Job 14

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINBIBLES DES PEUPLES
Man, born of woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries.1 L’humain, né de la femme, sa vie est courte, et jamais sans problèmes.
He comes forth like a flower, and is crushed, and he flees, as if a shadow, and never remains in the same state.2 Comme la fleur il sort et puis se fane, comme l’ombre il court et jamais ne s’arrête.
And do you consider it fitting to look down with your eyes on someone in this way and to lead him into judgment with you?3 Et c’est sur lui que tu as l’œil ouvert, c’est lui que tu fais comparaître devant toi?
Who can make him clean who is conceived of unclean seed? Are you not the only one who can?4 Qui fera sortir le pur de l’impur? Personne!
The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with you; you have determined his limits, which cannot be surpassed.5 Puisque ses jours lui sont comptés, que de toi dépend le nombre de ses mois, et qu’il ne peut passer le terme fixé par toi,
Withdraw a little from him, so that he may rest, until his awaited day arrives, like that of the hired hand.6 alors: regarde ailleurs et laisse-le, comme un ouvrier, finir sa journée.
A tree has hope: if it has been cut, it turns green again, and its branches spring forth.7 Pour l’arbre il y a un espoir: on l’a coupé, il reprendra vie, il ne cessera de pousser des rejets.
If its roots grow old in the earth, and its trunk passes into dust,8 Sa racine peut vieillir en terre et son tronc mourir dans le sol,
at the scent of water, it will sprout and bring forth leaves, as when it had first been planted.9 rien qu’à l’odeur de l’eau il bourgeonne et comme un jeune plant il refait un feuillage.
Truly, when a man dies, and has been left unprotected, and has decayed, I ask you where is he?10 Mais l’homme aussitôt mort se défait: quand il a expiré, où voudrait-on qu’il soit?
It is as if the waters had receded from the sea and an emptied river had dried up;11 La mer pourrait perdre ses eaux, les fleuves se vider et rester secs,
just so, when a man is fallen asleep, he will not rise again, until the heavens are worn away; he will not awaken, nor rise from his sleep.12 celui qui gît ne se relèvera pas! Pas de réveil pour lui tant que durent les cieux, les humains ne sortiront pas de leur sommeil.
Who will grant this to me, that you will protect me in the underworld, and hide me until your fury passes by, and establish a time for me, in which you will remember me?13 14:14 S’il était possible qu’un mort revive,
Do you suppose that a dead man will live again? On each of the days in which I now battle, I wait until my transformation occurs.14 14:13 je voudrais que tu me gardes dans le monde d’en bas, que tu m’y caches, le temps que passe ta colère, et que tu fixes un jour pour te souvenir de moi. 14b Là-bas, tant que durerait mon service, j’attendrais l’heure de la relève,
You will call me and I will answer you; to the work of your hands, you will extend your right hand.15 Alors tu appellerais et je te répondrais, tu viendrais réclamer l’œuvre de tes mains.
Indeed, you have numbered my steps, but you have been lenient with my sins.16 Fini le temps où tu comptais tous mes pas: tu ne regarderais plus mes péchés,
You have sealed up my offenses, as if in a purse, but you have cured my iniquity.17 tu bouclerais ma faute dans un sac et blanchirais mes dettes.
A falling mountain flows away, and a stone is transferred from its place.18 Mais non! La montagne s’éboule, le rocher cède,
Waters wear away stones, and with a flood the land is reduced little by little; and similarly, you will destroy man.19 les eaux creusent les pierres, l’averse emporte les terres; et l’espoir de l’homme, tu l’enlèves!
You have strengthened him for a little while, so that he may cross over into eternity. You will change his face and send him forth.20 Tu le terrasses: c’est fini, il s’en est allé; tu le défigures et tu l’envoies au diable.
Whether his sons have been noble or ignoble, he will not understand.21 Si ses fils sont honorés, il ne le sait pas, s’ils sont méprisés, il n’en a nulle idée:
And in this way his body, while he yet lives, will have grief, and his soul will mourn over himself.22 il n’a de chagrin que pour son propre corps, il n’a plus d’autre deuil que le sien.
