroyed with a single attack. For the Lord, the God of Israel, fought on his behalf.	42 tutti quanti i re, e le loro contrade, tutte le pigliò ad uno tratto, e sì le guastò; imperciò che Iddio Signore d' Israel si combatteo per lui.
43 And he returned, with all of Israel, to the place of the encampment at Gilgal.	43 E tornò con tutto Israel al luogo (dell' oste e) del campo in Galgala.
