Sirach 31

1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.	1 La vigilia della onestade macererae le carni; e il pensiero di lei toglie il sonno.
2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.	2 Il pensiero della prescienza stravolge il senno; e la grande infermitade fece l'anima sobria (e ricordarsi di Dio).
3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.	3 Affaticossi il ricco in radunare avere; nell'ozio suo riempierae di beni (temporali).
4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.	4 Affaticossi il povero nella diminuzione del mangiare (e bere e vestire), e nella fine sarà bisognoso.
5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.	5 Colui che ama oro, non sarà giustificato; e colui che sèguita il consumamento, si niempierà, di quello.
6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.	6 Molti sono dati nelli cadimenti dell' oro; e nella speranza dell' oro si è fatto il perdimento loro.
7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.	7 Legno d' offensione sì è sacrificare oro; guai a coloro che il sèguitano, e ciascuno [imprudente] perirà in quello.
8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.	8 Beato è il ricco che è trovato sanza macula, e che non andoe dietro all' oro, e che non speroe nelli tesori della pecunia.
9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.	9 Chi è costui, e loderemo lui? però ch' egli fece maraviglie in sua vita.
10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.	10 Chi è stato provato in quello, è stato trovato perfetto, e sarà lui in gloria eterna; chi potee travalicare, e non travalicoe (i comandamenti di Dio), e potè fare male, e non lo fece.
11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.	11 Però li beni suoi sono stabiliti nel Signore, e ogni chiesa di santi parlerae le limosine di colui.
12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.	12 Sedesti alla grande mensa? non essere il primo che apra la bocca sopra quella.
13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”	13 Non dire che le cose, che sono sopra quella, sono sì molte.
14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.	14 Ricorditi che l'occhio reo è malvagio.
15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.	15 Quale cosa è più rea che l' occhio (malvagio)? però (che) da ogni faccia lacrimerae, quand' egli vederà.
16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.	16 Non sarai tu primo a stendere la mano, ne poi per invidia contaminato tu ti vergogni.
17 You should not press forward at a feast.	17 Non essere oppresso nel convito (dal vino).
18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.	18 Considera le cose del prossimo tuo da te medesimo.
19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.	19 Usa quelle cose che ti sono messe inanzi, sì come uomo deve usare; e non divorare, acciò che tu non sii molto odiato.
20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.	20 Resta prima per cagione di disciplina; e non essere troppo lungo (mangiatore), acciò che tu non offenda alli altri.
21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.	21 E se tu sedesti nel mezzo di molti, non istendere tu prima che coloro la mano, e non domandare tu prima bere.
22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.	22 Oh come poco vino basta all' uomo ammaestrato! e non sarai gravato dormendo da quello (uno poco), e non sentirai dolore.
23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.	23 Vigilia é collera e tortura nel sonno all' uomo sfrenato;
24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.	24 lo sonno della sanità sarà nell' uomo temperato; elli dormirà infino alla mattina, e l'anima sua diletterassi con lui.
25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.	25 E se tu sarai costretto pure un dì di molto mangiare, lièvati di mezzo di loro, getta fuori, e refrigera il corpo tuo; e non accumulerai al corpo tuo infermitadi.
26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.	26 Odimi, figliuolo, e non mi dispregiare; e in fine troverai le parole mie vere.
27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.	27 Sia veloce in tutte le (buone) opere tue, e nulla infirmità ti si farà incontro.
28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.	28 Le lingue di molti benediceranno colui che sarà splendente nel pane; e ...
29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.	29 ... e la testimonianza di colui (della malizia) sarà vera.
30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.	30 Non provocare coloro che sono solleciti al vino; però che il vino molti ne stermina.
31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.	31 Sì come il fuoco prova il duro ferro, così il vino bevuto in ebbrezza batte li cuori de' superbi.
32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.	32 Ben complessionata vita è alli uomini bere il vino temperatamente; se tu il berai temperatamente, sarai sobrio.
33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?	33 Che vita è quella che si diminuisce per lo vino?
34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.	34 Che è quello che defrauda la vita? la morte.
35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.	35 Dal cominciamento fu creato il vino per allegrare, non per inebriare.
36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.	36 Il vino bevuto temperatamente sì allegra l'anima e il corpo.
37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.	37 Il temperato bere sì è sanitade dell' anima e del corpo.
38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.	38 Il vino molto bevuto fae commovimento e ira e rovine molte.
39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.	39 Il molto bere è amaritudine dell' anima.
40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.	40 La animosità della ebrietà, dello imprudente (e dello sciocco) è offensione, scemante la forza, e che fa ferite.
41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.	41 Nel convito del vino non riprendere il prossimo, e nella gioconditade sua nollo dispregiare.
42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.	42 E non li dire parole di reo uomo, e non lo stringere in ripetere.
