Job 34

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINJERUSALEM
After proclaiming these things, Eliu now had this to say:1 Elihu reprit son discours et dit:
May the wise hear my words, and may the educated listen to me.2 Et vous, les sages, écoutez mes paroles, vous, les savants, prêtez-moi l'oreille.
For the ear examines words, and the mouth discerns foods by the taste.3 Car l'oreille apprécie les discours comme le palais goûte les mets.
Let us choose judgment for ourselves, and let us consider among ourselves what is best.4 Examinons ensemble ce qui est juste, voyons entre nous ce qui est bien.
For Job has said: “I am just, yet God has subverted my judgment.5 Job a dit: "Je suis juste et Dieu écarte mon droit.
For, within my judgment, there is a lie: my vehement barbs are without any sin.”6 Mon juge envers moi se montre cruel; ma plaie est incurable sans crime de ma part."
What man is there that is like Job, who drinks up derision as if it were water,7 Où trouver un homme tel que Job, qui boive le sarcasme comme l'eau,
who accompanies those who work iniquity, and who walks with impious men?8 fasse route avec les malfaiteurs, marche du même pas que les méchants?
For he has said, “Man will not please God, even if he should travel with him.”9 N'a-t-il pas dit: "L'homme ne tire aucun profit à se plaire dans la société de Dieu?"
Therefore, prudent men, hear me: impiety is far from God, and iniquity is far from the Almighty.10 Aussi écoutez-moi, en hommes de sens. Qu'on écarte de Dieu le mal, de Shaddaï, l'injustice!
For he will restore to man his works, and according to the ways of each, he will repay them.11 Car il rend à l'homme selon ses oeuvres, traite chacun d'après sa conduite.
For truly, God will not condemn in vain, nor will the Almighty repudiate judgment.12 En vérité, Dieu n'agit jamais mal, Shaddaï ne pervertit pas le droit.
What other is established over the earth? Or whom has he placed over the world, which he made?13 Autrement qui donc aurait confié la terre à ses soins, l'aurait chargé de l'univers entier?
But, if he directs his heart towards him, he will draw his spirit and breath to himself.14 S'il ramenait à lui son esprit, s'il concentrait en lui son souffle,
All flesh will fail together, and man will return to ashes.15 toute chair expirerait à la fois et l'homme retournerait à la poussière.
Therefore, if you have understanding, hear what is said, and heed the sound of my eloquence.16 Si tu sais comprendre, écoute ceci, prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles.
Is he that does not love judgment able to be corrected? And how can you so greatly condemn him who is just?17 Un ennemi du droit saurait-il gouverner? Oserais-tu condamner le Juste tout-puissant?
He says to the king, “You are an apostate.” He calls commanders impious.18 Lui, qui dit à un roi: "Vaurien!" traite les nobles de méchants,
He does not accept the reputation of leaders; nor does he recognize the tyrant as he contends against the poor. For all are the work of his hands.19 n'a pas égard aux princes et ne distingue pas du faible l'homme important. Car tous sont l'oeuvre deses mains.
They will die suddenly, and the people will be troubled in the middle of the night, but they will pass through it, and the violent will be taken away without a hand.20 Ils meurent soudain en pleine nuit, les grands périssent et disparaissent, et il écarte un tyran sanseffort.
For his eyes are upon the ways of men, and he examines all of their steps.21 Car ses yeux surveillent les voies de l'homme et il observe tous ses pas.
There is no darkness and no shadow of death, where those who work iniquity may be hidden.22 Pas de ténèbres ou d'ombre épaisse où puissent se cacher les malfaiteurs.
For it is no longer within the power of man to enter into judgment with God.23 Il n'envoie pas d'assignation à l'homme, pour qu'il se présente devant Dieu en justice.
He will break into many innumerable pieces, and he will cause others to stand up in their place.24 Il brise les grands sans enquête et en met d'autres à leur place.
For he knows their works, and, as a result, he will bring the night, and they will be crushed.25 C'est qu'il connaît leurs oeuvres! Il les renverse de nuit et on les piétine.
Just as the impious do, he has struck them in a place where they can be seen.26 Comme des criminels, il les soufflette, en public il les enchaîné,
They, as if with great diligence, have withdrawn from him, and they refused to understand all his ways,27 car ils se sont détournés de lui, n'ont rien compris à ses voies,
so that they caused the outcry of the needy to reach him, and he heard the voice of the poor.28 jusqu'à faire monter vers lui le cri du faible, lui faire entendre l'appel des humbles.
For, when he grants peace, who is there that can condemn? When he hides his face, who is there that can contemplate him, either among the nations, or among all men?29 Mais s'il reste immobile sans que nul ne l'ébranle, s'il voile sa face sans se laisser apercevoir, c'estqu'il prend en pitié nations et individus,
He causes a hypocritical man to reign because of the sins of the people.30 délivre un impie des filets de l'affliction,
Therefore, since I have been speaking about God, I will not prevent you from doing the same.31 quand celui-ci dit à Dieu: "Je fus séduit, je ne ferai plus le mal;
If I have erred, you may teach me; if I have spoken unfairly, I will add no more.32 si j'ai péché, instruis-moi, si j'ai commis l'injustice, je ne recommencerai plus."
Does God require this of you because it is displeasing to you? For you were the first to speak, and not I. But if you know something better, speak.33 Est-ce que, d'après toi, il devrait punir, puisque tu rejettes ses décisions? Comme c'est toi qui choisiset non pas moi, fais-nous part de ta science.
Let men of understanding speak to me, and let a wise man listen to me.34 Mais les gens sensés me diront, ainsi que tout sage qui m'écoute:
But Job has been speaking foolishly, and his words contain unsound teaching.35 "Job ne parle pas avec science, ses propos manquent d'intelligence.
My father, let Job be tested even to the end; may you not retreat from a man of iniquity.36 Veuille donc l'examiner à fond, pour ses réponses dignes de celles des méchants.
For he adds blasphemy on top of his sins; nevertheless, let him be constrained to be among us, and then let him provoke God to judgment with his speeches.37 Car il ajoute à son péché la rébellion, met fin au droit parmi nous et multiplie contre Dieu sesparoles."
