CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
Now Saul, still breathing threats and beatings against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,1 OR Saulo, sbuffando ancora minacce ed uccisione contro a’ discepoli del Signore, venne al sommo sacerdote;
and he petitioned him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that, if he found any men or women belonging to this Way, he could lead them as prisoners to Jerusalem.2 e gli chiese lettere alle sinagoghe in Damasco, acciocchè, se pur ne trovava alcuni di questa setta, uomini, o donne, li menasse legati in Gerusalemme.
And as he made the journey, it happened that he was approaching Damascus. And suddenly, a light from heaven shone around him.3 Ora, mentre era in cammino, avvenne che, avvicinandosi a Damasco, di subito una luce dal cielo gli folgorò d’intorno.
And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”4 Ed essendo caduto in terra, udì una voce che gli diceva: Saulo, Saulo, perchè mi perseguiti?
And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goad.”5 Ed egli disse: Chi sei, Signore? E il Signore disse: Io son Gesù, il qual tu perseguiti; egli ti è duro di ricalcitrar contro agli stimoli.
And he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do you want me to do?”6 Ed egli, tutto tremante, e spaventato, disse: Signore, che vuoi tu ch’io faccia? E il Signore gli disse: Levati, ed entra nella città, e ti sarà detto ciò che ti convien fare.
And the Lord said to him, “Rise up and go into the city, and there you will be told what you ought to do.” Now the men who were accompanying him were standing stupefied, hearing indeed a voice, but seeing no one.7 Or gli uomini che facevano il viaggio con lui ristettero attoniti, udendo ben la voce, ma non veggendo alcuno.
Then Saul rose up from the ground. And upon opening his eyes, he saw nothing. So leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.8 E Saulo si levò da terra; ed aprendo gli occhi, non vedeva alcuno; e coloro, menandolo per la mano, lo condussero in Damasco.
And in that place, he was without sight for three days, and he neither ate nor drank.9 E fu tre giorni senza vedere, ne’ quali non mangiò, e non bevve
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias. And the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias!” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”10 Or in Damasco v’era un certo discepolo, chiamato per nome Anania, al quale il Signore disse in visione: Anania. Ed egli disse: Eccomi, Signore.
And the Lord said to him: “Rise up and go into the street that is called Straight, and seek, in the house of Judas, the one named Saul of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying.”11 E il Signore gli disse: Levati, e vattene nella strada detta Diritta; e cerca, in casa di Giuda, un uomo chiamato per nome Saulo, da Tarso; perciocchè, ecco, egli fa orazione.
(And Paul saw a man named Ananias entering and imposing hands upon him, so that he might receive his sight.)12 Or egli avea veduto in visione un uomo, chiamato per nome Anania, entrare, ed imporgli la mano, acciocchè ricoverasse la vista.
But Ananias responded: “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.13 Ed Anania rispose: Signore, io ho udito da molti di quest’uomo, quanti mali egli ha fatti a’ tuoi santi in Gerusalemme.
And he has authority here from the leaders of the priests to bind all who invoke your name.”14 E qui eziandio ha podestà da’ principali sacerdoti di far prigioni tutti coloro che invocano il tuo nome.
Then the Lord said to him: “Go, for this one is an instrument chosen by me to convey my name before nations and kings and the sons of Israel.15 Ma il Signore gli disse: Va’, perciocchè costui mi è un vaso eletto, da portare il mio nome davanti alle genti, ed ai re, ed a’ figliuoli d’Israele.
For I will reveal to him how much he must suffer on behalf of my name.”16 Perciocchè io gli mostrerò quante cose gli convien patire per lo mio nome.
And Ananias departed. And he entered the house. And laying his hands upon him, he said: “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, he who appeared to you on the way by which you arrived, sent me so that you would receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”17 Anania adunque se ne andò, ed entrò in quella casa; ed avendogli imposte le mani, disse: Fratello Saulo, il Signore Gesù, che ti è apparito per lo cammino, per lo qual tu venivi, mi ha mandato, acciocchè tu ricoveri la vista, e sii ripieno dello Spirito Santo.
And immediately, it was as if scales had fallen from his eyes, and he received his sight. And rising up, he was baptized.18 E in quello stante gli cadder dagli occhi come delle scaglie; e subito ricoverò la vista; poi si levò, e fu battezzato.
And when he had taken a meal, he was strengthened. Now he was with the disciples who were at Damascus for some days.19 Ed avendo preso cibo, si riconfortò. E SAULO stette alcuni giorni co’ discepoli ch’erano in Damasco.
And he was continuously preaching Jesus in the synagogues: that he is the Son of God.20 E subito si mise a predicar Cristo nelle sinagoghe, insegnando ch’egli è il Figliuol di Dio.
And all who heard him were astonished, and they said, “Is this not the one who, in Jerusalem, was fighting against those invoking this name, and who came here for this: so that he might lead them away to the leaders of the priests?”21 E tutti coloro che l’udivano, stupivano, e dicevano: Non è costui quel che ha distrutti in Gerusalemme quelli che invocano questo nome? e per questo è egli eziandio venuto qua, per menarli prigioni a’ principali sacerdoti.
But Saul was increasing to a greater extent in ability, and so he was confounding the Jews who lived at Damascus, by affirming that he is the Christ.22 Ma Saulo vie più si rinforzava, e confondeva i Giudei che abitavano in Damasco, dimostrando che questo Gesù è il Cristo
And when many days were completed, the Jews took counsel as one, so that they might put him to death.23 Ora, passati molti giorni, i Giudei presero insieme consiglio di ucciderlo.
But their treachery became known to Saul. Now they were also watching the gates, day and night, so that they might put him to death.24 Ma le loro insidie vennero a notizia a Saulo. Or essi facevan la guardia alle porte, giorno e notte, acciocchè lo potessero uccidere.
But the disciples, taking him away by night, sent him over the wall by letting him down in a basket.25 Ma i discepoli, presolo di notte, lo calarono a basso per il muro in una sporta.
And when he had arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to join himself to the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.26 E Saulo, quando fu giunto in Gerusalemme, tentava d’aggiungersi co’ discepoli; ma tutti lo temevano, non potendo credere ch’egli fosse discepolo.
But Barnabas took him aside and led him to the Apostles. And he explained to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how, in Damascus, he had acted faithfully in the name of Jesus.27 Ma Barnaba lo prese, e lo menò agli apostoli, e raccontò loro come per cammino egli avea veduto il Signore, e come egli gli avea parlato, e come in Damasco avea francamente parlato nel nome di Gesù.
And he was with them, entering and departing Jerusalem, and acting faithfully in the name of the Lord.28 Ed egli fu con loro in Gerusalemme, andando, e venendo, e parlando francamente nel nome del Signor Gesù.
He also was speaking with the Gentiles and disputing with the Greeks. But they were seeking to kill him.29 Egli parlava eziandio, e disputava coi Greci; ed essi cercavano d’ucciderlo.
And when the brothers had realized this, they brought him to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.30 Ma i fratelli, avendolo saputo, lo condussero in Cesarea, e di là lo mandarono in Tarso.
Certainly, the Church had peace throughout all of Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and it was being built up, while walking in the fear of the Lord, and it was being filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.31 Così la chiesa, per tutta la Giudea, Galilea, e Samaria, avea pace, essendo edificata; e, camminando nel timor del Signore, e nella consolazion dello Spirito Santo, moltiplicava
Then it happened that Peter, as he traveled around everywhere, came to the saints who were living at Lydda.32 Or avvenne che Pietro, andando attorno da tutti, venne eziandio a’ santi, che abitavano in Lidda.
But he found there a certain man, named Aeneas, who was a paralytic, who had lain in bed for eight years.33 E quivi trovò un uomo, chiamato per nome Enea, il qual già da otto anni giacea in un letticello, essendo paralitico.
And Peter said to him: “Aeneas, the Lord Jesus Christ heals you. Rise up and arrange your bed.” And immediately he rose up.34 E Pietro gli disse: Enea, Gesù, che è il Cristo, ti sana; levati, e rifatti il letticello. Ed egli in quello stante si levò.
And all who were living in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they were converted to the Lord.35 E tutti gli abitanti di Lidda, e di Saron, lo videro, e si convertirono al Signore
Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which in translation is called Dorcas. She was filled with the good works and almsgiving that she was accomplishing.36 Or in Ioppe v’era una certa discepola, chiamata Tabita; il qual nome, interpretato, vuol dire Cavriuola; costei era piena di buone opere, e di limosine, le quali ella faceva.
And it happened that, in those days, she became ill and died. And when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.37 Ed in que’ giorni avvenne ch’ella infermò, e morì. E dopo che fu stata lavata, fu posta in una sala.
Now since Lydda was close to Joppa, the disciples, upon hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, asking him: “Do not be slow in coming to us.”38 E, perciocchè Lidda era vicin di Ioppe, i discepoli, udito che Pietro vi era, gli mandarono due uomini, per pregarlo che senza indugio venisse fino a loro.
Then Peter, rising up, went with them. And when he had arrived, they led him to an upper room. And all the widows were standing around him, weeping and showing him the tunics and garments that Dorcas had made for them.39 Pietro adunque si levò, e se ne venne con loro. E, come egli fu giunto, lo menarono nella sala; e tutte le vedove si presentarono a lui, piangendo, e mostrandogli tutte le robe, e le veste, che la Cavriuola faceva, mentre era con loro.
And when they had all been sent outside, Peter, kneeling down, prayed. And turning to the body, he said: “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes and, upon seeing Peter, sat up again.40 E Pietro, messi tutti fuori, si pose inginocchioni, e fece orazione. Poi, ricoltosi al corpo, disse: Tabita, levati. Ed ella aperse gli occhi; e, veduto Pietro, si levò a sedere.
And offering her his hand, he lifted her up. And when he had called in the saints and the widows, he presented her alive.41 Ed egli le diè la mano, e la sollevò; e, chiamati i santi e le vedove, la presentò loro in vita.
Now this became known throughout all of Joppa. And many believed in the Lord.42 E ciò fu saputo per tutta Ioppe, e molti credettero nel Signore.
And it happened that he resided for many days in Joppa, with a certain Simon, a tanner.43 E Pietro dimorò molti giorni in Ioppe, in casa d’un certo Simone coiaio
