1 Après avoir donné tout cet enseignement au peuple, Jésus rentra à Capharnaüm.	1 And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
2 Le serviteur d’un officier était si malade qu’il était sur le point de mourir; or cet officier l’estimait beaucoup.	2 Now the servant of a certain centurion was dying, due to an illness. And he was very dear to him.
3 Comme il avait entendu parler de Jésus, il envoya vers lui quelques Juifs importants pour lui demander de venir guérir son serviteur.	3 And when he had heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him, petitioning him, so that he would come and heal his servant.
4 Arrivés près de Jésus, ceux-ci insistent: "Il mérite que tu fasses cela pour lui,	4 And when they had come to Jesus, they petitioned him anxiously, saying to him: “He is worthy that you should provide this to him.
5 car il aime notre nation et c’est lui qui nous a construit la synagogue.”	5 For he loves our nation, and he has built a synagogue for us.”
6 Jésus part donc avec eux. Quand déjà il n’est plus loin de la maison, l’officier envoie d’autres amis pour lui dire: "Ne prenez pas tant de peine! Qui suis-je pour que vous veniez sous mon toit?	6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying: “Lord, do not trouble yourself. For I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.
7 C’est pourquoi déjà je n’ai pas voulu aller moi-même vous chercher. “Dites seulement une parole et mon serviteur sera guéri!	7 Because of this, I also did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 J’ai beau n’être qu’un subalterne, j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres et quand je dis à l’un: ‘Va!’ il va. À un autre je dis: ‘Viens!’, et il vient, et à mon serviteur: ‘Fais cela’, et il le fait.”	8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 En l’entendant parler ainsi, Jésus était dans l’admiration. Il se tourna alors vers la foule qui le suivait et déclara: "Je vous le dis: même en Israël je n’ai pas rencontré une telle foi!”	9 And upon hearing this, Jesus was amazed. And turning to the multitude following him, he said, “Amen I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
10 Les envoyés s’en revinrent à la maison, ce fut pour y trouver le serviteur en parfaite santé.	10 And those who had been sent, upon returning to the house, found that the servant, who had been sick, was now healthy.
11 Un peu plus tard Jésus se rendit dans une ville appelée Naïm. Ses disciples faisaient route avec lui, c’était toute une troupe.	11 And it happened afterwards that he went to a city, which is called Nain. And his disciples, and an abundant crowd, went with him.
12 Comme il approchait de la porte de la ville, voici qu’on emportait pour l’enterrer, un fils unique dont la mère était veuve. Les gens de la ville, en grand nombre, l’accompagnaient.	12 Then, when he had drawn near to the gate of the city, behold, a deceased person was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.
13 À sa vue le Seigneur eut pitié d’elle; il lui dit: "Ne pleure pas.”	13 And when the Lord had seen her, being moved by mercy over her, he said to her, “Do not weep.”
14 Puis il s’approcha et toucha le brancard: les porteurs s’arrêtèrent. Jésus dit alors: "Jeune homme je te parle: Lève-toi!”	14 And he drew near and touched the coffin. Then those who carried it stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
15 Et voici que le mort se redresse, s’assoit et commence à parler. Et Jésus le rend à sa mère.	15 And the dead youth sat up and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.
16 Une crainte religieuse saisit toute l’assistance; ils louaient Dieu en ces termes: "Un grand prophète s’est levé parmi nous: Dieu a visité son peuple!”	16 Then fear fell over all of them. And they magnified God, saying: “For a great prophet has risen up among us,” and, “For God has visited his people.”
17 C’est cela même qu’on entendait dire de lui par tout le pays des Juifs aussi bien que dans les régions voisines.	17 And this word about him went out to all of Judea and to the entire surrounding region.
18 Les disciples de Jean-Baptiste le tenaient au courant de tous ces événements. Il appela deux de ses disciples	18 And the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.
19 et les envoya au Seigneur pour lui dire: "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?”	19 And John called two of his disciples, and he sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or should we wait for another?”
20 Lorsque ces hommes arrivèrent près de Jésus, ils lui dirent: "Jean-Baptiste nous envoie vers toi pour te demander: Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?”	20 But when the men had come to him, they said: “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying: ‘Are you he who is to come, or should we wait for another?’ ”
21 À ce moment même Jésus rendit la santé à bien des gens affligés de maladies, d’infirmités et d’esprits mauvais; et il redonna la vue à plusieurs aveugles.	21 Now in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases and wounds and evil spirits; and to many of the blind, he gave sight.
22 Puis il répondit aux envoyés: "Repartez dire à Jean ce que vous venez de voir et d’entendre: les aveugles retrouvent la vue, les éclopés marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts se réveillent et les pauvres entendent une bonne nouvelle.	22 And responding, he said to them: “Go and report to John what you have heard and seen: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor are evangelized.
23 Mais heureux particulièrement celui qui me voit si ce n’est pas pour sa chute!”	23 And blessed is anyone who has not taken offense at me.”
24 Lorsque les envoyés de Jean furent partis, Jésus commença à parler de Jean à la foule: "Que cherchiez-vous à voir quand vous alliez au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?	24 And when the messengers of John had withdrawn, he began to speak about John to the crowds. “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25 Qu’alliez-vous voir? Un homme avec des habits douillets? Mais ceux qui portent des habits douillets et font les bons repas se trouvent dans les palais des rois!	25 Then what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who are in costly apparel and finery are in the houses of kings.
26 Alors, qu’alliez-vous voir? Un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu’un prophète!	26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Certainly, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27 Car c’est de lui qu’il est écrit: J’envoie mon messager devant toi pour qu’il te prépare le chemin.	27 This is he of whom it is written: “Behold, I send my Angel before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.”
28 “Oui, je vous le dis, personne n’est plus grand que Jean parmi les fils de la femme. Et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui.	28 For I say to you, among those born of women, no one is greater than the prophet John the Baptist. But he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 “Tout le peuple est venu l’entendre, même les collecteurs de l’impôt: ils ont confessé leurs fautes et reçu le baptême de Jean.	29 And upon hearing this, all the people and the tax collectors justified God, by being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 Et quand les Pharisiens et les maîtres de la Loi ne se sont pas fait baptiser par lui, ils ont dit non à ce que Dieu leur demandait.	30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law despised the counsel of God concerning themselves, by not being baptized by him.
31 “Comment donc vais-je dépeindre les hommes de la présente génération?	31 Then the Lord said: “Therefore, to what shall I compare the men of this generation? And to what are they similar?
32 Ils font penser à des gamins assis sur la place; un groupe interpelle les autres: ‘Nous avons joué de la flûte pour vous et vous n’avez pas dansé. Et quand nous avons fait la lamentation, vous n’avez pas pleuré!’	32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace, talking with one another, and saying: ‘We sang to you, and you did not dance. We lamented, and you did not weep.’
33 “Rappelez-vous Jean; il ne mangeait pas de pain, il ne buvait pas de vin, et quand il est venu on a dit: ‘Il a un démon.’	33 For John the Baptist came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
34 Et puis vient le Fils de l’Homme qui mange et qui boit, et l’on dit: ‘Voilà un mangeur et un buveur de vin, un ami des collecteurs de l’impôt et des pécheurs!’	34 The Son of man came, eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a voracious man and a drinker of wine, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners.’
35 Mais les enfants de la Sagesse savent qu’elle a bien agi.”	35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
36 Un Pharisien avait invité Jésus à manger chez lui. Il entra dans la maison du Pharisien et s’allongea pour le repas.	36 Then certain Pharisees petitioned him, so that they might eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and he reclined at table.
37 Or dans cette ville il y avait une femme connue comme pécheresse. Sachant que Jésus était à table dans la maison du Pharisien, elle se procura un vase précieux rempli de parfum.	37 And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner, found out that he was reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, so she brought an alabaster container of ointment.
38 Elle se tenait en arrière, aux pieds de Jésus, et elle pleurait. Bientôt ses larmes commencèrent à inonder les pieds de Jésus. De ses cheveux elle les essuyait et les embrassait longuement puis elle y versait du parfum.	38 And standing behind him, beside his feet, she began to wash his feet with tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and she kissed his feet, and she anointed them with ointment.
39 En voyant cela, le Pharisien qui l’avait invité se dit en lui-même: "Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait que celle qui le touche est une pécheresse; il connaîtrait cette femme et comment elle est”.	39 Then the Pharisee, who had invited him, upon seeing this, spoke within himself, saying, “This man, if he were a prophet, would certainly know who and what kind of woman is this, who is touching him: that she is a sinner.”
40 Jésus prend alors la parole et lui dit: "Simon, j’ai quelque chose à te dire.” Et celui-ci de répondre: "Parle, maître!”	40 And in response, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Speak, Teacher.”
41 Jésus reprend: "Un homme a prêté de l’argent à deux clients, l’un lui doit 500 pièces d’argent, l’autre 50.	41 “A certain creditor had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 Comme aucun des deux n’a de quoi lui rendre, il efface leurs dettes à tous les deux. Lequel, à ton avis l’aimera davantage?”	42 And since they did not have the ability to repay him, he forgave them both. So then, which of them loves him more?”
43 Simon répond: "Je suppose que c’est celui qui avait la plus grande dette.” Jésus lui dit: "Tu as bien jugé!”	43 In response, Simon said, “I suppose that it is he to whom he forgave the most.” And he said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
44 Et se tournant vers la femme, il dit à Simon: "Tu vois cette femme. Je suis entré chez toi et tu ne m’as pas versé d’eau sur les pieds, mais elle, elle les a inondés de ses larmes et les a essuyés de ses cheveux.	44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon: “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You gave me no water for my feet. But she has washed my feet with tears, and has wiped them with her hair.
45 Tu ne m’as pas embrassé; mais depuis qu’elle est entrée, elle n’a pas cessé de m’embrasser longuement les pieds.	45 You gave no kiss to me. But she, from the time that she entered, has not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 Tu ne m’as pas parfumé la tête, alors qu’elle a couvert mes pieds de parfum.	46 You did not anoint my head with oil. But she has anointed my feet with ointment.
47 “C’est pourquoi, je te le dis, ses péchés, ses nombreux péchés lui sont pardonnés, parce qu’elle a beaucoup aimé! Mais celui à qui l’on pardonne peu montre peu d’amour!”	47 Because of this, I tell you: many sins are forgiven her, because she has loved much. But he who is forgiven less, loves less.”
48 Jésus dit alors à la femme: "Tes péchés sont pardonnés!”	48 Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven you.”
49 Et les invités commencèrent à se dire les uns aux autres: "Comment peut-il maintenant pardonner les péchés?”	49 And those who sat at table with him began to say within themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”
50 Mais de nouveau Jésus s’adressa à la femme: "Ta foi t’a sauvée, va en paix.”	50 Then he said to the woman: “Your faith has brought you salvation. Go in peace.”
