1 Simon apprit que Tryphon avait réuni une grande armée pour aller ravager le pays de Juda.	1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.
2 Voyant que le peuple tremblait d'épouvante, il monta à Jérusalem, rassembla le peuple	2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people:
3 qu'il exhorta en ces termes: "Vous n'êtes pas sans savoir tout ce que moi, mes frères et lamaison de mon père avons fait pour les lois et le saint lieu, ainsi que les guerres et les tribulations que nousavons vues.	3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:
4 C'est bien pour cela que tous mes frères ont péri, oui, pour la cause d'Israël, et que moi jesuis resté tout seul.	4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.
5 Maintenant, loin de moi d'épargner ma vie en aucun temps d'oppression! car je ne suis pasmeilleur que mes frères.	5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren.
6 Mais plutôt je vengerai ma nation, le lieu saint, vos femmes et vos enfants, parce que toutesles nations se sont coalisées pour nous anéantir, poussées par la haine."	6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.
7 A ces paroles, l'esprit du peuple se ralluma;	7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words.
8 ils répondirent d'une voix forte: "Tu es notre guide à la place de Judas et de Jonathan, tonfrère;	8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother.
9 prends la direction de notre guerre et tout ce que tu nous diras, nous le ferons."	9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.
10 Il rassembla tous les hommes aptes au combat, se hâta d'achever les murs de Jérusalem etla fortifia.	10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
11 Il envoya à Joppé Jonathan, fils d'Absalom, avec une troupe importante; celui-ci en chassales habitants et s'y établit.	11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.
12 Tryphon partit de Ptolémaïs avec une nombreuse armée pour entrer dans le pays de Juda,ayant avec lui Jonathan prisonnier.	12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.
13 Simon vint alors camper à Adida, en face de la plaine.	13 But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain.
14 Tryphon, ayant appris que Simon avait remplacé son frère Jonathan et qu'il était sur lepoint d'engager la lutte avec lui-même, lui dépêcha des messagers pour lui dire:	14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,
15 "C'est au sujet de l'argent que ton frère Jonathan doit au trésor royal, à raison des fonctionsqu'il remplissait, que nous le tenons captif.	15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.
16 Envoie donc maintenant cent talents d'argent et deux de ses fils en otages, de peur qu'unefois relâché il ne se rebelle contre nous; alors nous le laisserons aller."	16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him.
17 Simon, bien qu'il connût la fausseté des paroles que lui adressaient les messagers, envoyaprendre l'argent et les enfants, de peur de s'attirer une grande inimitié de la part du peuple qui aurait dit:	17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:
18 "C'est parce que je n'ai pas envoyé l'argent et les enfants que Jonathan a péri."	18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost.
19 Il envoya donc les enfants et les cent talents, mais Tryphon le trompa en ne renvoyant pasJonathan.	19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.
20 Après cela, Tryphon se mit en marche pour envahir le pays et le ravager; il fit un détourpar le chemin d'Adôra: Simon et son armée lui faisaient obstacle partout où il passait.	20 And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.
21 Cependant ceux de la Citadelle dépêchaient à Tryphon des messagers le pressant de venirchez eux par le désert et de leur faire parvenir des vivres.	21 And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals.
22 Tryphon disposa alors toute sa cavalerie pour y aller, mais dans cette nuit-là il tomba uneneige si abondante qu'il ne put s'y rendre. Il partit de là et se rendit en Galaaditide.	22 And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad.
23 Aux approches de Baskama, il tua Jonathan, qui fut enseveli en ce lieu.	23 And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there.
24 Tryphon, s'en retournant, regagna son pays.	24 And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country.
25 Simon envoya recueillir les ossements de Jonathan, son frère, et il l'ensevelit à Modîn, villede ses pères.	25 And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers.
26 Tout Israël mena sur lui un grand deuil et se lamenta durant de longs jours.	26 And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days.
27 Simon bâtit sur la sépulture de son père et de ses frères un monument de pierres polies tantpar derrière qu'en façade, assez haut pour être vu.	27 And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before:
28 Il érigea sept pyramides, l'une en face de l'autre, à son père, à sa mère et à ses quatre frères.	28 And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren:
29 Il les entoura d'un ouvrage consistant en hautes colonnes surmontées de panoplies, pour unsouvenir éternel, et, à côté des panoplies, de vaisseaux sculptés pour être vus par tous ceux qui naviguent sur lamer.	29 And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea.
30 Tel est le mausolée qu'il fit à Modîn, et qui existe encore aujourd'hui.	30 This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day.
31 Or Tryphon, usant de perfidie avec le jeune roi Antiochus, le mit à mort.	31 But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him.
32 Il régna à sa place, ceignit le diadème de l'Asie et fit beaucoup de mal dans le pays.	32 And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land.
33 Quant à Simon, il rebâtit les forteresses de Judée, les entoura de hautes tours et de mursélevés munis de portes et de verrous et, dans ces forteresses, il entreposa des vivres.	33 And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses.
34 En outre, Simon désigna des hommes qu'il envoya au roi Démétrius pour que celui-ciaccordât rémission à la province, parce que tous les actes de Tryphon n'étaient que rapines.	34 And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil.
35 Le roi Démétrius envoya une réponse à sa demande dans une lettre libellée comme suit:	35 And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner:
36 "Le roi Démétrius à Simon, grand prêtre, ami des rois, aux anciens et à la nation des Juifs,salut.	36 King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting.
37 Nous avons agréé la couronne d'or et la palme que vous nous avez envoyées et noussommes disposés à faire avec vous une paix complète et à écrire aux fonctionnaires de vous accorder desremises.	37 The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released.
38 Tout ce que nous avons statué à votre égard reste stable, et les forteresses que vous avezconstruites sont à vous.	38 For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own.
39 Nous vous remettons les erreurs et les manquements commis jusqu'à ce jour ainsi que lacouronne que vous devez, et si quelque autre droit était perçu à Jérusalem, qu'il ne soit plus exigé.	39 And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed.
40 Si quelques-uns d'entre vous étaient aptes à s'enrôler dans notre garde du corps, qu'ils sefassent inscrire et que la paix soit faite entre nous."	40 And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us.
41 L'an 170 le joug des nations fut ôté d'Israël,	41 In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel.
42 et le peuple commença à écrire sur les actes et les contrats: "En la première année sousSimon, grand prêtre éminent, stratège et higoumène des Juifs."	42 And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews.
43 En ces jours-là, Simon vint mettre le siège devant Gazara et l'investir avec ses troupes. Ilconstruisit une tour roulante, la fit donner contre la ville, ouvrit une brèche dans l'un des bastions et s'en empara.	43 In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it.
44 Ceux qui étaient dans la tour sautèrent dans la place, ce qui y produisit une agitationconsidérable.	44 And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city.
45 Les habitants de la ville avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants montèrent sur le rempart et,déchirant leurs vêtements, ils demandèrent à grands cris à Simon de faire la paix avec eux:	45 And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.
46 "Ne nous traite pas, dirent-ils, selon notre méchanceté, mais selon ta miséricorde."	46 And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy.
47 Simon fit un arrangement avec eux et ne les combattit pas. Seulement, il les chassa de laville, purifia les maisons dans lesquelles il y avait des idoles, et alors il y entra au chant des hymnes et desbénédictions.	47 And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord.
48 Il en bannit toute impureté, y établit des hommes qui pratiquaient la Loi et, l'ayant fortifiée,il s'y bâtit pour lui-même une résidence.	48 And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.
49 Quant à ceux de la Citadelle à Jérusalem, ils étaient empêchés de sortir et de se rendre à lacampagne, d'acheter et de vendre: ils eurent terriblement faim et nombre d'entre eux furent emportés par lafamine.	49 But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine.
50 Ils demandèrent avec cris à Simon de faire la paix avec eux, ce qu'il leur accorda. Il leschassa de là et purifia la Citadelle de toute souillure.	50 And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses.
51 Les Juifs y firent leur entrée le 23 du deuxième mois de l'an 171, avec des acclamations etdes palmes, au son des lyres, des cymbales et des harpes, au chant des hymnes et des cantiques, parce qu'ungrand ennemi avait été brisé et jeté hors d'Israël.	51 And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel.
52 Simon ordonna de célébrer chaque année ce jour-là avec jubilation. Il fortifia la montagnedu sanctuaire du côté de la Citadelle et y habita lui et les siens.	52 And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness.
53 Simon vit que Jean, son fils, était vraiment un homme; aussi l'établit-il chef de toutes lesforces; il résidait à Gazara.	53 And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him.
	54 And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara.
