Primeira Epístola de São João 3

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Considerai com que amor nos amou o Pai, para que sejamos chamados filhos de Deus. E nós o somos de fato. Por isso, o mundo não nos conhece, porque não o conheceu.	1 You must see what great love the Father has lavished on us by letting us be cal ed God's children --which is what we are! The reason why the world does not acknowledge us is that it did not acknowledge him.
2 Caríssimos, desde agora somos filhos de Deus, mas não se manifestou ainda o que havemos de ser. Sabemos que, quando isto se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a Deus, porquanto o veremos como ele é.	2 My dear friends, we are already God's children, but what we shall be in the future has not yet beenrevealed. We are wel aware that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he real yis.
3 E todo aquele que nele tem esta esperança torna-se puro, como ele é puro.	3 Whoever treasures this hope of him purifies himself, to be as pure as he is.
4 Todo aquele que peca transgride a lei, porque o pecado é transgressão da lei.	4 Whoever sins, acts wickedly, because al sin is wickedness.
5 Sabeis que {Jesus} apareceu para tirar os pecados, e que nele não há pecado.	5 Now you are well aware that he has appeared in order to take sins away, and that in him there is no sin.
6 Todo aquele que permanece nele não peca; e todo o que peca não o viu, nem o conheceu.	6 No one who remains in him sins, and whoever sins has neither seen him nor recognised him.
7 Filhinhos, ninguém vos seduza: aquele que pratica a justiça é justo, como também {Jesus} é justo.	7 Children, do not let anyone lead you astray. Whoever acts uprightly is upright, just as he is upright.
8 Aquele que peca é do demônio, porque o demônio peca desde o princípio. Eis por que o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para destruir as obras do demônio.	8 Whoever lives sinfully belongs to the devil, since the devil has been a sinner from the beginning. Thiswas the purpose of the appearing of the Son of God, to undo the work of the devil.
9 Todo o que é nascido de Deus não peca, porque o germe divino reside nele; e não pode pecar, porque nasceu de Deus.	9 No one who is a child of God sins because God's seed remains in him. Nor can he sin, because he is achild of God.
10 É nisto que se conhece quais são os filhos de Deus e quais os do demônio: todo o que não pratica a justiça não é de Deus, como também aquele que não ama o seu irmão.	10 This is what distinguishes the children of God from the children of the devil: whoever does not liveuprightly and does not love his brother is not from God.
11 Pois esta é a mensagem que tendes ouvido desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros.	11 This is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we must love one another,
12 Não façamos como Caim, que era do Maligno e matou seu irmão. E por que o matou? Porque as suas obras eram más, e as do seu irmão, justas.	12 not to be like Cain, who was from the Evil One and murdered his brother. And why did he murder hisbrother? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's upright.
13 Não vos admireis, irmãos, se o mundo vos odeia.	13 Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
14 Nós sabemos que fomos trasladados da morte para a vida, porque amamos nossos irmãos. Quem não ama permanece na morte.	14 We are wel aware that we have passed over from death to life because we love our brothers.Whoever does not love, remains in death.
15 Quem odeia seu irmão é assassino. E sabeis que a vida eterna não permanece em nenhum assassino.	15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you are well aware that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
16 Nisto temos conhecido o amor: {Jesus} deu sua vida por nós. Também nós outros devemos dar a nossa vida pelos nossos irmãos.	16 This is the proof of love, that he laid down his life for us, and we too ought to lay down our lives for ourbrothers.
17 Quem possuir bens deste mundo e vir o seu irmão sofrer necessidade, mas lhe fechar o seu coração, como pode estar nele o amor de Deus?	17 If anyone is wel -off in worldly possessions and sees his brother in need but closes his heart to him,how can the love of God be remaining in him?
18 Meus filhinhos, não amemos com palavras nem com a língua, mas por atos e em verdade.	18 Children, our love must be not just words or mere talk, but something active and genuine.
19 Nisto é que conheceremos se somos da verdade, e tranqüilizaremos a nossa consciência diante de Deus,	19 This will be the proof that we belong to the truth, and it wil convince us in his presence,
20 caso nossa consciência nos censure, pois Deus é maior do que nossa consciência e conhece todas as coisas.	20 even if our own feelings condemn us, that God is greater than our feelings and knows al things.
21 Caríssimos, se a nossa consciência nada nos censura, temos confiança diante de Deus,	21 My dear friends, if our own feelings do not condemn us, we can be fearless before God,
22 e tudo o que lhe pedirmos, receberemos dele porque guardamos os seus mandamentos e fazemos o que é agradável a seus olhos.	22 and whatever we ask we shal receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what isacceptable to him.
23 Eis o seu mandamento: que creiamos no nome do seu Filho Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, como ele nos mandou.	23 His commandment is this, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and that weshould love one another as he commanded us.
24 Quem observa os seus mandamentos permanece em {Deus} e {Deus} nele. É nisto que reconhecemos que ele permanece em nós: pelo Espírito que nos deu.	24 Whoever keeps his commandments remains in God, and God in him. And this is the proof that heremains in us: the Spirit that he has given us.
