1 In the days of Artaxerxes, who reigned from India to Ethiopia over one hundred twenty-seven provinces,	1 E dopo questo il re Assuero esaltoe Aman figliuolo di Amadati, il quale era della stirpe di Agag; e fecelo grande sopra tutti gli altri prìncipi suoi.
2 when he sat on the throne of his kingdom, the city of Susa was the root of his kingdom.	2 Intanto che tutti (i principi e) i servi del re, li quali si riducevano al palazzo, così gli facevano reverenza come alla persona del re, però che il re avea così comandato; e Mardocheo giammai non gli volse fare riverenza.
3 And so, in the third year of his reign, he made a great feast for all the leaders and his servants, for the most powerful among the Persians and the distinguished among the Medes, and for the rulers of the provinces before him,	3 E avvedèndosene di questo, gli altri servi, i quali soprastavano alle porte del palazzo, sì dissono a Mardocheo: perchè tu solo non ubbidisci i comandamenti del re (cioè di fare reverenza ad Aman)?
4 so that he might show the glorious riches of his kingdom, as well as its greatness, and so boast of his power, for a long time, namely, one hundred and eighty days.	4 E (di queste parole Mardocheo se ne fece beffe, e) dicendoli molte volte simili parole, Mardocheo non li volea udire; e loro il dissono ad Aman per vedere se Mardocheo solo avesse in contemto il comandamento del re; e lui disse loro, che egli era Giudeo.
5 And when the days of the feast were nearly completed, he invited all the people, who had been found in Susa, from the greatest even to the least, and he commanded a feast to be prepared, for seven days, in the court of the garden and the arboretum, which had been planted by the care and by the hand of the king.	5 E Aman udendo questo (stettene in sè, e) vidde ch' era così, che Mardocheo non s' inginocchiava a lui nè lo adorava; onde si turbò molto incontro di lui.
6 And, in every direction, tents the color of the sky and of flax as well as hyacinth were hung up, suspended by cords of linen and even purple, which had been placed through rings of ivory and were held up with marble columns. The couches also, of gold and silver, had been arranged over a pavement of emerald-green, bearing scattered jewels, which was decorated with a wonderful variety of images.	6 E non fece conto Aman di poner le mani sue sopra Mardocheo che era uno uomo solo, (ma domandò incontanente di che gente ch' egli era), e fugli detto com'era Giudeo; e Aman immaginava in che modo potesse fare, ch' egli il potesse fare morire lui con tutti i Giudei i quali erano nel reame d' Assuero re.
7 Moreover, those who had been invited drank from golden cups, and dishes of foods were brought in one after another. Likewise, choice wine was presented in abundance, as was worthy of royal magnificence.	7 Nel primo mese, che si chiama Nisan (cioè aprile), nel XII anno che regnava il re Assuero, in presenza di Aman fu data la sorte, e fu determinato in che dì e mese (Mardocheo con) tutti i Giudei dovessono essere morti; e uscì la sorte, che nel duodecimo mese, chiamato Adar (cioè marzo).
8 Nor was anyone compelled to drink who was unwilling, but, just as the king had appointed, one of his nobles was set over each table, so that each one might select what he wanted.	8 E andò Aman al re (nel duodecimo mese, che si chiamava Adar), e dissegli: signore, uno popolo è disperso tra la tua gente, il quale popolo tiene leggi per sè con nuovi costumi, e le nostre leggi non osservano, facendosi beffe de' tuoi comandamenti; e tu sai bene che il regno tuo non ha bisogno di tal gente.
9 Likewise, Vashti the queen made a feast for the women, in the palace where king Artaxerxes was accustomed to stay the night.	9 E perciò, se ti piace, dàmmi lettera, ch' io li faccia morire; e io ti profero ch' io metterò nella tua tesauraria X milia talenti.
10 And so, on the seventh day, when the king was more cheerful, and, after excessive drinking, had become warmed with wine, he ordered Mehuman, and Biztha, and Harbona, and Bigtha, and Abagtha, and Zethar, and Charkas, seven eunuchs who served in his presence,	10 Allora diede lo re ad Aman, figliuolo di Amadati della stirpe di Agag, perseguitator del popolo Giudeo, l' anello suo (secreto) col quale sigillava
11 to bring in queen Vashti before the king, with the crown set upon her head, to show her beauty to the whole people and to the leaders, for she was very beautiful.	11 E dissegli lo ariento che tu hai promesso sia tuo; e del popolo fa quello che ti pare.
12 She refused, and she showed contempt towards the king’s command, which he had delivered to her by the eunuchs. Whereupon the king, being angry and inflamed with a very great fury,	12 E Aman fece chiamare li scrittori del re, e questo a' di XIII del mese primo che si chiamava Nisan (cioè aprile); e scrissono tutto ciò che Aman comandò a tutti i prìncipi e giudici e vicari e chiunque avea alcuna signoria nel reame del re Assuero; Ed erano scritte [le lettere] in chiascheduna lingua, da parte del re Assuero, acciò che ciascuno le potesse leggere e intendere, ciascheduno la sua, per la varietà delle lingue. Mandò queste lettere da sua parte, sigillate col sigillo secreto,
13 questioned the wise men, who, according to royal custom were always near him and all he did was by their counsel, who knew the laws as well as the judgments of their ancestors,	13 che dovessero dare morte a tutti i Giudei, grandi e piccoli, maschi e femine, in uno dì; e questo (fecero) a dì XIII del decimo mese che si chiamava Adar (cioè marzo), e tutti i loro beni pigliassero.
14 (but first and foremost were Carshena, and Shethar, and Admatha, and Tarshish, and Meres, and Marsena, and Memucan, seven rulers of the Persians as well as the Medes, who saw the face of the king and who were accustomed to sitting down first after him,)	14 La sentenza delle lettere sì era in questo modo che ogni uomo si provvedesse d' essere apparecchiato in quello dì (dare morte a' Giudei),
15 and he sent letters to all the provinces of his kingdom, so that every nation was able to hear and to read, in various languages and letters, that husbands are to be the greater rulers in their own houses, and that this should be published to every people.	15 e che dovessero (di provincia in provincia) affrettare i corrieri d'adempiere lo comandamento del re (sì che fossero in ogni paese anzi tempo). E in Susa si pose incontanente il sugello pendente col privilegio. Il re e Aman istavano in grandi e belli conviti; e tutti i Giudei, ch' erano in Susa, erano in grande (tristizia e) pianto.
