DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaias the prophet: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare the way before thee.2 It is written in the prophet Isaiah: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you to prepare yourway before you.
A voice of one crying in the desert: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.3 A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
John was in the desert baptizing, and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins.4 John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptized by him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.5 All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him inthe river Jordan they confessed their sins.
And John was clothed with camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey.6 John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.
And he preached, saying: There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.7 In the course of his preaching he said, 'After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, andI am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water; but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.8 I have baptised you with water, but he wil baptise you with the Holy Spirit.'
And it came to pass, in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.9 It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John.
And forthwith coming up out of he water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit as a dove descending, and remaining on him.10 And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, likea dove, descending on him.
And there came a voice from heaven: Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.11 And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.'
And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the desert.12 And at once the Spirit drove him into the desert
And he was in the desert forty days and forty nights, and was tempted by Satan; and he was with beasts, and the angels ministered to him.13 and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.
And after that John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,14 After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the gospel from Godsaying,
And saying: The time is accomplished, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel.15 'The time is fulfil ed, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.'
And passing by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother, casting nets into the sea (for they were fishermen).16 As he was walking along by the Lake of Galilee he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting anet in the lake -- for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them: Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.17 And Jesus said to them, 'Come after me and I will make you into fishers of people.'
And immediately leaving their nets, they followed him.18 And at once they left their nets and fol owed him.
And going on from thence a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were mending their nets in the ship:19 Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in theirboat, mending the nets.
And forthwith he called them. And leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with his hired men, they followed him.20 At once he called them and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, theywent after him.
And they entered into Capharnaum, and forthwith upon the sabbath days going into the synagogue, he taught them.21 They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and beganto teach.
And they were astonished at his doctrine. For he was teaching them as one having power, and not as the scribes.22 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them withauthority.
And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,23 And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted,
Saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, the Holy One of God.24 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are:the Holy One of God.'
And Jesus threatened him, saying: Speak no more, and go out of the man.25 But Jesus rebuked it saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!'
And the unclean spirit tearing him, and crying out with a loud voice, went out of him.26 And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.
And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying: What thing is this? what is this new doctrine? for with power he commandeth even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.27 The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it al meant, saying, 'Here isa teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.'
And the fame of him was spread forthwith into all the country of Galilee.28 And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.
And immediately going out of the synagogue they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.29 And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simonand Andrew.
And Simon's wife's mother lay in a fit of a fever: and forthwith they tell him of her.30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.
And coming to her, he lifted her up, taking her by the hand; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.31 He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began toserve them.
And when it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all that were ill and that were possessed with devils.32 That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed bydevils.
And all the city was gathered together at the door.33 The whole town came crowding round the door,
And he healed many that were troubled with divers diseases; and he cast out many devils, and he suffered them not to speak, because they knew him.34 and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out manydevils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
And rising very early, going out, he went into a desert place: and there he prayed.35 In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place andprayed there.
And Simon, and they that were with him, followed after him.36 Simon and his companions set out in search of him,
And when they had found him, they said to him: All seek for thee.37 and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'
And he saith to them: Let us go into the neighbouring towns and cities, that I may preach there also; for to this purpose am I come.38 He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim themessage there too, because that is why I came.'
And he was preaching in their synagogues, and in all Galilee, and casting out devils.39 And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.
And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down said to him: If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.40 A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you arewil ing, you can cleanse me.'
And Jesus having compassion on him, stretched forth his hand; and touching him, saith to him: I will. Be thou made clean.41 Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Becleansed.'
And when he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was made clean.42 And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed.
And he strictly charged him, and forthwith sent him away.43 And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him,
And he saith to him: See thou tell no one; but go, shew thyself to the high priest, and offer for thy cleansing the things that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.44 'Mind you tel no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for yourcleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.'
But he being gone out, began to publish and to blaze abroad the word: so that he could not openly go into the city, but was without in desert places: and they flocked to him from all sides.45 The man went away, but then started freely proclaiming and tel ing the story everywhere, so thatJesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from alaround kept coming to him.
