CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Behold, my eye has seen all these things, and my ear has heard, and I have understood each one.1 Lo, all this my eye has seen; my ear has heard and perceived it.
In conformity with your knowledge, I also know. I am not inferior to you.2 What you know, I also know; I fall not short of you.
Yet I speak this way to the Almighty, and I desire to argue with God,3 But I would speak with the Almighty; I wish to reason with God.
having first shown that you fabricate lies and cultivate perverse teachings.4 You are glossing over falsehoods and offering vain remedies, every one of you!
And I wish that you would remain silent, so that you would be counted among the wise.5 Oh, that you would be altogether silent! This for you would be wisdom.
Therefore, listen to my correction, and pay attention to the judgment of my lips.6 Hear now the rebuke I shall utter and listen to the reproof from my lips.
Does God require your lie, so that you would speak deceitfully for him?7 Is it for God that you speak falsehood? Is it for him that you utter deceit?
Have you taken his place, and do you struggle to give judgment in favor of God?8 Is it for him that you show partiality? Do you play advocate on behalf of God?
Or, will it please him, from whom nothing can be concealed? Or, will he be deceived, like a man, by your deceitfulness?9 Will it be well when he shall search you out? Would you impose on him as one does on men?
He will accuse you because in secret you have preempted his presence.10 He will openly rebuke you if even in secret you show partiality.
As soon as he moves himself, he will disturb you, and his dread will fall over you.11 Surely will his majesty affright you and the dread of him fall upon you.
Your remembrance will be compared to ashes, and your necks will be reduced to clay.12 Your reminders are ashy maxims, your fabrications are mounds of clay.
Be silent for a little while, so that I may speak whatever my mind suggests to me.13 Be silent, let me alone! that I may speak and give vent to my feelings.
Why do I wound my flesh with my teeth, and carry my soul in my hands?14 I will carry my flesh between my teeth, and take my life in my hand.
And now, if he would kill me, I will hope in him; in this, truly, I will correct my ways in his sight.15 Slay me though he might, I will wait for him; I will defend my conduct before him.
And he will be my savior, for no hypocrite at all will approach in his sight.16 And this shall be my salvation, that no impious man can come into his presence.
Listen to my words, and perceive an enigma with your ears.17 Pay careful heed to my speech, and give my statement a hearing.
If I will be judged, I know that I will be found to be just.18 Behold, I have prepared my case, I know that I am in the right.
Who is it that will go to judgment with me? Let him approach. Why should I be consumed in silence?19 If anyone can make a case against me, then I shall be silent and die.
Do not do such things to me twice, and then I will not hide from your face.20 These things only do not use against me, then from your presence I need not hide:
Take your hand far away from me, and do not let your dread terrify me.21 Withdraw your hand far from me, and let not the terror of you frighten me.
Call me, and I will answer you, or else I will speak, and you can answer me.22 Then call me, and I will respond; or let me speak first, and answer me.
How many iniquities and sins do I have? Reveal my crimes and offenses to me.23 What are my faults and my sins? My misdeeds and my sins make known to me!
Why do you conceal your face and consider me to be your enemy?24 Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?
Against a leaf, which is carried away by the wind, you reveal your power, and you pursue dry straw.25 Will you harass a wind-driven leaf, or pursue a withered straw?
For you write bitter things against me, and you want to consume me for the sins of my youth.26 For you draw up bitter indictments against me, and punish in me the faults of my youth.
You have put my feet on a tether, and you have observed all my paths, and you have considered the steps of my feet.27 You put my feet in the stocks; you watch all my paths and trace out all my footsteps.
I will be left to decay like something rotten and like a garment that is being eaten by moths.28 Though he wears out like a leather bottle, like a garment that the moth has consumed?
