DOUAI-RHEIMS | NEW AMERICAN BIBLE |
---|---|
If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. | 1 If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. |
And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. | 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. |
And if I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. | 3 If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. |
Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; | 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, |
Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; | 5 it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, |
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth; | 6 it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. |
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. | 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. |
Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed. | 8 Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. |
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. | 9 For we know partially and we prophesy partially, |
But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away. | 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. |
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child. | 11 When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. |
We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know I part; but then I shall know even as I am known. | 12 At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. |
And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity. | 13 So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. |
