1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 - Prese allora a parlare Elifaz il Temanita e disse:
2 If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?	2 «Se ti rivolgessimo la parola, ne saresti turbato? Eppur chi potrebbe trattenere un discorso spontaneo?
3 Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.	3 Ecco, tu hai dato ammonizione a molti, e mani fiaccate hai rafforzate:
4 Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.	4 i tuoi discorsi sostennero i vacillanti, e le ginocchia tremanti tu hai raffermate;
5 But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.	5 ma adesso che il flagello ti ha raggiunto, vieni meno, ti ha toccato e sei sbigottito.
6 Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?	6 Ov'è dunque la tua religiosità, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza e la perfezione della tua condotta?
7 Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?	7 Ricordati, ti prego, chi mai fu innocente e perì? o quando mai i retti furono distrutti?
8 In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,	8 Al contrario, io ho visto che quei che arano l'iniquitàe seminano i delitti, li mietono pure;
9 perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.	9 pel soffio di Dio essi periscono, dall'alito dell'ira sua sono distrutti.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.	10 Il ruggito del leone e la voce della leonessa [cessò], e i denti dei leoncelli furono spezzati;
11 The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.	11 la tigre venne meno per mancanza di preda, e i nati del leone finirono dispersi.
12 Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.	12 Invero, un'arcana parola a me fu rivolta, e furtivamente percepì il mio orecchio il suo sussurro;
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,	13 nel segreto di visione notturna, quando un sopore suole incombere sugli uomini,
14 fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.	14 uno spavento m'incolse ed un tremito, e tutte l'ossa mie ne furono scosse;
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.	15 e, passando innanzi a me un alito, inorridirono i peli della mia carne,
16 There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.	16 ristetteuno che non conobbi al sembiante, un'immagine mi fu davanti agli occhied una voce quasi di bisbiglio udii:
17 Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?	17 - Può forse l'uomo esser giusto in confronto con Dio, e più del suo Fattore sarà puro il mortale?
18 Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.	18 Ecco, quei che lo servono non sono stimati [puri], e negli angeli suoi trova manchevolezza:
19 How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?	19 quanto più quei che abitano case di creta, quei che hanno per fondamento la polvere, saranno consunti come da tignuola?
20 From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.	20 Fra mattina e sera saranno stroncati; e poichè nessuno riflette periranno in eterno.
21 But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.	21 Verrà in essi strappata la fune della loro [esistenza], e moriranno, ma senza sapienza.
