1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:
2 If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?	2 "Oseremo rivolgerti la parola? Tu sei depresso! Eppure chi potrebbe trattenere il discorso?
3 Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.	3 Vedi, tu facevi la lezione a molti e ridavi vigore a mani inerti.
4 Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.	4 Le tue parole sostenevano i vacillanti e rinfrancavano le ginocchia che si piegavano.
5 But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.	5 Ma ora che tocca a te, sei depresso; ora che il colpo ti raggiunge, ne sei sconvolto.
6 Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?	6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia, e l'integrità della tua condotta, la tua speranza?
7 Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?	7 Rammenta, dunque: quale innocente è mai perito? E dove si son visti i giusti sterminati?
8 In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,	8 Per quanto ho costatato, coloro che coltivano malizia e seminano miseria, mietono tali cose.
9 perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.	9 Periscono a un soffio di Dio e sono annientati a un alito della sua ira.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.	10 Il ruggito del leone, le urla della belva e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.
11 The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.	11 Muore il leone per mancanza di preda, e i piccoli della leonessa devono disperdersi.
12 Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.	12 Ora mi fu detta furtivamente una parola, e il mio orecchio ne carpì il mormorìo,
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,	13 tra i fantasmi di visioni notturne, quando il letargo cade sugli uomini.
14 fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.	14 Un terrore mi prese e uno spavento che fece tremare tutte le mie ossa.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.	15 Un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e mi si rizzarono i peli della carne.
16 There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.	16 Uno stava in piedi, non ne distinguevo l'aspetto, solo una figura apparve ai miei occhi; poi udii una voce sommessa:
17 Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?	17 "Può l'uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio, o un mortale essere puro davanti al suo creatore?
18 Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.	18 Vedi, egli non si fida nemmeno dei suoi servi, e nei suoi messaggeri riscontra difetti;
19 How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?	19 quanto più in coloro che abitano case di fango, i cui fondamenti si trovano nella polvere e sono corrosi dal tarlo!
20 From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.	20 Dall'alba alla sera sono ridotti in polvere, senza che nessuno lo avverta, periscono per sempre.
21 But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.	21 Non sono forse già strappate le corde della loro tenda e muoiono senza sapere come?".
