1 Simon apprit que Tryphon avait réuni une grande armée pour envahir le pays de Juda et le dévaster.	1 Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,
2 Comme il voyait que le peuple avait peur, que c’était la panique, il monta à Jérusalem et réunit le peuple.	2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,
3 Il l’encouragea par ces mots: “Vous savez tout ce que mes frères, moi-même et toute la maison de mon père, nous avons fait pour nos lois et notre religion. Vous savez les combats et les épreuves que nous avons connus.	3 And gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen.
4 Tous mes frères y ont laissé la vie pour Israël et je reste seul;	4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.
5 mais que Dieu me garde de me mettre à l’abri en un temps d’épreuves, car ma vie ne vaut pas plus que celle de mes frères.	5 Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.
6 Puisque toutes les nations qui nous haïssent se sont réunies pour nous détruire, je ferai justice à mon peuple, au Temple, à nos femmes et à nos enfants.”	6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.
7 En entendant ces paroles, l’esprit du peuple se réveilla;	7 Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.
8 ils répondirent par de grandes acclamations: “Tu seras notre chef à la place de Judas et de ton frère Jonathan!	8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.
9 Mène-nous au combat et nous ferons tout ce que tu nous diras!”	9 Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever, thou commandest us, that will we do.
10 Alors Simon rassembla tous les hommes de guerre. Rapidement il termina les remparts de Jérusalem et fortifia tout le tour de la ville.	10 So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
11 Puis il envoya à Joppé Jonathan fils d’Absalom avec une puissante armée; celui-ci en chassa tous les habitants et s’installa dans la ville.	11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absolom, and with him a great power, to Joppa: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.
12 Tryphon quitta Ptolémaïs avec une puissante armée pour envahir le pays de Juda; il emmenait avec lui Jonathan prisonnier.	12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaus with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.
13 Simon, de son côté, installa son camp à Adida, en face de la plaine.	13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.
14 Lorsque Tryphon apprit que Simon avait pris le commandement à la place de son frère Jonathan et qu’il était prêt à le combattre, il lui envoya des messagers:	14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,
15 “Nous retenons ton frère Jonathan prisonnier, dirent-ils, à cause de l’argent qu’il doit au trésor royal comme haut-fonctionnaire.	15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.
16 Envoie donc 100 talents d’argent et deux de ses fils comme otages pour que, une fois libre, il ne nous échappe pas; alors nous lui rendrons la liberté.”	16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.
17 Simon voyait bien que leurs paroles n’étaient pas sincères; il envoya cependant l’argent et les deux jeunes enfants pour ne pas attirer sur lui la colère du peuple, car on aurait pu dire ensuite:	17 Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:
18 “C’est parce qu’il n’a pas envoyé l’argent et les enfants que Jonathan est mort.”	18 Who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.
19 Il envoya donc les enfants et les 100 talents d’argent, mais Tryphon ne tint pas sa promesse et il ne relâcha pas Jonathan.	19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled neither would he let Jonathan go.
20 Tryphon s’avança alors pour envahir le pays et le ravager; il fit un détour, prenant le chemin d’Adora, mais Simon et son armée lui faisaient obstacle partout où il allait.	20 And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.
21 Les hommes de la Citadelle envoyèrent des messagers à Tryphon pour le supplier de venir rapidement par le désert et de leur apporter des vivres.	21 Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.
22 Tryphon disposa toute sa cavalerie pour y aller, mais cette nuit-là il y eut une forte chute de neige et la neige l’empêcha d’y aller. Il leva le camp et repartit pour Galaad.	22 Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.
23 Avant d’arriver à Baskama, il fit tuer Jonathan qui fut enterré en cet endroit.	23 And when he came near to Bascama he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 Puis Tryphon s’en retourna pour regagner son pays.	24 Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.
25 Simon envoya prendre les ossements de son frère Jonathan et les ensevelit à Modine dans la ville de ses pères.	25 Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.
26 Tout Israël fit sur lui un grand deuil et on le pleura durant de nombreux jours.	26 And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.
27 Simon fit construire un monument sur la tombe de son père et de ses frères; il était fait de pierres polies par devant et par derrière, et suffisamment haut pour être vu de loin.	27 Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.
28 Il fit dresser sept pyramides qui se faisaient face, pour son père, sa mère et ses quatre frères,	28 Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.
29 afin de garder à jamais leur souvenir. Il fit garnir ces pyramides d’un cercle de hautes colonnes surmontées d’armures, et à côté des armures il fit sculpter des navires que pourraient apprécier tous ceux qui naviguent sur la mer.	29 And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.
30 Tel est jusqu’à ce jour le monument que Simon fit construire à Modine.	30 This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.
31 Tryphon menait un double jeu avec le jeune roi Antiocus: il le tua	31 Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.
32 et régna à sa place. Il prit la couronne des rois d’Asie et fit beaucoup de tort au pays.	32 And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.
33 Simon reconstruisit les forteresses de Judée, il les garnit de hautes tours, de remparts élevés, de portes et de verrous, et il y mit de la nourriture en réserve.	33 Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.
34 Par ailleurs, Simon choisit des hommes qu’il envoya au roi Démétrius pour qu’il accorde des remises d’impôts au pays, car Tryphon ne faisait que brigandage sur brigandage.	34 Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.
35 Le roi Démétrius répondit à sa demande par cette lettre:	35 Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:
36 “Le roi Démétrius salue Simon, grand prêtre et ami des rois, les anciens et la nation des Juifs!	36 King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:
37 Nous avons reçu la couronne d’or et la palme que vous nous avez envoyées, nous sommes prêts à faire avec vous une paix totale et à écrire aux percepteurs royaux pour qu’ils vous fassent différentes remises.	37 The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.
38 Tous nos engagements envers vous sont fermes, les forteresses que vous avez construites sont à vous.	38 And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.
39 Nous voulons oublier tous les manquements et les offenses commises jusqu’à ce jour ainsi que la taxe royale que vous nous deviez, et si par hasard on percevait quelque autre impôt à Jérusalem, qu’il ne soit plus perçu.	39 As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.
40 S’il y a parmi vous des gens disposés à s’engager dans notre garde personnelle, qu’il s’y engage et que la paix règne entre nous.”	40 And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let then be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.
41 C’est ainsi que le joug des nations qui pesait sur Israël fut enlevé en l’an 170.	41 Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.
42 Le peuple d’Israël commença à dater ainsi ses actes et ses contrats: “En la première année de Simon, grand prêtre éminent, général et gouverneur des Juifs.”	42 Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.
43 En ce temps-là Simon marcha sur Gaza et la fit assiéger par ses troupes; il construisit des tours roulantes et les plaça pour attaquer la ville; à partir d’une de ces tours, il fit une brèche et s’en rendit maître.	43 In those days Simon camped against Gaza and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.
44 Ceux qui étaient dans la tour roulante sautèrent dans la ville et y jetèrent la panique:	44 And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:
45 les habitants, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, montèrent sur les remparts, les vêtements déchirés et poussant de grands cris, demandant à Simon de leur accorder la paix.	45 Insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.
46 Ils lui disaient: “Ne nous traite pas selon notre méchanceté mais selon ta miséricorde!”	46 And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.
47 Simon eut pitié d’eux: il arrêta le combat, mais il chassa les habitants de la ville, il purifia les maisons dans lesquelles se trouvaient des idoles et fit une entrée solennelle au chant des hymnes, des cantiques et des psaumes d’action de grâce.	47 So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.
48 Après avoir enlevé de la ville toutes les impuretés, il y plaça des hommes fidèles à la Loi, puis il la fortifia et s’y construisit une maison.	48 Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwellingplace for himself.
49 Pendant ce temps, les hommes qui occupaient la Citadelle de Jérusalem ne pouvaient plus ni sortir, ni circuler dans le pays, ni acheter, ni vendre; ils souffraient de la famine et nombreux étaient ceux qui mouraient de faim.	49 They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.
50 Ils supplièrent Simon de faire la paix avec eux. Il la leur accorda, mais il les chassa de là et purifia la Citadelle de toute impureté.	50 Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions:
51 Il y fit une entrée solennelle le vingt-troisième jour du second mois, en l’an 171, avec palmes et chants de louange, au son des cithares, des cymbales, des harpes, des hymnes et des cantiques, car un grand ennemi d’Israël était abattu.	51 And entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.
52 Il ordonna de célébrer ce jour de joie chaque année.	52 He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.
53 Il fortifia la Montagne du Temple située à côté de la Citadelle et il y résida avec ses hommes.	53 And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazera.
54 Voyant que son fils Jean était maintenant un homme, Simon lui confia le commandement de toutes les troupes et lui donna Gazer comme résidence.
