1 Man, born of woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.	1 « L'uomo nato di donna vive poco tempo e pieno di molte miserie.
2 He comes forth like a flower, and is crushed, and he flees, as if a shadow, and never remains in the same state.	2 Come un fiore sboccia e secca, fugge qual ombra, senza mai fermarsi.
3 And do you consider it fitting to look down with your eyes on someone in this way and to lead him into judgment with you?	3 E tu stimi degno aprire i tuoi occhi sopra tal essere, e chiamarlo al tuo tribunale?
4 Who can make him clean who is conceived of unclean seed? Are you not the only one who can?	4 Chi può render puro colui che fu concepito d'immonda semenza? Non forse tu che sei l'unico?
5 The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with you; you have determined his limits, which cannot be surpassed.	5 I giorni dell'uomo son brevi, il numero dei suoi mesi è presso di te. Gli hai fissato un termine che non può essere oltrepassato.
6 Withdraw a little from him, so that he may rest, until his awaited day arrives, like that of the hired hand.	6 Ritirati un poco da lui e lascialo in pace, finché non venga, come quello d'un mercenario, il suo giorno bramato.
7 A tree has hope: if it has been cut, it turns green again, and its branches spring forth.	7 Per la pianta c'è una speranza: anche tagliata, rimette e ritorna ad avere i suoi rami;
8 If its roots grow old in the earth, and its trunk passes into dust,	8 ed anche quando sarà invecchiata sotto la terra la sua radico, quando il suo tronco sarà morto nella polvere,
9 at the scent of water, it will sprout and bring forth leaves, as when it had first been planted.	9 appena sente l'acqua rinverdisce e fa le fronde come pianta novella.
10 Truly, when a man dies, and has been left unprotected, and has decayed, I ask you where is he?	10 Ma l'uomo morto che sia, non ha più nulla. E' finito. Di grazia, che ne resta?
11 It is as if the waters had receded from the sea and an emptied river had dried up;	11 Simile alle acque sparite dal lago, al fiume che inaridisce e secca.
12 just so, when a man is fallen asleep, he will not rise again, until the heavens are worn away; he will not awaken, nor rise from his sleep.	12 L'uomo quando si sarà addormentato non risorgerà, finché non cada il cielo non si sveglierà, nè si scuoterà dal suo sonno.
13 Who will grant this to me, that you will protect me in the underworld, and hide me until your fury passes by, and establish a time for me, in which you will remember me?	13 Oh! potessi ottenere che tu mi seppellisca nell'Abisso, e mi faccia star laggiù nascosto finché non passi il tuo furore, finché tu non abbia fissato il giorno in cui ti ricorderai di me!
14 Do you suppose that a dead man will live again? On each of the days in which I now battle, I wait until my transformation occurs.	14 Pensi forse che l'uomo morto torni a vivere? Tutti i giorni del mio presente battagliare aspetto che venga il mio cambiamento.
15 You will call me and I will answer you; to the work of your hands, you will extend your right hand.	15 Allora mi chiamerai ed io risponderò, e tu porgerai la destra all'opera delle tue mani.
16 Indeed, you have numbered my steps, but you have been lenient with my sins.	16 Tu hai certamente contati i miei passi; ma perdona i miei peccati.
17 You have sealed up my offenses, as if in a purse, but you have cured my iniquity.	17 Tu hai sigillati come in un sacco i miei delitti, ma hai dato un rimedio alle mie iniquità.
18 A falling mountain flows away, and a stone is transferred from its place.	18 Il monte cade e sparisce, il masso è divelto dal suo posto,
19 Waters wear away stones, and with a flood the land is reduced little by little; and similarly, you will destroy man.	19 le acque scavan le pietre, la terra a poco a poco è portata via dalla inondazione, e così farai sparire anche l'uomo.
20 You have strengthened him for a little while, so that he may cross over into eternity. You will change his face and send him forth.	20 Gli darai per un po' di tempo il vigore, e lo farai passare per sempre, ne sfigurerai il volto, lo caccerai.
21 Whether his sons have been noble or ignoble, he will not understand.	21 Abbiano onori i suoi figli o siano dispregiati, egli non lo saprà;
22 And in this way his body, while he yet lives, will have grief, and his soul will mourn over himself.	22 ma la sua carne soffrirà finché egli avrà vita, ed egli piangerà sopra se stesso ».
