Now Saul, still breathing threats and beatings against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,1 Intanto Saulo, ancora spirante minacce e stragi contro i discepoli del Signore, presentatosi al sommo sacerdote,
and he petitioned him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that, if he found any men or women belonging to this Way, he could lead them as prisoners to Jerusalem.2 gli chieso lettere per le sinagoghe di Damasco; affin di menare legati a Gerusalemme quanti avesse trovato di quella fede uomini e donno.
And as he made the journey, it happened that he was approaching Damascus. And suddenly, a light from heaven shone around him.3 E durante il viaggio avvenne che avvicinandosi lui a Damasco, d'improvviso una luce del cielo gli sfolgoreggiò d'intorno.
And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”4 E caduto per terra sentì una voce che gli disse: Saulo, Saulo, perchè mi perseguiti?
And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goad.”5 Ed egli chiese: Chi sei, Signore? E l'altro: Io sono Gesù che tu perseguiti; dura cosa è per te ricalcitrare contro il pungolo.
And he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do you want me to do?”6 E tremante e stupefatto, Saulo disse: Signore, che vuoi ch'io faccia? E il Signore: Alzati ed entra in città, lì ti sarà detto quello che devi fare.
And the Lord said to him, “Rise up and go into the city, and there you will be told what you ought to do.” Now the men who were accompanying him were standing stupefied, hearing indeed a voice, but seeing no one.7 E i suoi compagni di viaggio restarono attoniti, udendo la voce, ma non vedendo nessuno.
Then Saul rose up from the ground. And upon opening his eyes, he saw nothing. So leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.8 Saulo poi s'alzò da terra, ma aperti gli occhi, non vedeva niente. Allora, menatolo per mano, lo condussero in Damasco,
And in that place, he was without sight for three days, and he neither ate nor drank.9 ove rimase tre giorni senza vista, senza prendere cibo nè bevanda.
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias. And the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias!” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”10 Or c'era in Damasco un certo discepolo chiamato Anania, al quale il Signore disse in visione: Anania. Ed egli rispose: Eccomi, Signore.
And the Lord said to him: “Rise up and go into the street that is called Straight, and seek, in the house of Judas, the one named Saul of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying.”11 Ed il Signore a lui: Alzati e va nella strada chiamata la Diritta, e cerca in casa di Giuda uno di Tarso che si chiama Saulo: ecco egli già prega
(And Paul saw a man named Ananias entering and imposing hands upon him, so that he might receive his sight.)12 (ed ha veduto in visione un uomo di nome Anania andare ad imporgli le mani perchè ricuperi la vista).
But Ananias responded: “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.13 Anania rispose: Signore, ho da molti sentito dire, riguardo a quest'uomo, quanti mali abbia fatto ai tuoi santi in Gerusalemme.
And he has authority here from the leaders of the priests to bind all who invoke your name.”14 E questi ha dai principi dei sacerdoti il potere di arrestare qui tutti quelli che invocano il tuo nome.
Then the Lord said to him: “Go, for this one is an instrument chosen by me to convey my name before nations and kings and the sons of Israel.15 Ma il Signore gli disse: Va, perchè egli è uno strumento da me eletto a portare il mio nome davanti ai Gentili, ai re ed ai figli d'Israele.
For I will reveal to him how much he must suffer on behalf of my name.”16 Ed io gli mostrerò quanto dovrà patire per il mio nome.
And Ananias departed. And he entered the house. And laying his hands upon him, he said: “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, he who appeared to you on the way by which you arrived, sent me so that you would receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”17 E andò Anania, ed entrò in quella casa e, impostegli le mani, disse: Fratello Saulo, il Signore Gesù, quello che t'apparve nella strada per cui venivi, mi ha mandato a te, affinchè tu ricuperi la vista e sii ripieno di Spirito Santo.
And immediately, it was as if scales had fallen from his eyes, and he received his sight. And rising up, he was baptized.18 E in quell'istante caddero dagli occhi di lui come delle scaglie e ricuperò la vista,
And when he had taken a meal, he was strengthened. Now he was with the disciples who were at Damascus for some days.19 e, alzatosi, si fece battezzare, quindi, preso del cibo, riacquistò le forze. E stette alcuni giorni coi discepoli che erano a Damasco.
And he was continuously preaching Jesus in the synagogues: that he is the Son of God.20 E subito si mise a predicare nelle sinagoghe che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio.
And all who heard him were astonished, and they said, “Is this not the one who, in Jerusalem, was fighting against those invoking this name, and who came here for this: so that he might lead them away to the leaders of the priests?”21 E tutti quelli che udivano, dicevano stupefatti: Non è costui che in Gerusalemme disperdeva quelli che invocavano questo nome e non è venuto per condurli legati ai principi dei sacerdoti?
But Saul was increasing to a greater extent in ability, and so he was confounding the Jews who lived at Damascus, by affirming that he is the Christ.22 Ma Saulo diveniva sempre più forte e confondeva i Giudei che abitavano in Damasco, dimostrando esser Gesù il Cristo.
And when many days were completed, the Jews took counsel as one, so that they might put him to death.23 Or passati molti giorni, i Giudei si misero d'accordo per ucciderlo.
But their treachery became known to Saul. Now they were also watching the gates, day and night, so that they might put him to death.24 Ma furono note a Paolo le loro insidie. Essi facevano la guardia dì e notte alle porte per ammazzarlo.
But the disciples, taking him away by night, sent him over the wall by letting him down in a basket.25 Ma i discepoli, presolo di nottetempo, lo calarono giù dalle mura mettendolo in una cesta.
And when he had arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to join himself to the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.26 E andatosene a Gerusalemme, cercava di unirsi coi discepoli, ma tutti ne avevano paura, non credendo che fosse discepolo.
But Barnabas took him aside and led him to the Apostles. And he explained to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how, in Damascus, he had acted faithfully in the name of Jesus.27 Però Barnaba, presolo con sè, lo menò dagli Apostoli, ed espose loro come nella via egli avesse veduto il Signore che gli aveva parlato, e come in Damasco avesse francamente predicato nel nome di Gesù.
And he was with them, entering and departing Jerusalem, and acting faithfully in the name of the Lord.28 E andava e stava con essi in Gerusalemme, predicando coraggiosamente nel nome del Signore.
He also was speaking with the Gentiles and disputing with the Greeks. But they were seeking to kill him.29 E parlava coi Gentili e disputava coi Greci; ma essi cercavano di ucciderlo.
And when the brothers had realized this, they brought him to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.30 Ciò saputo, i fratelli lo accompagnarono a Cesarea, e di là lo fecero partire per Tarso.
Certainly, the Church had peace throughout all of Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and it was being built up, while walking in the fear of the Lord, and it was being filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.31 Così la Chiesa aveva pace per tutta la Giudea, la Galilea e la Samaria, e si edificava, camminando nel timor di Dio, ed era ricolma della consolazione dello Spirito Santo.
Then it happened that Peter, as he traveled around everywhere, came to the saints who were living at Lydda.32 Or avvenne che Pietro andando a visitare tutti i fedeli, giunse dai santi che abitavano in Lidda.
But he found there a certain man, named Aeneas, who was a paralytic, who had lain in bed for eight years.33 E ci trovò un uomo chiamato Enea che da otto anni giaceva paralitico in letto.
And Peter said to him: “Aeneas, the Lord Jesus Christ heals you. Rise up and arrange your bed.” And immediately he rose up.34 E Pietro gli disse: Enea, il Signore Geesù Cristo ti risana, alzati ed accomoda il tuo letto. E subito si rrizzò.
And all who were living in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they were converted to the Lord.35 E lo videro tutti gli ambitanti di Lidda e di Saron, i quali si convertirono al Signore.
Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which in translation is called Dorcas. She was filled with the good works and almsgiving that she was accomplishing.36 C'era poi in Ioppe una certa discepola, di nome Tabita, che interpretato vuol dire Dorcade. Essa era ricca di buone opere e faceva molte elemosine.
And it happened that, in those days, she became ill and died. And when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.37 Or avvenne che in quei giorni, ammalatasi, morì. E, lavatala, la posero nel cenacolo.
Now since Lydda was close to Joppa, the disciples, upon hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, asking him: “Do not be slow in coming to us.”38 Ed essendo Lidda vicina a Ioppe, i discepoli avendo sentito che vi si trovava Pietro, gli mandarono due uomini a pregarlo: Non ti rincresca di venir fino a noi.
Then Peter, rising up, went with them. And when he had arrived, they led him to an upper room. And all the widows were standing around him, weeping and showing him the tunics and garments that Dorcas had made for them.39 Pietro, alzatosi, andò con essi. E come fu arrivato, lo condussero in un cenacolo e lo attorniarono piangendo tutte le vedove, mostrandogli le tuniche e le vesti che Dorcade loro faceva.
And when they had all been sent outside, Peter, kneeling down, prayed. And turning to the body, he said: “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes and, upon seeing Peter, sat up again.40 Ma Pietro, fatti uscire tutti, postosi in ginocchio, si mise a pregare, e, voltosi al corpo, disse: Tabita, alzati. E quella apri gli occhi, e visto Pietro si mise a sedere.
And offering her his hand, he lifted her up. And when he had called in the saints and the widows, he presented her alive.41 Poi datale una mano, la fece alzare. E chiamati i santi e le vedove la presentò loro viva.
Now this became known throughout all of Joppa. And many believed in the Lord.42 Si seppe ciò in tutta Ioppe e molti credettero nel Signore.
And it happened that he resided for many days in Joppa, with a certain Simon, a tanner.43 E Pietro si fermò parecchi giorni in Ioppe, in casa di un certo Simone cuoiaio.
